  • Hey guys, our headlining tour started today in Houston! We're playing an 80 minute set each night! Check out the rest of the dates through our website linked in the "video" information up top. Hope to see a lot of you at the shows! -Chris

  • Jesus christ you look young here

  • Hi guys,

I just got this album for my birthday a few weeks ago and I love it! It's such a nice mixture of beautiful melodies and more heavy riffing, perfect balance of highly technical and slower parts. You're the first prog metal band I REALLY like, usually prog metal gives me a headache after 15 minutes, but while listening to your music, I wish the album was twice as long!

Thank you for enrichening my musical taste!

  • I totally disagree with you being #3 best metal guitarist under 30, at least #2 but my original question was do you consider yourselves metal guitarist or progressive?

  • @medic2009guy I dont really consider myself a "metal" guitarist.... just "a" guitarist. I play all styles, but I guess Im best known for Scale The Summit, which is a progressive band, but we tour so much inside the metal genre that we are considered metal. I just appreciate being on the lists, you know? Dont really care if the genre may not be 100% correct. -Chris

  • @scalethesummit Awesome man thanks for answering, I totally get what your saying, but your playing is great and inspiring keep it up man!

  • @scalethesummit I didn't mean to put, but and now that i re-read it I am not trying to be arrogant or not interested which is kind of the vibe I got after re-reading that, strange how 1 word can make you look like an ass ha.

  • Just found out about this band today, love happy instrumentals such as this. You guys should definitely check out the band CHON too if you haven't heard of em.

  • I'm sorry, high G on the 8, or did I misunderstand?

  • @MrTheMacroprosopus Nevermind, yes. Intriguing usage of an 8. Always thought it was a LOW G.

  • What is this song?

  • @AdvancedBBear the great plains

  • 5:07 "There you have it." looks so fucking easy xD you guys are dope. everytime i hear one of your song, i want to hear the whole album right now. you are genius! can't wait to see you in Montreal!

  • I have touched that JP7 before!

  • Amazing Stuff, Im getting the bass tab book next week, cant wait!

You guys should come to North Carolina, i know alot of people that wants to see you guys!

  • Such a talented band.

  • Scale the Summit... they always break G strings fingering a minor.

  • perfect example of music nerds here. cool band though.

  • Absolutely amazing! You guys are easily two of the greatest musicians of this generation. The music you guys make has been the biggest inspiration to pursuing my own. Thank you!

  • guitar world needs to lay off the vocal gate, mang.

  • @D00drebeau This.

  • Ah, that was awesome. Definitely going to work towards playing this as my next goal... but I'll have to get rid of my .12s >.> Inspiring playing =)

  • Now one of my favorite guitarist, because you have an 8-string guitar, and instead of opting to get the low G, you grabbed a high G. Kind of shows you looked at it from a music aspect instead of as a gimmick.

  • @bassistfromhell94 How you play an instrument shows how you look at it... not which direction you decide to extend the range.

  • Tell it to a black person...

  • @Siah2000 thats because there is an official tab book. scalethesummitstore (DOT) com

  • @scalethesummit I was so close to buying it... but then I saw your technique book instead and ended up getting that instead. LOL ..Hardest decision of my life. Looking forward to getting it. :)

  • @scalethesummit I like the wholetab book concept, but could you guys also putit to like,oh idontknow, some sort of format to where i can play to it, and controll tempo and such, like guitar pro? but somehow stillpay forit? Cause imean paper tabs, just are no fun.

  • Chris, why do you have a lisp here? I don't hear it in any of your other videos haha.

  • @davethehostage its something with the mic youtube.com/watch?v=JE8klO5A6ck

  • @scalethesummit Aaaah, okay. This was the first instructional-type video I ever saw from you guys, and for the first year I was under tha impression that you had a heavy lisp. :P

  • @davethehostage haha, yeah it definitely sounds like it. I was so bummed when i saw the final video

  • Guitarworld needs too chill on the noise gate on the vocal mic haha

  • You guys are such a big inspiration! I bought the "Chris Lechford's guitar technique book" with alot of awesome exercises, however it didn't say anything about suff such as practice routines etc... I just wonder, around how much time you did practice each day before you got signed? Also how much of my practice time shuld i divide into technique, theory, chords, scales, improv, songwriting etc...? Anyways thanks for making this awesome music!

  • @alsklaftsk123 thanks for getting my book! glad to hear you like it. I played around 4 hours a day in highschool. 8 hours in college, and now a little less, but thats because Im playing full time now, so I don't have as much time to just "practice". I had everything divided evenly -chris

  • do you guys like animals as leaders? your playing reminds me alot of tosin abasi's without the jazz influence

  • @Travybakersk8er yeah of course, they opened for one of our headlining shows in Dallas over a year ago. I have known Tosin since back in the day when he played in Reflux. -chris

  • When's the next time you guys will be around the South Carolina area?

  • @superstriker00 not sure. nothing is planned as of right now. keep in mind all the tours we are doing are technically not our tours so we have no way to pick cities, etc... im sure we'll be back in the area sometime before years end. keep an eye out!

  • @scalethesummit I will man! It'd be great to see you guys soon, though!

  • You guys are simply amazing.

  • I saw your show on Thursday 21, in Dalllas. You guys didn't even seem to be trying to play it looked like it was as easy as breathing to you guys. As if you were just there to have fun.Do you just jam until you think of stuff, or jam and then record it because I think it could go either way

  • @francpala once you play this stuff a few hundred times it does become pretty effortless. we were definitely having a lot of fun! and I actually sit down and literally write our music. not much jamming or noodling around to figure stuff out, I just sit down and the ideas start flowing out. knock on wood I never loose that ability haha!

  • saw you guys in monday night. you were fucking amazing. the other bands sucked ass haha.

  • @CurseAkhenaten thanks a lot dude!

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhasfjdjalsdamsudca,ko.l;kjhgfdscmj,k;'/?

;lkjmgfdcxs.....Sorry i just had a heart attack this shit is so amazing : )

  • scale the summit, cynic, btbam, protest the hero and moon safari, =D

this would be a killer line up o.o

  • This video is perfect but its just not helping, i feel like the only way i can learn this is with a tab. :(

  • @Yourfrail there is a tab book out for the entire record, including this entire section

  • I have a question if you guys dont mind answering at all. I just bought a new puter for music and i plan on building my own personal studio. So ive been researching and doing my homework sort of speech and asking around to find out what i want and whats good equipment wise such as preamps, monitors, interfaces, and what not. If you guys do your own recording or know anything about this stuff, would you mind telling me what interface and other equipment you guys may use? Thanks

  • I've seen a lot of new bands tapping like this as apposed to shredding with it EVH style (which is cool too!). Can anyone recommend other bands/songs that do this??

  • Jizzzzzzzzz.... You guys are my new favorite band!

  • @icanmakeamess17 nice! thanks dude!

  • Man, you guys need to team up with animals as leaders and get your butts to chicago! (scale the summit would be headlining of course) :P

  • @DrBlumpkins that tour is one of those tours that has to happen eventually. so it will, keep an eye out!

  • @DrBlumpkins and include periphery in there possibly as well. Heh, well I'll be sein' you guys and periphery tomorrow night! But if AAL was in on it too my life would be complete

  • damnit you guys are too amazing!!!!!!! i need to do homework but instead i find myself here listening you your music and ordering your tab books online!! CURSES

  • @sochoii haha, well thanks dude. appreciate that!

  • You guys are pretty cool, I just started listening to you today. My drummer and I are going to see you and Periphery next thursday at the Epicenter. Will you be hanging around after the show?

  • @fashank22 sorry i just saw this comment. hope you made the show and we are always out after we play, which im sure you saw if you came out

  • @scalethesummit yeah it was sick. you are awesome I have to get the cd asap. Wish I saw you after but I didn't i must be blind man. Great show! When are you coming back to SD?

  • @scalethesummit yeah it was sick. you are awesome I have to get the cd asap. Wish I saw you after but I didn't i must be blind man. Great show! When are you coming back to SD? I love talking music from one guitarist to another. and your sound is great! I was pretty impressed.

  • Sounds like Bob Zabek's Dead Man Etude

  • Been really getting into you guys.

Chris, I really want to get your practice book.

Is it available at any Guitar Center-esque chains?

  • @jordanscotisdead hey, appreciate the interest. no, its just available through the bands online store. scalethesummitstore • com

  • I just discovered you guys today and Im blown away! Amazing musicians and songs. What kind of amps are you two using???

  • @guitarstudd thanks a lot dude, appreciate it. in this video it was a marshall and a hughes... not our amps. it was whatever Guitarworld had already set up. Since it was clean it didnt really matter to us what we played on. Hope that helps. -Chris

  • @scalethesummit So what do you play with live???

  • @guitarstudd Fractal Axe fx now.

  • You guys look so young. I feel subordinate skills-wise right now hahaha.

  • I just covered this section, and i couldn't have done it without this lesson. I'm thinking about getting the tab book. You guys are great teachers, and even better players, really inspiring. I'm really excited for your new album!

  • cynic would be proud of you guys!:D i think you should make a project with animals as leaders..

  • my ears have lost their virginity. Never have I, ever listened to such inspiring and powerful music.

  • these guys are great at what they do. I personally don't dwell on time signatures though because I believe them to be detramental to music composition actually. When I don't have to use them I don't. This is seen in lots of new music made by composers that are extreamly hard to play like the new virtuoso classical stuff.

  • damn, homies got it on lock.

  • THAT IS NOT A NORMAL 7 STRING!! THATS A JOHN PETRUCCI SIGNATURE!!

  • They look SO young!

  • what kind of practice schedual did u guys have in order to get this good when u were learning? like man you guys are insanly good

  • @mack16m thanks man. well in highschool guitar was my life so I doing around 4-6 hours a day of practicing, but having a detailed scheduled of what I was actually practicing, to prevent myself from just noodling around. then in college it was 8 plus a day and then band rehearsal. its all about dedicating time, anyone can do it, just have to be disciplined -chris

  • Oh my goodness, you're both phenomenal guitarists! I love how you can play quickly and still make beautiful melodies, instead of having the music turn into a bunch of boring arpeggios. You obviously know your theory, which is nice as well. Have you guys studied jazz?

  • I love this band! Carving Desert Canyons is such a solid album, absolutely love it! keep up the great work guys!

  • AHHHHH!!! SCALE THE SUMMIT!!! AHHH!!!!! You guys blow. my. mind. you are definitely the best instrumental band i have ever heard. possibly the best band ever. i saw you guys at the BTBAM concert and have been hooked on your music ever since! cant wait for a new album!! please please PLEASE come back to knoxville soon!!

  • @mifofif killer man, very glad to hear all of that! we'll definitely be back. we're in the studio right now recording our next album... hope you dig it as well! keep an eye out. -chris

  • Comment removed

  • @scalethesummit cant wait!!!

btw i love how you actually take the time to reply to fans on here. its great!

  • @scalethesummit ill be waiting impatiently!

  • @scalethesummit How much did your guitar cost :O im wanting to get an 8 string and yours looks pritty awesome

  • @scalethesummit ok man. you are delivering your promise to come back to knoxville so thank you. BUT, the show is 18 and up. Not cool man. very dissapointing.

  • @mifofif ha, yeah had nothing to do with us dude. the headliners booking agent booked this tour, we have no say in that sort of thing. sorry man! i dont understand 18 an up shows, makes no sense to me

  • @scalethesummit Oh well... You guys need to headline your own tour sometime! You definitely deserve it!

  • @mifofif you should check out animals as leaders

  • @greenone theyre alright

  • @mifofif ever heard of explosions in the sky? i like them better. not to say that sts isnt amazing. but eits is just...idk..i cant explain.

  • How do you guys get your clean tones to be so loud? Every time I try to play this, its either quiet or really messy

  • @taddykife Well... first off, make sure you are tapping with your finger tips. Other than that, its just working on the technique because you shouldn't be trying to slam your fingers down. Sometimes ones action height can make it harder as well, make sure its not to low. Hope that helps!

  • omfg this lick is glorius tabs plzz

  • give me a rough estimate of what is costs you to graduate from MI, im very intersted in going and when i saw you guys in cleveland i remember you saying you both attended.

  • @thricegod1288 I dont remember, I know it was a lot, just as much as any other major college. -chris

  • Chris, i'm buying an eight string at this very moment because you inspired me so much. too bad you don't have a signature. what string gauges do you use, since you use such odd tuning?

you guys should hit pop's or the pageant in St. Louis on your next tour. you have a pretty big following, just around where i live, so i'm sure you'd sell out.

can't wait for the new album.

  • @gordonfreeman3269 56 - 10, 7 string pack and then a 08 for the high G. Glad you are excited for the next album, make sure to keep an eye out for more tours! Thanks for the support! -Chris

  • Watching you guys play makes me feel like a piece of shit = you guys rock :)

  • You guys are amazing ! :)

  • i saw u guys in charlote with BTBAM my lord i loved yall it was sick will deffienetley see yall again sometime

  • I love this part. When's the next album coming out?

  • @thundermorphine Thanks a lot! We enter the studio to record in October, so early 2011. Should have a new song posted before the new year though! -Chris

  • Thanks guys, tapping is my weakest technique so this awesome tune will help out a lot!

  • I met these folks at a show in Philly, and I thought they were more fun to watch than BTBAM and Cynic, and that's really saying something. Just a brilliant frontier in music you are forging, gentlemen.

also, for those who like scale the summit, check out Termina's EP ConcEPts, it seemingly is influenced a lot by STS.

download it for free here: termina . bandcamp . com

  • This kinda makes me question my existance as a guitarist :/

  • now that is the kind of fluid mellow tapping that makes you forget all the crazy shit in this world and just relax

  • @spooner1957 yeah i play stuff like this as meditation its so awesome

  • do y'all do drugs?

  • Dang.. those two bars of 4/4 over 5/4 can't really be felt through the CD, but live.. Damn! Sounds SO good.

  • i am going to buy an agile 8 in the near future (two or three weeks) and is a 28.625 a good scale length? i plan on tuning it F#, B, E, A, D, G, b, e

  • @ACDCwarmachine yeah you want a extended scale length for that low of a tuning. mine is just 25.5 tuned to B E A D G B E G

    -chris

  • Hey do you guys have tabs for The Great Plains?

I'd buy your tab book but I don't think it really pays to buy a 30 dollar book for one song

  • @ATRTrivium12 Book is $20.

No online tabs for this song, sorry.

    -Chris

  • @scalethesummit Dang alright I guess I'll have to buy the tab book then haha.

Kind of a dumb question but are the songs tabbed for 6 string guitars?

  • @BurlingtonBulls00 never a dumb question man.

they are tabbed for 7 string, but 95% of Travis' parts are on 6 string as well as a lot of my parts and pretty much every solo on the album can be played on 6 string. Its mainly just a lot of riffing that needs the Low B of a 7 string.

    -chris

  • @scalethesummit hey Chris when you guys stopping by at the dunking donut center in rhode island big ass place for you guys to rock on!

  • @scalethesummit Hey thanks a lot for the information guys, I just bought the tab book, can't wait to learn this song!

  • You guys kinda remind me of Between The Buried And Me. Which is a good thing in my book. Also, wonderful legato technique.

  • this video's black out parts for the transitions were annoying

  • Fantastic playing...Damn you'all are some serious players for such young cats..keep on keepin on and God Bless...

  • @v2vroth thanks a lot! really appreciate that! -Chris

  • @scalethesummit I just recently got introduced to Scale the Summit. I LOVE the sound. I'm not sure if you've ever heard The Fucking Champs, but they, too, are an instrumental band. There is no comparison, you both have different sounds, but intimately unique. I applaud your equal sense of pragmatism and fearlessness that allows all talented musicians to blossom and grow. Cheers, gentlemen. You have another loyal fan. :)

  • @TheTouristArrives glad to hear that we have your full support! I know the band. I use to listen to them a lot more about 6 years ago. We use to get compared to them all the time when we first started out, but I never heard the similarities other than the fact that we are both instrumental. anyways... thanks for writing. appreciate all the support! -chris

  • @scalethesummit Is it liberating not having vocals? I know a lot of musicians feel that singing fleshes out the sound, but for your project, it feels unneccessary. As a guitarist, I admire the "vocals" of your guitars. I just got "Carving Desert Canyons". The tones and melodies and tempo of the guitars tell a story all their own. Hope to see y'all in Ithaca, New York soon! If you want to book a show up here, get in contact with me. I'll connect you to the right people. :) Love, always.

  • @TheTouristArrives yes, very. glad you like carving desert canyons. we'll definitely be back to New York. Thanks for the compliments, appreciate the support. -Chris

  • Great stuff guys. I hope to see you in Finland some day!

  • extremelly talented

  • ZOMG mind blown tbh i was expecting same metal guy tapping when you said there was a low B but that is actually proper cool :D

  • i was wondering, does your tab book come with fingerings for fingers?

  • I just bought your technique book! I'm very excited for it to come. Gonna need to get as much practice with it as possible!

Also, this is one of my favorite songs by you guys, I was in awe when I saw the playing!

  • I believe these guys graduated from Musicians Institute. I can't wait to start there.

  • You should get Jordan to do some kind of bass lessons. I just picked up a 6 string and need some good music to learn so I can adjust to the extra strings. Looking forward to buying the bass book soon!

  • @Red989 not sure if he is going to do video lessons, but he does do online skype/ichat lessons in case you are interested in that. you can email him at

    bagapac AT hotmail (dot) C 0 M

... I really hate that I can just type in the email address with youtube going nuts, its incredibly annoying.

  • finally a band with some actual knowledge on music theory! love your work guys

    keep it up

  • i've been a huge fan of tapping for a long time, and this just seriously inspired me to add a litle more creativity to what i write for my band. it also got me thinking about getting an 8 string.

  • time travelers from the future!

  • Fuck me, this is awesome. I'm ashamed to say I only discovered you today.

  • @RandomJackOfDoom thanks a lot man, no worries... we really haven't been around for that long yet! glad you really enjoyed what you heard so far. -chris

  • I saw you guys at the house of blues in New Orleans. It was a great show aside from townsend's sound problems. i got to talk to you guys bass player. he seemed to be a really nice guy. anyways, i'd never heard you guys before the show and i wasn't expecting much. thanks for surprising the fuck out of me. you guys played an awesome show. the arrangements are fucking amazing.

  • @guitarjunkie12386 nice man, thanks a lot! really appreciate all of that. hope we are able to make it back over there soon!

  • hey great job, man one question here, and its for the STS guys, i have a band, and we were thinking about playing this song on a few weeks, do u mind if we playit? yeah i mean, im the one who talks on the stage and im gonna say who composed this song, is that ok for u guys? please let me know what u think.

  • I would love to learn this song on Bass, but I only have a four string presently. =/

  • Definition of talent

  • where's the tabs dudes =(

    cheers from Mexico!

    you're fucking awesome!

  • Great vid! Thanks guys. : )

  • Sounds like Bob Zabek's dead man etude

  • Absolutely incredible guys! Missed you last time you came to FL, can't wait for you to come back so I can see you dudes live.

  • u guys rock.. like ur style... kudos..

  • im really glad somebody can write technical music but not get lost in trying to make the music technical. i love the feeling of this music but i can appreciate the skill involved. really amazing.

  • You guys make awesome music! Cheers!

  • 1:51 "Nice and Hard" Thats what she said :]

  • disregard my last comment. I just realized my stupidity

  • No offense or disrespect to StS, I love you guys - but it's funny how he explains that it's in 4/4, but he counts in 6/8 or 6/4 or something lol.

  • Just ordered your new album. Cant wait to cruse around at summer time listning to you guys over and over.

  • Just ordered your new album. Cant wait to cruse around at summer time listning to you guys over and over.

  • Hey Scale the Summit.

I covered this tapping section, and hopefully posted it as a video response to this lesson.

After hearing that you wrote that section with the tapping lick from Rode in on Horseback in mind, I went to that song and covered that section too. I had to do that one by ear though, cuz there are no tabs for any songs from Monument I think.

Anyways. Thanks for being an inspiration!

  • First off, your music is sooo goddamn good! I'm from Europe and me and a mate are trying to spread your music (videos, they'll have to buy your album themselves of course) :D

Second, I like that at almost every comment I see on your videos there is a reply from you. That is awesome!

  • thanks a lot man, really appreciate all the support. glad to hear you are helping to spread the word! hope to make it to Europe soon!

    -chris

  • thanks a lot! there are talks of us going over there in 2010. so keep an eye out.

    -chris

  • @scalethesummit Saw you guys in Charlotte NC with BTBAM.

    Hands down, best show ever.

  • Man this part bakes my noodle. I'll have to spend many hours practicing this lick.

  • wow

  • Last August at Merriweather Post in MD, with prog nation EPIC

  • on 4:44 it sounds like smile in your sleep by silverstein

  • these guys are both amazin guitarists, both attended GIT in california

  • God damn I saw you dudes at the State Theater with BTBAM. Honestly, you tore that shit up. I haven't bought you're album yet cause I'm broke as a joke but I plan on it. Make sure you come back soon.

  • damn you guys are great musicians. i wanna write some stuff like this too :D

  • Saw you guys in Toronto with BTBAM. Your set was tight, best band there (except for btbam but im really biased lol). Totally bought your CD and have been digging it ever since. Gonna try and learn some of your tunes later but im afriad it might encourage me to start wanting a 7 or 8 string guitar on top of the countless ones I already want, and im dead broke lol. either way take care guys i hope u come back soon id love to see you again and i really hope u make it big, lord knows you deserve it.

  • KIller man, thanks for the support! Glad to hear you picked up a cd! Thanks!

And we definitely look forward to coming back. That was our second time in Toronto, both were amazing shows. Both sold out, good times.

    -Chris

  • I learned this song today!! It's amazing and fun to play!!

  • Sweet video. BTW, I got your guitar technique book and it's awesome! Thanks for the extras, as well. I have the STS bottle opener on my keychain!

  • nice dude, thanks for getting my book.

we always throw in the free stuff! glad you dig it! make sure that bottle gets some use, but after you practice, haha.
