Someone might ask "If Polish underground and authorities in exile where so awesome, why haven't I herd anything about them?" That's because at the end of war Allies betrayed Poles under Soviet pressure - they stopped to recognise rightful government and let Stalin do as he pleased with Poland. Members of underground where persecuted, often imprisoned or even killed. Worst repressions stopped after '56, however only after '89 people could freely speak about this matters.
As you can see from this film they actually did something to help Jews, they also gave detailed info about what was happening to Allies (google such names as Jan Karski, or Witold Pilecki) but it met with disbelieve. So not only individual Poles acted heroically in face of Holocaust, but Polish STATE was only one that tried to do something directly about it.
I want to ask everyone to pay special attention to part about Polish underground. The so called Polish Underground State had both civilian and military branch - the Home Army (pol. Armia Krajowa - AK) and it represented the legal Polish government in exile in London (Poland was conquered at the beginning of WWII, but it never officially surrendered like France for example)

The Nazis had forced all the Jews to register in the city with ID cards: since your name and your family's name was on a registry, the Nazis could track you down and had control over your identity. I would have hidden her in a safehouse for the resistance and falsified records that she died of typhus.
