I like how non-judgemental Japan society seems. A person can wander around freely and not feel out of place. Maybe that's just a foreigner's perspective though, the native people probably feel all of the ills which explains the high suicide rate.

Emma, before you fly out from Narita, you should take a half day to visit Narita-San (成田山) if you haven't done so already. It's a very famous and large Buddhist temple complex on a hill very near JR or Keisei Narita Station, with a road lined with traditional houses and shops leading up to it and an enormous Japanese garden behind it. Right now you can enjoy many food vendors out along the road because of the new year's festivities. I think it will be worth your time. Enjoy your stay in Japan.
