I cannot thank you enough for puttng these up! I am a huge fan of Emma and the whole cast -- and MR KNIGHTLEY in particular. I have always loved the Gwyneth Paltrow/Jeremy Northam version, but on the other hand, this is straight up, undeniable brilliance. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Mrs. Elton is a pushy loudmouth, especially vulgar by 18th century standards of etiquette! Even meek Jane tells her to mind her own business when Mrs. Elton says she'll find a governess position for her.
@mannixisle : and the fashions she wears by today's standards would be the equivalent of the meat dress of Lady Gaga's!: feathers and flowers and ringlets! It's cute to look at, but I'm sure abominable in polite company.
I have to say, dinner parties look like trials. Nothing more interesting than the usual food, and you have to invite people you don't like out of social propriety, whereas if you're just having plain dinner, you can invite whomever you so choose. :P
I love this adaptation b/c you actually get to see Knightley's feelings for Emma! In this part, you can actually see him falling for her and his insecurities with Frank. This is so good! Plus, I love the guy who plays Knightley he's such a good actor!!!
I saw her in Jane Eyre. Seeing her a second time makes me really sit up and take notice of her commendable acting. Although one wonders if she is being stereotyped as an actress, she is always playing the stuck up gentlewoman.
Christina Cole (Mrs. Elton) was also in a mini-series called "He Knew He Was Right" and in the Shakespeare episode of "Doctor Who" as the witch with the red hair. She played another bitchy role in a great film called "Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day". Definitely check it out. It's brilliant.
Userone1000: I agreee with your comment about Ms. Paltrow's age and the look of this Emma. What strikes me most of all about this version was the underscoring of Emma's lack of experience in the world outside of Highburry. It helps to show that despite money and privilidge she her mind has not been broadend by travel and esposure.
I like this Emma...she is young looking...like she ought to be. Gwyneth never looked like she was 21y.o. to me. Also she has big wide eyes which i find endearing.
GO JANE! I love how she refused Mrs. Elton's request about the mail and the governess ideas. I'm glad Emma steps in to help Jane. Mrs. Elton in this version is so annoying and too nosy.
i'm loving John in this version. he has a fantastic and sarcastic personality...i think he's the subtle comic relief or something.
and Jane is quite feisty, love her "excuse me" to Mrs. Elton. very cool. (if you watch closely, there are a lot of hints to the secret relationship between Jane and ---- (for those who know). thanks for the upload!
She also plays the annoying potential step-sister of Amanda Bynes in What a Girl Wants. The pool of talented British actors/actresses is kind of limited I guess. haha
Emma, Jane and George are so kind !

The actress playing Mrs. Elston is the same one that played Blanche in the 2006 Masterpiece Theatre's Jane Eyre.

Yep. She's also Caroline Bingley in Lost in Austen, if i'm not mistake! She's done quite a few adaptions of Austen!
