I made this video to protest hate itself and also to promote love. It must be remembered that the Civil Rights Movement was people of MANY varied hues, faiths, ages, and cultures coming together for the better good. They knew that the human race is the only race. ALL of those faces are honored here and because of them there are far more of us together now than ever.
@Spelvin666 - you're an idiot. Mrs Meimyself's comment makes a point, so what if you've seen it before? And there's plenty of people around who still use the word 'colored'. I'm white, and I have been blue with cold, and green when sick and I've seen other people turn blue and green when cold or sick.
I live in Europe in a land so called "Romania". I'm a mix (hungarian fatherside-german-motherside / also not even 1% romanian ). I live on a small street (100 houses) in TIMISOARA. We have romanian, turkish, hungarian, serbish, german, hungarian, gypsies on the same street. We are a family, with joy, with sorrow...fe fuck on the authorities...we are a comunity...This was in the sixties...when the roots are not rotten...
I was watching a documentary on Martin Luther King, black students were banned from schools and universities etc. and the president of USA was talking on leadership of USA of the free world. It's a pity that the measure of freedom and liberty is limited by the vision of dominating power of the world. Today, ironically USA still claims to be the championship of these values, while police sweeps the anti wall street groups in two cities. Music is sometimes the only shelter to hide away from pain.
Does anyone know what instruments were used in this song? I am wanting to animate it so need to know so i can draw men playing them. I think a piano is used. A violin and guitar? Please help! Thanx!
@anikaytion My ears hear piano, celeste, multiple violins, drums, guitar, and other various percussion instruments, but I'm not as good at identifying those. Maybe woodblocks?
Diiiiooos!! llevo desde el año 2004 que salio esta cancion en el anuncio de la colonia jadore intentando buscar esta cancion por fin para aquel entonces del anuncio tenia 9 años y actualmente 16 jaja como pasa el tiempo
The song is about a couple having a fight. The music and song was written for Nina by.Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell and Sol Marcus.. I guess the words are so true that they can be used for fighting racial discrimination.
Brilliant! I love this song, but the slide show you made to go with it took me to another place. America can only be land of the free, as long as it's home of the brave. Thank you. *PEACE*
I hate racism, intollerance and oppression, but ultimate extremes like good and evil are 2 sides of the the same thing so if you feed one, you feed the other. The eternal fire burns brightest and most beautiful in the darkest hours. That's when heroes step up and the most beautiful art and music is made. Without all the misery in a 'perfect' world we wouldn't have performances as heartwrenching and soultearing as this.
gewoon kappen met racisme en denk ook eens aan mensen in de wereld die het slechter hebben dan westerlingen, vanwege de droogte of zinloze oorlogen of zinloos geweld. god heeft dat niet bedoeld met zijn schepping
What I remeber of this beautiful singer was her struggle with racism. She left us for France and a better life.
I think she saw racism not only in the South, but also in the North. She was reject by a music school in the east because of race. She wated to be a concert pianist.
I thought it was sad when she never returned to the US to live, sadder still she never saw Barak Obama get elected.
I am not trying to persuade, but I do not believe in God. I believe in you. I believe in me. I believe in what we can or cannot accomplish together. I believe that there are problems we face that we create ourselves. I believe that the only way we can overcome these problems is to come TOGETHER.
This is a cliche' and may seem USA centric but it's not: 'United we stand or divided we WILL fall...'
please remove the part where it says lil wayne, before nina not only turns over in her grave, but her people sue for defimation of character. Thank you,
funknroll, who better than you to make such a unspeakably wonderful video about such an unspeakably wicked subject matter...All I have is words. I don't have the right ones; it's all been said before.People KNOWING of things and keeping quiet being the really bad ones, 'There's Something Wrong With Human Nature' and other trip-off-the tongue with slogans...but I'm just a soul whose intentions are good, and the only words I have are 'Thank you' and 'Peace'. X.
I had a lecture which opened my eyes, in history of all subjects. I learnt that, although this video shows people being discriminated, as my lecturer saidthat's part of nature. I thought, 'sack that', we are all even. Every person on this planet loves one another. Can race divide us? No. Because we'd rather love each other than anyone else. Choose. A human or anything else? Anything else, because its not human. Surely that proves we are one! WE ARE ALL EQUAL! peace x
As someone British, who were ignorant (?) of it,with our Superiority Complex; don't blame America. This song is so true it's ineffable.Comment? You need to write a dissertation..I had a couple of brilliant books, both stolen (by people I'm sure whose intentions were good..to educate MORE PEOPLE) about Civil Rights. One part showed a photo of 'the silly' a bathroom...'white':sink,towel etc, 'coloured' a plate and bit of soap; to the 'unspeakable':burnt body on a fiery cross. We are all responsible.
this video was so well put together...many of the faces of the young people make me wonder ..where are they today...??? very powerful video.. the courage so many had..the song could not fit so perfectly.. especially nina simone's version. Her style, sound and soul were the ingredients in a stew.. the more it cooks the better it gets.. very rich sound.. heaven gained a beautiful angel when they got her...
let it be observed with great attention that Nina says soul; not girl, not boy, not black, not white, not gay, not straight, not Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, or Christian. She says soul-something we all have.
Cheers to your shout-out to Eyes on the Prize; it's a remarkable documentary that I've seen numerous times, and that I expect to see numerous more times before I leave this earth.
I see a lot of "let's hope obama does this and that" but this isn't about Obama. This is about everyone and in order to uphold the purpose of the Civil Rights movement we have to act on our own accord.

funknroll, Im wishing and hoping 'Barack' can deliver the 'Dream' to all the people of America and make a better life for all that believe in equality.
It stings my chest to see the Fear in the eyes of those oppressed holding torches for to burn away the darkness in their hearts The times have followed loves call and as we all seek for truth and righteousness We cannot fail For these who find their pleasure in the ownership And bulLies posturing Trying to share their childhood traumas Trying to explain away the hatred they received from their peers A song softens hard hearts with sincerity and grace Its not too late to listen namaste'

so from reading some comments I guess I must be really disconnected with today's (mostly decadent) music scene, did lil wayne really DARE to cover this? he putting his hands on something as beautiful as this should be illegal
I really feel sorry for the people that suffered because of their skin color in the past :( , the times have changed , but there is still racism and discrimination especially against LGBT people nowadays . I guess no matter what will happen people will always have something to hate .
We raised our childern to be colored blind and tolerant of different people who are not like them. As long as people do not break the laws, school rules and respect each other then my childern will highly respect that and hopefully one day the same. BTW we are a Same Sex couple (mom's) raising boys :).
If I were a social studies teacher, this would something I'd show, and I think, would even have impact on the kids of this generation. Very well done. Very powerful and dramatic but most importantly, you get your point across with both the imagery and the way you've seeped them in blue tone AND Nina Simon's haunting voice and meaningful lyrics.
I made this video to protest hate itself and also to promote love. It must be remembered that the Civil Rights Movement was people of MANY varied hues, faiths, ages, and cultures coming together for the better good. They knew that the human race is the only race. @funknroll you made great video, it's very moving,
and this is fantastic song,
talking bout equality of human beings is very important, because although people speak a lot about tolerance usually they forget about it when they act.
@funknroll ...THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO ,WE ARE AN OPPRESSED PEOPLE , STILL WE RISE, THANKS TO THE BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS OF THE PEOPLE LIKE IN THIS VIDEO AND NINA SIMONE THE GATEWAY TO SING OUT HER FEELINGS OF OPPRESSIONS LISTEN TO HER SONG BACK LASH ANOTHER SONG OF HER DOOR TO EXPRESS HER OPPRESSED FEELINGS OF THAT TIME ERA, STILL THE VERY SAME TODAY, NOTHINGS REALLY CHANGED
history is icecold an hate is still around us.. but all that happened durin slavery really hurts me deep an it scares me that people can b that cold.. people that do wrong we cant change.. but b different urself n dont feed tha hate its ugly an many have died an been treated so wrong in tha name of hate..
when ppl like lil wayne sample songs like this i think its cool because then you can go back and look up the originals if they were before your time and get a better appreciation for them two thumbs up for good music
Things are still not right in this country ... we have exchanged racial inequality for social and economic inequality. But where are the people who are able to see the truth and willing to suffer for it?
together she made it-all love.

@funknroll you made great video, it's very moving,
and this is fantastic song,
talking bout equality of human beings is very important, because although people speak a lot about tolerance usually they forget about it when they act.

they used to be racist out of ignorance,
If there is a war,
we dont look at each others skin color or how you were raised or who your ancestors were,
We fight side by side like family,
Because we are,
We all came from the same 2 human beings,
There is no such thing as a "white" race, a "black" race, our "hispanic" or "asian"
there is only ONE true race,
and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the HUMAN RACE

Trailer for Luther - made me realise how good this version is. I like Joe Cocker's (Layer Cake) version but this is the definitive version....

I didn't grow up with that, I'm too young. That is very hard hitting. I can't imagine living with such divide.

Things are still not right in this country ... we have exchanged racial inequality for social and economic inequality. But where are the people who are able to see the truth and willing to suffer for it?
