It baffles me that any musician makes money in todays modern world. Now I agree it's hard to fill sorry for the record companies, or even the musicians who already have a lot of money, but at the same time, it's not fair for young up and coming musicians to not get anything. The reason why musicians do what they do, is because they love to do it, so much to the point where they want to make a living off it. I just think it's wrong to do that. They need to make a living too.

If you listen to the video he says that he doesn't want the company to make money he wants the artist themselves to make money off of the music. Why shouldn't artists get paid for doing what they have worked so hard to produce?
if anyone understood how much time and effort that goes into creating quality music, especially within a group dynamic, they wouldn't be so quick to bitch about artists wanting to make money off their music. kind of the point is, to make enough money to support yourself so you can have the free time to continue to work on music more often, rather than having to deal with a day job. there's nothing wrong with mixing art and your profession, but it takes even more effort and time to do so.

@powerofthepistols It costs a fuckton of money to record a professional album...record labels are going cut into artist profits whether those profits are from album sales or concert/merchandise sales. Unless the concept people are shooting for is destruction of the whole industry where individual bands are responsible for having their own means of recording. Fine by me, though I think still a bit impractical right now.
@powerofthepistols The thing is a lot of small bands have to live off their royalties untill they are in the position of making enough money from live shows or they don't get anywhere and have to give it up.
@powerofthepistols if corporations/labels are only concerned with censorship and making slaves of their artists Then Fuck them! you forget about the guys who own countries with millions and millions of financial slaves who bands and people like this are alerting the people of.... go relenquish another of your freedoms!
i do buy cds hear and their but i torrent only ones that arent worth my money or ones i bought along time ago but either misplaced or had damage done to the disc! as for movies well i torrent them all unless i really like them i'll buy a decent used copy of it on blu ray! maybe hollywood & the music industry should reconsider & start making good material again..
actually, RATM do support socialism, communism, & an anarchist-like ideology (Libertarian-Socialism). I'm a communist myself, & they are strong supporters of the very ideologies. And please don't compare true communism with capitalist-dictators like later Mao, or Stalin. Or even to people like Kim Jung il. I hate it when people choose to claim such BS just because they lack the knowledge of world history.
I know what you mean. My grandparents were both communists during the anti-fascist movement of the 40's and 50's, (belonging to the faction of LA jewish, progressive communists) so I understand the difference between Stalinist communism (basically fascism), and the ideologies of Marx. That, and I had a pretty kick-ass World History teacher. I certaintly don't agree with all of Marx's ideals (I consder myself somewhat socialist, partly liberal, and part non partisan), but I respect your openess.
Thanks. I would consider myself more of a democratic-socialist, but my inevitable goal is true communism. But either way, thanks for the respect. Red love & salutes to you.
In other words you support a form of statism ("democratic socialism" is a contradiction in terms, unless you are referring to non-state socialism, which the people who call themselves "democratic socialists" hate). You do not deserve the anarchist label you've given yourself.
I'm an anarcho-communist. I don't believe in the state, & the power it holds. What I believe in is true democracy & true freedom. Which can't be granted through state-controlled territories.
i agree i am sick of people saying communism is horible to me because of russia and china. Russia and China are both key examples of when an evil dictator takes power and fucks it all up. Stalinism is not true communism
you think your so profound and smart since you know classifications of politics FUCK THAT shit. i hate the fact that everyone seems to be some psedo intellect when it comes to this shit. what matters is physics , math and science. if i can develope beyond your nation what does the dogma of your goverment even matter . thats where the real power is
u can't even spell pseudo intellectual...Math, physics and science are useless without language and the ability to articulate what you are thinking. Ask any great scientist that. Numbers are empty, for the most part, in life. Especially in things like activism, you can't just boil everything down to an equation, or rail off statistics because they're meaningless.
Yeah he "wanted" to send 2 bucks to Joe Strummer... he just NEVER fuckin DID. So shut the fuck up with this phony ass ploy to try to get me to pay for your cd, Tom Morelow. I've BitTorrented your entire catalog for FREE. Suck it.
PS Feeding the homeless doesn't do anything but make homeless people feel like they dont need to get a job. Fuckin eutopian wannabe no-grasp-on-reality-havin' yellabone.
I think that the artist should get all of the money. That is one reason that you should not really by albums because it really isnt helping the band. Just send the band money once in a while
Yes, I do understand what you are saying but I believe its false. They are paid when you buy one of their cds. The record companies not only help in the production of your product, but they also advertise for that band as well so they are in fact doing their share and deserve money as well.
no labels are pressing the albums producing art work, videos ,supportin nationwide tours .all taking a roll of the dice on your shithole band that are 100s more that sound like yours. So they deserve a chunk of the change
One thing to keep in mind -- if you REALLY support the artist, go ahead and pirate the CD, the artist will only get like 5 cents out of the sale anyway. But SEE THEM LIVE. That's how artists can truly show their audience how talented they are in person, and that's also how the artist gets all the big bucks without the middleman of the record store stealing 95% of the profits.
Keep piracy alive to spread the music, keep the live shows alive to spread the true musical vibe
I dont wanna buya CD were like 90% of the price i bought goes to the record label who just puts it in a store, when what i buy will actually help out the artist then sure..they could sell it online on their own and make 100% profit but i guess they are just that stupid....lol
Actually, BECAUSE it was CNN, you need to keep in mind that CNN chose to only broadcast those 21 freakin' seconds out of a possible 10 minute interview. Maybe he had a lot of controversial ideas to add or a good explanation as to WHY he chose to say what he did. But we'll never know, because CNN took the rest of it out.
This short clip isn't really a full-on condemnation of piracy. I'd hate to know for certain that RATM were ever against piracy, and I don't think they would be - they have a message to spread, and the music is more important than the money.
I want to play music and I want to be payed for it. Obviously the more money you have the better off you are, but personally I just want "enough" I don't need anymore than that. I don't need a giant house with a swimming pool in the $ shape. I need enough to keep me and my family happy, safe, feed, clothed, and secure with a some left over for fun. That's all. Bottom line CD's should cost no more than 6-8 dollars. And if you truly admire the musician(s), you'll buy instead of downloading anyway.
Well said. I still buy all of my music by CD's. I experimented with Napster and Limewire but felt a bit guilty about it, and also found I didn't have the satisfaction of being able to flip through my CD collection. I don't use iTunes either, even though it's legal. I burn my CD's to my computer and then just use iTunes to sync them to my iPod.
That's what I do. I use itunes to download the album art work but that dosen't cost anything. I buy my music in stores. I've used shareware stuff but not for more than like 8 or 9 songs. It's usually just for one song. I don't want to buy a whole cd for that one song. I guess I could use itunes but that involves your credit card so...I don't know.
No I mean in general. The more money you have the better off you'll be. Like you'll have a nice house, good insurance, etc. Money dosent' effect your musicianship. I mean it can put more resources at your hands so that could help but I mean there are alot of great musicians who grew up poor. But there are some that grew up well off. But money has nothing to do with it.
your correct bill gates is not an amazing musician. but he is a successful software deseiger. thats not even what fullmetalfunk meant in the first place
how do you make the connection between software design and fullmetalfunk? Maby a good idea to read what you are commenting on before expressing your insightful oppinions?
he never designed software.. he bought it from someone else and marketed it... and it was a lousy ripoff of another program anyways, i forget what it was though
Think about it. If CD's cost ike 13 14 bucks a pop or you can download it for free. What are you going to do? Deprive yourself of music so you can give money to big companies. I'm a musician. I think musicians should be payed but at the same time musicians make ALOT of money. Why not cut that down a bit? If people really cared about the art then they would be fine playing music for the same wage a tregular person makes.
a 'regular person's wages are not adequate. real wages have stagnated since the 80s and are declining. probably far more drastically soon.
i say if artists want my money, sell me something worth buying. if artists want to be owned by a large record label, they can expect to deal with the advantages and disadvantages of that choice.
i REALLY liked einstuerzende neubauten's last three 'supporter projects' online. brilliant in every way, and a great model for some artists to try out.
They preach against the wealthy and greedy in "Sleep now in the fire." but then turn around and live in their mansions and tell people they should pay for music.
How does isolating the fact that he pirated music make him look bad?

@powerofthepistols if corporations/labels are only concerned with censorship and making slaves of their artists Then Fuck them! you forget about the guys who own countries with millions and millions of financial slaves who bands and people like this are alerting the people of.... go relenquish another of your freedoms!

actually, RATM do support socialism, communism, & an anarchist-like ideology (Libertarian-Socialism). I'm a communist myself, & they are strong supporters of the very ideologies. And please don't compare true communism with capitalist-dictators like later Mao, or Stalin. Or even to people like Kim Jung il. I hate it when people choose to claim such BS just because they lack the knowledge of world history.
theanarchist16 2 years ago 4
I know what you mean. My grandparents were both communists during the anti-fascist movement of the 40's and 50's, (belonging to the faction of LA jewish, progressive communists) so I understand the difference between Stalinist communism (basically fascism), and the ideologies of Marx. That, and I had a pretty kick-ass World History teacher. I certaintly don't agree with all of Marx's ideals (I consder myself somewhat socialist, partly liberal, and part non partisan), but I respect your openess.
JazzBassDude 2 years ago 2
Thanks. I would consider myself more of a democratic-socialist, but my inevitable goal is true communism. But either way, thanks for the respect. Red love & salutes to you.
theanarchist16 2 years ago
In other words you support a form of statism ("democratic socialism" is a contradiction in terms, unless you are referring to non-state socialism, which the people who call themselves "democratic socialists" hate). You do not deserve the anarchist label you've given yourself.
crazymiles 2 years ago
I'm an anarcho-communist. I don't believe in the state, & the power it holds. What I believe in is true democracy & true freedom. Which can't be granted through state-controlled territories.
theanarchist16 2 years ago
i agree i am sick of people saying communism is horible to me because of russia and china. Russia and China are both key examples of when an evil dictator takes power and fucks it all up. Stalinism is not true communism

you think your so profound and smart since you know classifications of politics FUCK THAT shit. i hate the fact that everyone seems to be some psedo intellect when it comes to this shit. what matters is physics , math and science. if i can develope beyond your nation what does the dogma of your goverment even matter . thats where the real power is
heyitsmejojo 2 years ago
u can't even spell pseudo intellectual...Math, physics and science are useless without language and the ability to articulate what you are thinking. Ask any great scientist that. Numbers are empty, for the most part, in life. Especially in things like activism, you can't just boil everything down to an equation, or rail off statistics because they're meaningless.

I think that the artist should get all of the money. That is one reason that you should not really by albums because it really isnt helping the band. Just send the band money once in a while
RageTruth 2 years ago 5
lol do this to my band... even though iut's not established just...... send me money lol
arnolddrummer 2 years ago 2
Yes, I do understand what you are saying but I believe its false. They are paid when you buy one of their cds. The record companies not only help in the production of your product, but they also advertise for that band as well so they are in fact doing their share and deserve money as well.
DetIzRed 2 years ago
yes but the don't deserve over 90 percent which is what they usually get. Besides, they restrict free speech and tie you down, fuck that.
Street sweeper social club is indie for a reason.

no labels are pressing the albums producing art work, videos ,supportin nationwide tours .all taking a roll of the dice on your shithole band that are 100s more that sound like yours. So they deserve a chunk of the change

EmporrerElliot, it's not sold directly to the audience unless its off the internet or off the street. you have no idea what you got yourself into.
asthenia166 2 years ago
One thing to keep in mind -- if you REALLY support the artist, go ahead and pirate the CD, the artist will only get like 5 cents out of the sale anyway. But SEE THEM LIVE. That's how artists can truly show their audience how talented they are in person, and that's also how the artist gets all the big bucks without the middleman of the record store stealing 95% of the profits.
Keep piracy alive to spread the music, keep the live shows alive to spread the true musical vibe

I dont wanna buya CD were like 90% of the price i bought goes to the record label who just puts it in a store, when what i buy will actually help out the artist then sure..they could sell it online on their own and make 100% profit but i guess they are just that stupid....lol

let's not mention this was on CNN, an interview by a huge corporate news entity which paid him handsomely for the appearance....
........
skrape110 2 years ago
Actually, BECAUSE it was CNN, you need to keep in mind that CNN chose to only broadcast those 21 freakin' seconds out of a possible 10 minute interview. Maybe he had a lot of controversial ideas to add or a good explanation as to WHY he chose to say what he did. But we'll never know, because CNN took the rest of it out.
EmperorElliott 2 years ago 2
What you fail to realize is how Tom donates a lot of the money he gets from doing interviews such as these.
xloathingandlustx 2 years ago 3

And if you truly admire the musician(s), you'll buy instead of downloading anyway.
fullmetalfunk 3 years ago
Well said. I still buy all of my music by CD's. I experimented with Napster and Limewire but felt a bit guilty about it, and also found I didn't have the satisfaction of being able to flip through my CD collection. I don't use iTunes either, even though it's legal. I burn my CD's to my computer and then just use iTunes to sync them to my iPod.
canadianmaple09 3 years ago
That's what I do. I use itunes to download the album art work but that dosen't cost anything. I buy my music in stores. I've used shareware stuff but not for more than like 8 or 9 songs. It's usually just for one song. I don't want to buy a whole cd for that one song. I guess I could use itunes but that involves your credit card so...I don't know.
fullmetalfunk 3 years ago
The more money you have the better you are? Well then why isn't Bill Gates one of our best musicians?
Ekis86 3 years ago
No I mean in general. The more money you have the better off you'll be. Like you'll have a nice house, good insurance, etc. Money dosent' effect your musicianship. I mean it can put more resources at your hands so that could help but I mean there are alot of great musicians who grew up poor. But there are some that grew up well off. But money has nothing to do with it.
fullmetalfunk 3 years ago
your correct bill gates is not an amazing musician. but he is a successful software deseiger. thats not even what fullmetalfunk meant in the first place
PTHrules 3 years ago
how do you make the connection between software design and fullmetalfunk? Maby a good idea to read what you are commenting on before expressing your insightful oppinions?

he never designed software.. he bought it from someone else and marketed it... and it was a lousy ripoff of another program anyways, i forget what it was though

what are you talking about, Bill shreds
huntersguitar95 3 years ago 3
i'm talking about how i fkd ur mom up d as while she wrote some papers discarding u as her son/daughter
Ekis86 3 years ago
Think about it. If CD's cost ike 13 14 bucks a pop or you can download it for free. What are you going to do? Deprive yourself of music so you can give money to big companies. I'm a musician. I think musicians should be payed but at the same time musicians make ALOT of money. Why not cut that down a bit? If people really cared about the art then they would be fine playing music for the same wage a tregular person makes.
fullmetalfunk 3 years ago
a 'regular person's wages are not adequate. real wages have stagnated since the 80s and are declining. probably far more drastically soon.
i say if artists want my money, sell me something worth buying. if artists want to be owned by a large record label, they can expect to deal with the advantages and disadvantages of that choice.
i REALLY liked einstuerzende neubauten's last three 'supporter projects' online. brilliant in every way, and a great model for some artists to try out.
