A "progressive" income tax is where you pay a higher percentage of your income in taxes as you make more money. For those that do not know, a progressive income tax is one of the ten planks of communism.
The top 1% pays 37% of the total taxes and the bottom 50% pays 3% of taxes.

@truthforamerica That statistic is thrown around a lot. What nobody says is that the top 1% also earns about 40% of the wealth. That being said, doesn't it make sense that they pay about 40% of the taxes. And the flip side of this is that the bottom 50% make about 1.5% of the wealth, so think about that when someone whines they aren't paying their fair share.

I think its time for the US tax code and the IRS to cease to exist. look up the "fair tax", its percentage based on only what you buy...meaning you income is not taxed...if you save your money your not taxed...you only taxed when you purchase things.

You still have to pay property tax jusy to keep your property, It's like you're paying rent to the city/county/state government to use your land. I think that it is a better alternative than the obscene lines I see out of emergency rooms and the fact that so many people think they are covered only to have it not cover a serious illness. An industry that makes profits by denying help to sick people is worse than the government (in my opinion). There is a point to which the wealthy should not be taxed, but we are not there and I'm not as concerned about spoiled grandchildren as dead people (20,000+/yr) from UHC and Cigna.

I know. The estate tax doesn't touch estates of $500k or even $1m. Two years ago I received just under the former number from my Grandfather. No estate taxes were owed. GM is failing because of the oil companies got greedy and nobody is buying cars. The banks are failing because they have bad loans that are not being paid off. That's not the case. Big businesses always start small. The head of that business worked his ass off to make it big. There's a hierarchy in all business models. The owner, senior executive, junior executive, skilled laborers, unskilled laborers. The unskilled laborers are protected by a federally mandated minimum wage. Each level paid by tenure/skill/responsibilities. Also, people have the freedom to chose where they work. This isn't serfdom. You can gain skills and earn a promotion.

Unskilled Laborers never quite tend to get anywhere on the perverbial ladder of Capitalism. You have the freedom to spontaneously become CEO of McDonalds after being a fast food worker, it just isn't realistic to do so.
If regulations are enforced, then there is nothing wrong with the current system. If people are happy working at the bottom, then they'll change nothing and stay at the bottom. If they're pissed, they either do something that get's them ahead, change jobs, or stay right where they are and hate life.

1% of taxpayers pay 37% of income tax collected not because they're taxed higher, but because their income is vastly higher. if we had a truly flat 10% tax, the top 1% would STILL be paying a large percentage of total income tax.

'wealth redistribution via taxing' is already socialism. if u've been living under it already, then it shouldn't scare you. the wealthy used to be taxed almost 90 % in previous decades in the u.s.
i think what socialists want is to ensure that, for instance, the small farmers who produce coffee or other goods, should earn a LIVING WAGE. socialists are against exploitation of the worker, they believe that greed can be cruel and unscrupulous and that people matter more than profit.

@truthforamerica That statistic is thrown around a lot. What nobody says is that the top 1% also earns about 40% of the wealth. That being said, doesn't it make sense that they pay about 40% of the taxes. And the flip side of this is that the bottom 50% make about 1.5% of the wealth, so think about that when someone whines they aren't paying their fair share.

I think its time for the US tax code and the IRS to cease to exist. look up the "fair tax", its percentage based on only what you buy...meaning you income is not taxed...if you save your money your not taxed...you only taxed when you purchase things.

You still have to pay property tax jusy to keep your property, It's like you're paying rent to the city/county/state government to use your land. In 2004, 440 estates that derived most of their income from farming were subject to the estate tax (estates of under $3.5 mil are exempt and for farms it is $4.32 mil). If more people than that are selling their farms for taxes, then they need a better accountant. I have a feeling most large family farms are sold because the heirs want their portion under their own control and not tied up with relatives.

I think that it is a better alternative than the obscene lines I see out of emergency rooms and the fact that so many people think they are covered only to have it not cover a serious illness. An industry that makes profits by denying help to sick people is worse than the government (in my opinion). There is a point to which the wealthy should not be taxed, but we are not there and I'm not as concerned about spoiled grandchildren as dead people (20,000+/yr) from UHC and Cigna.

I know. The estate tax doesn't touch estates of $500k or even $1m. Two years ago I received just under the former number from my Grandfather. No estate taxes were owed. If he left me $3m or $4m I would understand. I didn't earn any of that money, its like a genetic lottery, no skill or hard work required save maybe staying in the old man's good graces. I work for a corporation. I am not a Marxist, but there are base levels of decency that many people agree on.

He's an idiot. 10% of the salary from a person making $20K is $2K, which means a hell of a lot more to him or her than 10% of the salary from a person making $2M. This person would still have $1.8M. I'm pretty sure that dent does little to affect the livelihood of this person; but $2K can mean the difference between paying for rent or a car, and having to live without one and all the problems that go with that.

The fair tax is not fair because of marginal utility. Ten percent of a million dollars does not mean as much to the millionaire as ten percent does to the guy who makes thirty thousand dollars a year.

i highly doubt the economy will be fixed with out interference. i don't agree with the bailouts but gm and aig is failing because of their business practices and the practices other companies are doing as well. GM is failing because of the oil companies got greedy and nobody is buying cars. The banks are failing because they have bad loans that are not being paid off. By the time GM is working on a way to make a profit again they could go under by then. to me it seems we are fucked.

That's not the case. Big businesses always start small. The head of that business worked his ass off to make it big. There's a hierarchy in all business models. The owner, senior executive, junior executive, skilled laborers, unskilled laborers. The unskilled laborers are protected by a federally mandated minimum wage. Each level paid by tenure/skill/responsibilities. Also, people have the freedom to chose where they work. This isn't serfdom. You can gain skills and earn a promotion.

one misconception is that the very wealthy pay an insane percentage of tax. they don't. they do, in fact, pay the same base percentage as most of middle class america, with the notable caveat that deductions make a difference.
1% of taxpayers pay 37% of income tax collected not because they're taxed higher, but because their income is vastly higher. if we had a truly flat 10% tax, the top 1% would STILL be paying a large percentage of total income tax.

Fair enough, I will admit that I overused profanity in my original statement I just get a little emotional about economic issues such as this it was a mistake on my part I apologize.

this man angers me so much that i cannot even articuate a cognitive thought as to how much he is angering me so much that i cannot articulate a cognitive thought as to how much he is angering me so much that i cannot articulate... wait.... now i sound like this asshole, repeating myself without any cognitive reasoning, but basing myself purely on radical oppinion. with no disregaurd for any other oppionin than my own, which must be wrong.
