  • When I need to go a a place of meaning, love, youth and innocence, I can always go to the music of the 60 to 80s in the main as a lot of it reflects a time when life appeared to be much simpler, a place the today world will never return to

  • beautiful song takes me back to a better place and time gone forever

  • Love this song. Takes me back to before our country was so "tangled in blue".

  • @midlocal That IS a Hammond organ Matthew is playing .... appears to be a C-3 model ... what did you think it was??

  • to Sylvia,

  • That organ melody got so much Bach in it. It's wonderful. :)

  • A fantastic song, from a fantastic year!

  • how can anyone dislike this song...... -_-

  • "Прикольный" HARUM!!!!

  • Oh what memories .....

  • Try the article in Wikipedia for the detail, but it was influenced by a JS Bach piece. the credits read Gary Brooker, Keith Reid and now Matthew Fisher.

  • does anyone know who wrote this?

  • I slow danced with my German girlfriend in a gast hause in Neustadt Germany in 1967, in 1968 I was sent to Vietnam and never saw her again until 2008 when I found her through the internet, we are both married and have children and I met her again in Germany last year along with several other German friends from my nearly 3 years there. This song over the years always reminded me of Silviana and what might have been.

  • @Librajazzman Know what you mean! You must keep those bittersweet memories close to your secret heart.

  • @Librajazzman i know this feeling, man.....

  • @Librajazzman

Wow! Dude, that nearly made me cry! :)

  • @Librajazzman I need to go and wipe that grit out of my eyes and clear the lump in my throat. That's the saddest thing I've ever read on youtube xx

  • @Librajazzman That is so romantic.

  • Robin Trower is the only member of this band to go on and be a success .

  • Aquella Blanca Palidez...Arte Musical por donde se le escuche..Un regalo para las nuevas generaciones de hermosa musica..

  • would take my little transitor radio to bed and listen with covers over my head...hehe

good ole days, god, i missed them, thanks for posting

  • This ain't PUNK derr

  • Shit quality but what a tune.. Do you all smell of piss yet..

  • One of the finest songs in rock history; a standard. The group, however, did not do too much else, to my knowledge. A One Hit Wonder iyw?

  • . . this is truly a wonderful video . thank you so much :))

  • Got the First "best" I ever had!" This" on the radio. snow falling in a Christian Science Church parking-lot...in the back seat of my 1976 Chevy Malibu!

  • A true classic.

  • lindo, lindo, lindo!

  • The day I retired after 40 years on the job, this was the song playing on my car's radio as I left the parking lot for the last time...a great song and a great memory

  • @jagerschweigen Wow, how nice. Congratulations on your achievement over the years and good luck to you in your retirement. I live in Brazil, I'm 52 years old and still have some years left before I retire. I teach music, I am a singer and keyboard player and this song has always been in my repertoire because I find beautiful. Big hug for you.

  • @luxlunna Thanks for the hug..right back at you! The fact that a 40 year old song can still bring people together is a testament to the power of music,of which you seem passionate about.Best wishes to you as well

  • @jagerschweigen Wow, I can so relate to that feeling. It wasn't this song that I heard as I pulled out of the parking lot for the last time (Aerosmith's Fly Away), but I feel the same absolute joy, relief, and melancholy I felt that day every time I hear it. That is a day all you younger people will hopefully get a chance to experience. It will be a big marker in your life.

  • its the 1st time i saw a drummer in front of stage and the guitarists and vocalist were behind him

  • cool :)

  • Robin Trower! He unleashed his guitar after being in this band. Great atmospheric, bluesy stuff. Brings back that whole amazing era.

  • 6 morons have their hearing impaired............

  • Cuanta nostalgia, ... y parece que el tiempo no existiera... gran canción de este gran grupo.

  • I'm 17 years old. I'm so jealous about music do we get nowadays than what our parents got in past. Our granny got The Beatles, Procol Harum, The Shadows, Cliff Richard, and many others. Our parents got Queen, The Police, Michael Jackson, A-Ha, Guns and Roses, and many others. What do we get nowadays?? Justin Bieber? Please give us something good! Not that kind of sucks music

  • This song puts my mind back in the early medieval England days; of knights fighting over the right to marry a beautiful princess.

  • Good old tune...No sorry...awesome!!! some real good music was made back there...i wish they would keep on doing has good as this in these days!!!

  • VIEJOS TIEMPOS,LINDOS DIAS.

  • this is playback, right? Everything on tv in those days was playback ....at least I guess, cos everything in the 80s was playback

  • @daypeshmodd The music is playback, but Gary is singing.

  • @daypeshmodd Thanks!

  • walking home from Mothers in Erdington England anyone remember?

  • @Gabriels303 Maybe not Mothers in Erdington, but pretty damn close....

  • you should have gave him a tip,!!!!!! listen to more 60s music

  • epic SONG LADIES AND GENTLEMAN!!!!

  • AAAWWW, I'm 69...love 60's and 70's music..that is the time my kids were teens..but I do understand how you feel....ELVIS,little Richard,ROCK AND ROLL,the diamonds,etc... do you know who I am talking about? it's generational..you guys picked on us..now the "new" generation is picking on you..do you feel bad about dissing your parents music now?????????/

  • @taffeydog24 Do I feel bad about dissing my parents music... no, we were young...

  • Comment removed

  • @taffeydog24 Nope!! They liked Rap!

  • @taffeydog24

I'm 52 years and also love the songs from the 60 and 70. I was a girl this time, but my older brothers heard many good songs and I learned from them. Today I am a singer and keyboardist, and many good songs this time are in my repertoire ... Musical Hugs to you!

  • @taffeydog24 I'm 27 and I've put up with years of ridicule as Del Shannon, The Platters, Four Seasons etc... have been my favourite musicians to listen to since I was 4 years old.

  • @LilMissLunatic dude, i was a teenager in the 70s and my favorite was JOHN DENVER!...true, i loved the beatles, stones. moody blues, springsteen, the 4 tops but i was never allowed to forget that denver thing...hang in there, thats all i gotta say

  • @akitaman101 I'm a parent now with 2 little'uns aged 1 and 3 and they're both heavily into 70's punk and E.L.O and Supertramp :)

  • the best.

  • Great song!

  • My goodness I remember this back in 1967 when I was back in junior high school 7Th grade. This sure brings back the great memories of the great rock bands that filled the airwaves in the 60's. I consider myself fortunate to have grown-up in an era of enlightenment. That have changed the course of the world, and reminded all of us to take an active part in all social issues, instead of being a bystander and never taking part.

  • Amazing :^)

  • This song is pure 60's music. The Best.

  • One of the greatest songs ever. Brings back a lot of good memories growing up in the 60's in the bay area. Who really cares about rankings, they are someone's opinion and the only opinion that matters to me is mine.

  • love this one. go listen to Bach's air on G.

  • One of the best songs of all times!

  • Just one thing to be said and never forgotten :

THIS, my friends, ranked #57 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004..

    And it sure was deserved...

  • @Xtof68 should have been higher than that - did smells like teen spirit at #9 or #10 do that much more for music than this song did?

  • @DMac1712

it was NOT my choice to rank it that LOW. There are several things I don't agree upon,, with that list. But, since I wasn't asked for my opinon, I take it for what it is. Still, it shows that I'm not the only person to consider this to be a major piece of music, (although highly inspired by baroque compositions, which is not a flaw, in its structure.)

  • This is real music; filled with passion and fueled by true talent.

  • 1 of the greatest songs ever. never can get enuff of music like this.

  • People, condescending/disgusting rap culture we have today are just mental retards that glorifies stupidity, sexual perversion, violence, racism and gang crimes. No wonder why most minorities youths have criminal records and STD's due to sexual perversion acts glorified by rap lyrics.

  • whitershade of pale, lightershade of brown. Doesn't matter it's substance that counts.

    Inconsequential! xoxoxox

  • meilleurs slow, meilleures années merci Procul Harum

  • not only that...synthesized music...or autotune.

The days that talent was discovered in bars and coffee houses is done....

I love youtube...can search for all the old performances that were and are pure magic.... must admit though I like Annie Lenox singing this great song

  • Once, I played this song in a juke box in Glen Burnie Md. The waiter (a kid) came to the table to see if there was anything else we wanted. This song was playing. He told me he was so sorry for the bad music & he would turn it off if I wanted. I told him I picked this music. He slithered away. He didn't get a tip!!!!!!!

  • @stagergurl pretty funny story and an ignorant waiter

  • @stagergurl I bet his face turned a whiter shade of pale. XD

  • @stagergurl

it is sad to see how young ones don t have good music this days

maybe that waiter will play the song again some day

it may help him heal his hart and soul just as it heals mine when

    i play it

  • @3racompuerta Sad how people feel the need to stereotype between "Old People" and "Young Ones", and judge what their intelligence and musical tastes must be based on those stereotypes. I'm in my twenties, and yet, Smokey Robinson, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, etc., are played in my house every day, so are Nine Inch Nails, Fallout Boy, and Eminem. My love of music ranges far and wide, and my youth has nothing to do with my ability to appreciate it.

  • @kittenofhades i am a chilean man, this song is the most beautiful of my generation...for dancin with your love, chick to chick,in 30 cm, of flexi...

  • @kittenofhades enimineum Sucks

  • @kittenofhades i understand what you mean i don t mean to judge people o try to stereotype them i am in my mid 30s and i love older music like old jazz Billie Hollyday

or soul like the Supremes or rock as billy idol or the cure

also like actual music like Eminem

i also have a wide and far taste in music, i just say is sad how younger kids now have to eat all the comercial shit and get feed whit it every day, is a harder journey for them

    now .

  • @kittenofhades Well said! I'm 62 and some think people of my era have a monopoly on the "right" music. I even get this from fellow musicians who should know better.

  • @kittenofhades Pity about the NIN, Fallout Boy and Eninem though.

  • @stagergurl Way to go, lol...... this is a great song.

  • packs a ton of memories. some good, some not so good. it was a confusing time, but this melody, there's something about it ... hauntingly tender, comforting somehow. Great old song.

  • YOUR VOICE MAIL IS FULL !! XOXO Dods

  • Robin Trower on guitar.....I used to live in the same road as he did in Southend. Used to see the young man walk past my house. His Mama worked in the gasboard in Southend . Ah..memories xx

  • I've always thought the lyrics could have been better, but this is a masterpiece of 'blue-eyed R&B with a Hammond organ'. It's like it could have been a Percy Sledge song. There's very few songs in a niche like this- Don't Dream it's over, and maybe 'I'm Only Human' come to mind. But this is the best.

  • Love it

  • 2 people are so stupid

  • you were such a cute young lad gary.Happy 67th birthday maestro. Thanks!

    a fan since 1967.

  • A true classic

  • My father was in Vietnam when this song came out. his platoon used to listen to this to make them "closer to reality" thank God he came home in one piece from the war. This song brings much emotion to myself and dad.

  • @goldmandan1

as was I my friend.....Great Tune....I loved it back then and enjoy it even more today. Tell your Dad, Thanks.

    olehippy13

    former vietnam medic

  • @olehippy13

Yes, Same to you my friend. Dad has lots of memories from the "'Nam" unfortunately none are any good ones except the music. He had shrapnel pulled out of his gut and was shipped home to the "world" 9 months in land.

    D

  • GREAT MUSIC. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

  • a whiter shade of pale pas une ride un slow merveilleux

  • splendite merveilleux

  • HOW COULD 2 LONELY PEOPLE NOT "LIKE" THIS.... OH THAT'S RIGHT

THERE R HORRIBLE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE !!!!!!!

  • I'm 57 and I know what you mean. millot1234. I grew up in the metro Detroit area and saw most of the bands back then at the Eastown, Grande, Olympia, The Hide Out, and other places. T-Rex played at out high school prom, and Bob Seger played at our school as well, Harper Woods High. I also saw the Amboy Dukes at Notre Dame High School by my house. They used to have dances every Saturday night there. I was in that mix in the late 60's and I'll never forget it.

  • Beautiful sound lovely melody, but has anyone been able to put this jigsaw together?,the lyrics I mean

  • Just turned 59, and every time i hear this song, brings back great memories of a world less far less connected, before the internet.......i sometimes wonder if my crazy ex-girlfriend knew what she was talking about, when she stated that the anti-christ, is actually the internet......and not a person.

  • merciiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  • This song just has that haunting sound that always moves me, hears to many more years of listening to it.

  • I would really like to have one starts from 0.05 please ~.~

  • Comment removed

  • This song is about a man and a woman having drunken sex..Still one of the best songs ever writen..

  • and on organ.....the Grim Reaper ! Matthew Fisher joined after Whiter Shade and hence the lawsuit, about which i don't know but there it is.....

  • those were the days where you could listen to tracks like this endlessly on the radio, not like today, all you get is aggression and hate lyrics from stupid drug fuelled rappers, most of time are criminals and gangsters. wonder if any rap tune will have the same effect as this song has 42 years down the line!

  • @claud4996 No way man. Rap has no soul....Not to mention education.

  • @claud4996 No way man. Rap has no soul....Not to mention education. I really love the organ in this song. Man I'd love to play like that.

  • So beautiful...

  • Timeless! a kes me back to the Commodore Hotel Ballroom in Lowell Mass. 1967

  • Performed by "The-less" Procol Harum. Just a beautiful song. I think the song concerns an LSD trip and being shipped off to the Vietnam war? Song was probably inspired by Percy Sledge's When a Man loves A Woman. And definitely grabbed from Bach's "Air on a G String"

  • music was at its best back then...i cant even listen to the radio because all there is is dance and rap like...its a shame

  • One of the greatest songs of all time.
