This version is missing the verse after he shoots the "handsome young stranger": "Just for a moment I stood there in silence, shocked by the foul evil deed I had done. Many thoughts ran through my mind as I stood there, I had but one choice and that was to run."
@RobertJeffreyMiller I believe you are correct. I remember listening to this when I was younger and thought it was longer than this song. Very good catch!
Whenever I think of a country singer, Marty Robbins always come into mind. I just think that this is a very perfect song, especially on this original piece. The singer, the accompaniment, the guitar solo, strumming and the harmoniser were simply gorgeous. It is very complete and you just can't do better than that, splendid!

One of the best songs ever - Marty Robbins wrote it, and made such a wonderful recording. Every time this song would come on the radio, I would pull over, stop the car, and just listen to it. Now I have it on my own mp3 - and on youtube, thanks to this great post! Thank you!
Im a gun happy, Copenhagen chewin', nails tough cowboy from AZ and somehow everytime I listen to this I get some of that wierd salty wet stuff come from my eye. Marty Robbins is a great songwriter in Louis La'moore style. Love it!..... I mean... its dang right!
one of the best singers ever....met him once at a small venue, great laugh and wonderful performer. I'll never forget the first time I attended the Grand Ol' Opry and he was the last performer of the night. He did the 'turn the clock back' as he always did. Miss you Marty.....
Thank you. Reminds me of my father blaring Marty Robbins through the house on Saturday afternoons. Rest in peace dad. I hope somewhere you can hear all the Marty Robbins you can possibly listen to.
The first #1 hit for the year 1960 and the first #1 hit of the sixties. What would this new decade bring in the music scene? Only time would tell. This hit by the late Marty Robbins would top the charts for 2 weeks. Marty, thanks for your contributions to the music industry. You are definitely missed.
I'm leaving today to take a friend to El Paso. For the past couple days I've had this song stuck in my head. lol. I had to listen to it again before I leave. Thanks for posting it.
out in the west texas town of el paso i fell in love with a mexican girl nighttime would find me in rosa's cantina ,usic would play and felina would whirl
Rarely are my posts short, I'm so overly loquacious and typacious(Iknow that's not a word) that it's considered a disorder called hypergraphia, but now that I have the long intro written I only have 1 more word; F'in TIMELESS
Marty Robbins...there's only one. I'm sure that the three thumbs downs were done by those that were intoxicated, that meant to click the thumbs up...we all make mistakes
Thanks for posting this. Great to see the old record player. Back in the seventies I played this particular song on my old record player so many times. Very nostalgic. Where have the years gone?
Several of his songs talk about a Lonesome Wind or Whistle. I'd Start with Dusty Winds And maybe Ghost Train. Both of them Talk about it. I think the one your Looking for is Ghost Train though
Such a great childhood memory - and I just love the beautiful harmonies. Such fun to sing. My husband's from El Paso and this song always give him the giggles. We love it!
C&W...no way...it sounds like "musica ranchra" -mexican rancher's music except its sung in english but besides that it's traditional mexican...but it is nice all the same
This sounds like an original recording but it has been cut and has one line missing. After, "A handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor." the song continues, "Just for a moment I stood there in silence, shocked by the foul evil deed I had done." Many radio stations left that line out and even today you very seldom hear the correct version. Why would anyone retouch the Mona Lisa? RIP Marty
Funny, now that I realize it. I liked this song by Keith Urban's cover during the 2009 ACM Artist of the Decade. Don't like Keith, loved George, love this song.
For those wondering why vinyl sounds better, it is actually a superior format in that it captures a greater portion of the sound wave, which offers greatly increased clarity. Every generation, we have swapped recording quality for compactness, from vinyl to cassette to CD to mp3. That's why most bands who can afford it will record their master tracks on vinyl, and then scale down to other media later: it more accurately catalouges their work.
An evening out, Romance, Dancing at Roses, ends tragically for one cowboy and then for another, all for the LOVE, for Falina. A Simple yet such a hunting song. I feel like that Cowboy........
its timeless music because its speaks to all of us that loved someone that simply was never supposed to be ours. Good song reminds me of times in my childhood, when my father and I would listen to a lot of his records. Music is as close to time trave as one can get in my opinion.
Listen to those awesome guitar licks performed by Grady Martin. Classic Tex-Mex sound. Couple that with Marty's wholesome vocals, and the backing harmonies, and you have a classic song that will still sound good 100 years from now.
HHSGDFootballJPD: Yeah, what is it about the vinyl that sounds so good? In many cases it sounds better than CD's. Who said things "get better" with the passing of time? This proves the axiom wrong.
Thank you so very much for this song, brings back a lot of memorys here in the badlands of New Mexico, and believe it or not...its still like that today:)
Marty Robbins was one of a kind. He picked the right songs to match his talents, too. My other favorite from him is Devil Woman, which is also a perfect fit for his rich tone. When I was little, my mom would play Marty's music on our old wooden LP console (much like the one in this video) as she cleaned the house. I think his voice was one of the happiest sounds of my youth. Even now I spend a lot of sunsets on the deck of my home strumming my guitar and singing Marty's songs to myself.
My grandpa's favorite artist--I listened to this when I was 10 years old about 44 years ago lol It brings a smile to my face thinking about how much enjoyment this music brought to him..thanks for posting this!
Thanks MrVinyl for posting this, my old old cassette tape wore out with all his great songs and I cant find them. I played 45's and 33's on the record player and my ears were tuned to harmonies so I was lucky to hear the good stuff at a young age, not like the crap that passes for music now.
My Grandfather used to listen to this song all of the time when I was very young and it's always stuck with me. My father recently bought a Marty Robbins CD and it brings nostalgia every time I hear it. Great song by a great artist.
@pieman97405 You crack me up.....a teenager who owns more records than CD's. The public needs to hear more postive stories about kids like you than all the crap we read about and watch. The news media implys by its very nature (crime reporting) that all kids are delinquents, all whites are racists, all blacks are drug dealers, and all Hispanics are criminals.
The album it originally was recorded for was titled "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs". It was released in the spring of 1959 (That's right, 50 years ago). I guess in those days it took some talent to make a record. The album was remastered to CD in 1999 with 3 bonus tracks.
