Agree, haitians were able to keep more of the taino culture than the rest of the island. I cannot remember the book but the author stated that the natives that survived retreated to the mountains. Later on the african slaves that escaped retreated to the mountains as well and both culture mixed.

Despite Trujillos genocide, most Dominicans today have Haitian / African ancestry along with European ancestry. To lighten the population, he welcomed Europeans fleeing Francos Spain, Hitlers Germany, and Mussolinis Italy.
This was done because the Haitian constitution continued to define Haiti as the entire island. By the time of the American occupation of Haiti (1915-1934), the US more firmly recognized Dominican independence and rejected Haitis claim to the entire island. In 1929, the US helped to set the current border between the two countries. Haitian territory was redefined in a new constitution written under US occupation.
The disarray allowed separatist forces to take hold of the eastern part of the island and to nominally declare independence in 1844 as the Dominican Republic. Haiti refused to recognize this loss of its eastern territory. At the time, the US did not take sides on this issue. Haitian, should i say the French were very rich before haiti became indepedent. after the independent "no body wanted to work the sugarcane fields it was taboo" that were all the black slave work, as a result it started to become poor over time. DR economy was base on cattle ranching, Boyer new this, when he took over he change the economy model of the island and distrisbute land to make it more like the french, this became an issue with dominican land owners.

Why would you, after gaining your independence, decide to do the same SLAVE work you fought against? Secondly, the only way Haiti became a recognized free state was by accepting a $21 billion debt from France. Now that's a fast and easy way to become poor!

I never heard any complains of being slaves for the Spaniards or the French from 1503 to 1822. Was that a great and lovely part of your history. All I ear is I am of Spaniard decent, a lot of you would love to return to the slavery days. Unfortunatelly slavery has been abolished since the Haitian occupation on your side of the island.

@sodlo Spanish settler, mulatto and black in DR all became cattle rancher, in Haiti you have a plantation slavery. very different from the black slave who ride a horse and it master ride the horse as well, slavery in Haiti was much different where the master was still in the horse and the slave was still working the land. this is why DR is so mix, white master took black wife, white woman took black husband, this did not happened in Haiti. this is why we say we are of Spanish decent.

Blacks and Mulatoos (who made up the majority) were needed to be part of the military and the Church. Haitians during their occupation made it official. Agree, haitians were able to keep more of the taino culture than the rest of the island. I cannot remember the book but the author stated that the natives that survived retreated to the mountains. Later on the african slaves that escaped retreated to the mountains as well and both culture mixed.

But black Haitians/slaves didn't really assimilate the natives, meaning they didn't have as much admixture as the Spaniards and black Dominicans did with the natives. It has being proven that 60,000 Tainos survived in today's DR, and about 20% of Dominicans today carry that Native gene. I know because I'm studying anthropology and history.

black people were classified as Haitian and were murdered by Trujillo. Towns were renamed to accentuate Spanish heritage. Homes were demolished if their architecture appeared African and were replaced with new homes based on Spanish/Mediterranean architecture. Churches and missionary groups were sent to rural communities to destroy traditional African manner of worship. Any recognized aspect of African culture shared by Dominicans and Haitians came under attack.

In 1930,Trujillo, came to power in the DR & sought to more definitively separate the two sides of the island. He did ethnic cleansing to create his ideal of Dominican identity. He made historians distort Dominican history to erase African heritage. In his racially fairytale, he described Dominicans as descendants of Europeans and of the decimated Tainos. To lighten the population, he welcomed Europeans fleeing Francos Spain, Hitlers Germany, and Mussolinis Italy.

By the time of the American occupation of Haiti (1915-1934), the US more firmly recognized Dominican independence and rejected Haitis claim to the entire island. In 1795, in the Treaty of Basil, Spain ceded the remaining two thirds of the island to France making the entire island a French colony. Many Spanish settlers resettled in other colonies.
• In 1801, Toussaint LOuverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolutionary forces governed the entire island.
• In 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared the islands independence from France. The new nations constitution proclaimed the entire island as the nation of Haiti.

In 1697, in the Treaty of Ryswick, Spain surrendered the western one third of the island to France. Over the next century, France turned its part of the island into a killing field, importing large numbers of African people whom they worked to death to create the worlds most prosperous colony.

@hispanicuscorpus You do show the statue of Gregorio Luperon, but no mention of him. He is considered the guy behind the restoration of DR, and also he was also an advocate of the "Antillean Confederation", the re-unification of Cuba,DR, and PR. Luperon with other Puerto Ricans of notes, Bentances, Belvis, Hostos, and Cubas Jose Marti, and also from DR, Maximo Gomez.

By the early sixteenth century, the gold deposits of Hispaniola were becoming exhausted. Most of the Spanish left for Mexico as word of that area's riches spread. Only a few thousand Spanish remained, most of whom were of mixed blood with the Taino. They began to raise livestock (Columbus had introduced pigs and cattle to the island), which they used to supply passing ships on their way to the mainland.

Those baseball players are from San Pedro de Macoris a province known for receiving in the past black slaves from the British Caribbean colonies, so this players have they origins in these people. It is true, in DR there are a lot of black people due to wave after wave of mass immigration of Haitians throughout our history, so with the time many of their descendents were absorbed by DR, and we have to add the actual descendent of the African slaves brought by the Spanish to Santo Domingo.

Yep also DON'T forget about the USA Black slaves who came to Samana City and Samana Province in the 1820s! They are known as AMERICANOS and their descendants still live there today!
