  • Hi Jazzdrummer83,

The snare is a single ply wood Slingerland drum. It is from the late 1960's. I found the snare a year after I purchased the set. It matches the finish perfectly. I was lucky to find it.

    Thanks

    Mike

  • nice kit, what is the snare model ? Slingerland artist series or what ? I see the Zoomatic strainer there

  • KendalAudiologist ,

    Mike

  • I saw Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick live playing a double bass set of Slingerland 1939 Radio King. god, they sounded good :)

  • Nice job the drums sound great, I still have my slingerland 1970's set in black. Keep on drummin man..Steve

  • Are there certain years of Slingerland drums that you recommend? Are there lines or models that are better? How do we know what to look for?

  • Hi grahamspice,

I think all the best Slingerland drums are from the 1960s, look for the black and gold badge. Books by Rob Cook on the history of Slingerland drum company are packed with info. I hope this helps you.

    Thanks

    Mike

  • i have a 1964 slingerland snare it is the best snare i have ever heard

  • Very nice work there...we need more clips like this on youtube. The young kids need to see drumming like this. I have a similar set....you might get a kick out of my solo clips on here as well. Good job! I

  • Hi Drumminman4U,

Thank you for the nice comments.

  • Buddy Rich`s favorite set was Slingerland. Without any paid endorsements he finished his career with slingerland radio King drums. Gene Krupa the King of Swing favored Slingerland thruout his career. The awesome Neil Peart recorded Rush`s first 6 albums on slingerland drums.Bill Ward of black sabbath used slingerland drums on all there albums with Ozzy. Phil Ehart from Kansas used slingerand on all there great hits from the 70`s. I agree with Buddy. Vintage slingerland drums are the best.

  • Thank God! Someone who can play the drums, cymbals, and make em sound sweet, use toms instead of a double kick all the time. Nice to hear the old sound, Mike! Oh yea, I have a 5 pc Slingerland1972 Buddy Rich Special jazz Kit also.BOP wrap covering. Have a nice one.

  • 1hotdilf,

    Thanks for the nice complements.

    Mike

  • COB snare?

  • hello great drumming! what is your cymbal configuration, I mean the size and model ? I also play Bosphorus the Versa series and I like them a lot but Im trying to get that jazz sound that you have!

  • Hi loko306,

Hello Thank you for the nice comments. The cymbals are Bosphorus Masters series. The Hi-Hats are 14 inch. The left side is 19 inch and the main ride is 22 inch I also have a main crash of 18 inch on far right . All of them are light weight and very thin. I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again.

    Mike

  • Hey tubemenow, great thumbnail picture !!! Thanks for putting it up there. It looks good.

I am sending your videos to a coworker who wants to learn drumset.

  • CYmbals sound GREAT -sabian....

    Mike

  • I havn't seen such quality drumming and such style in a long while.

  • Thank you

    Mike Gallichio

  • My church has a slingerland kit, I was suprised when i found out gibson made them.

  • Hello dmonks40

These drums were made in the 1960's in the Slingerland Factory in Niles, Illinois. I believe Gibson now builds Slingerland.

    Thanks and Enjoy

  • yeah, new Slingreland was being built by Gibson but they are about to go out of business. their future is at stake now. they never really did well on the market because they are just like custom drums, they use keller shells are pretty much slap a retro wrap on them and charge the hell out of you. vintage slingerland is the best and there is still a fair amount on ebay.

  • what are the 2 suspended cymbals? what sizes and line of bosphorus? kit sounds awsome and nice drumming.

  • Hello sOurabh,

The cymbals are Bosphorus Master series. 14'' hats, 19 crash/ride, 22''ride. 18'' crash

    Enjoy!

    Mike Gallichio

  • i was just listening to Shelly Manne's 'Me and Some Drums' tune and the drum sound reminded me a lot of you and your Slingerlands. I still love your sound. I think Shelly Manne was using Leedy's made by Slingerland.

  • Hello octopoll, It is nice to be compared to Shelly Manne's sound. Thank you for the complement. I will have to look for the tune and give it a listen.

    Thanks again

    Mike Gallichio

  • I wish I would have this set. It sounds excellent. Every part of it. The snare is fantastic. The toms and bassdrum also. And to top this the cymbals are really wonderful.

By the way your drumming is good, too.

You see, you don't need a big drumset to sound excellent.

  • Hannibu,

Thank you for the nice comments.

    Mike Gallichio

  • Snare sounds so full and delicious. I can only imagine how good that feels to play... Its steel is it not?

  • Thank you, The snare is a matching 1960's wood drum. 5&1/2'' x 14'' with Zoomatic strainer and rim shot hoops (chrome over brass). You can't see it in the video but it is the Artist model single ply maple shell with reinforcing hoops inside top and bottom. One tone control. Very sought after and it plays like a hot knife through butter. Remo heads on batter and snare side. I like this Slingerland set very much.

    Thanks again

    Mike Gallichio

  • Awesome playing Mike, your drums and Bosphorus symbals are fantastic! Thanks Mike.

  • I just got another Slingerland set from a friend who had it stored away. Its from '72 and is the Buddy Rich model. Its really really nice! It doesn't have the matching floor toms though, one of them is the next size up. I have never fully understood having the same size floor toms, maybe someone can explain? anyway thanks again for posting this as it has got me hooked on Slingerlands.

  • i got a Slingerland after hearing this. The best set I have had. I like it more than my 70's Gretsch, 80's Tama Cordia and 60s Premier and even more than my 60s Rogers (none of which I have now). I have some Aquarian Vintage series drumheads on and it sounds great. I was thinking of the Remo's.. What Remo's do you have on this set? Your cymbals sound great too. I just tried the New Orleans series which was very nice.

Thanks for putting up the Slingerland here.

  • Hello octopoli,

Thank you for the comments. The heads are Remo Weather King Ambassador. You have had some nice sets. What year Slingerland did you get? What finish? I think you will love your Slingerland set. Have fun and post some video of yout new Slingerland,

    Take care

    Mike Gallichio

  • Thanks Mike. I waited too long on the 73 walnut, which was in mint cond. I found a '71 maple and i am glad i got it. I would like to find a walnut too. I don't have a matching snare. I am swiching between a 60s Rogers dynasonic and a 60s Premier royal ace left over from my old sets. I will look out for a maching Slingerland, your snare sounds great!. What other sets do you like?

  • Octopoli,

I also like Gretsch and Drum Workshop. I found my snare a year later, It matches perfectly in color and was built around the same time late 1960's It is a single ply and I am happy with the sound. If you take your time you will find a matching snare. I would like to see a photo of your set.

    Take care

    Mike

  • Thank you for the complement The set is 1960's Slingerland. The cymbals are Bosphorus Master series. 14'' hats, 19 crash/ride, 22''ride. 18'' crash

    Enjoy!

    Mike Gallichio

  • Nice Set!! Nice Drumming!!!. What are that cymbals models and sizes ?

  • very bebop like tuning, nice drums and amazing playing!

  • agreed, love slingerlands, i'm looking for a nice 70s vintage

  • really good!!! love the playing and the Slingerland sounds fantastic . Is that a Slingerland Set-o-matic? 14x22 bass? I was going to buy an early 70s walnut set, do you know if they are as good as the set you have?

  • Thank you for the kind words. The bass is a 14x22, This set was built in the late 1960s. I would think the walnut set of the 70s would be just as nice. Yes the small tom holder is a set-o-matic. I really enjoy this set.

    Take care

    Mike

  • i wish i had badges on my slingerland. but there arent any on there.

  • Awesome Kit!! Awesome Playing!! By the way, what brand and size sticks do you favor? I prefer 5A Vic Firth.

  • Hello and thanks for the kind words.

I use Regal Tip by Calato 5A wood and nylon tips.

    Mike Gallichio

  • The kit sounds good but...How long have you been playing? Who did you study under?

  • I have been playing in and around the Chicago area for about 40 years. I studied with Phil Stanger at The Phil Stanger Percussion Studio Downtown Chicago for 12 years. I have been teaching for 10 years. I hope you enjoy the video.

    Thanks Mike Gallichio

  • For some reason, old Slingerland's have this incredible sharpness that I've never heard on any other set. Drumming is wonderful. You are on my faves.

  • Thank you

    Mike Gallichio

  • What cymbals do you use man? (I know bosphorus but which of them)

  • They are the Master Series.

    Thanks

    Mike

  • are these blue or black badge Slingerlands? they sound killer!

  • Thanks for the kind words. The drums are Mint 1960's black and gold badge Slingerland. With Remo heads. I play these drums every day. The small camcorder does not capture the full sound of this set.

    Mike Gallichio

  • newer slingerlands suck the old ones pwn anyway sweet combo of drums and cymbals

  • Yes I did find a matching snare about a year later. It is from the same late 60's and matches perfect. Thanks for the comments.

  • is it a matching snare

  • Hi nbdrums,

Yes it is a matching snare.

    Mike

  • wow that kit sounds really good wow

  • Thank you

    Mike

  • Wow... Sounds Great!!

  • Hello vr6,
