Hi Peter, it's amazing that you've gone to great lengths to create these informative videos, and half the time all you get it slagged off by a bunch of deluded, unthinking, non musicians. Sometimes you just can't win. btw. I loved you CF gig in Botswana. Must have been great fun.
Yes. Thats why I´ve used Midi only for a few months.
I don´t miss it. (but still like the piece I´ve played here)
by the way:
That´s something interresting about youtube,
I made up the song that day. Most of it is improvised anyway. Never played it again. It would be forgotten a long time ago but people are still having strange discussions about it.
Honestly didn't really hear much difference in the tone. Anyway, to the folks below:
I bought my six string bass because I wanted a five string and the six was too cheap to pass up. I only use the sixth string in one song, and if I wanted, I could just play it on a regular five, but it's easier. Other than that, the extra strings make walking much easier for me.
Yes! most 5 and 6 string players dont even know their bass(ic) 4 on the floor, but everybody is free to make the music they like to hear. Thats what makes it sooo beautiful. Alas..I guess gary wont be buyin my cd..sigh...
Gary you truly suck. i picked up the bass with no desire to be a supporting actor. Its not ego. its choice. and my voice. I shouldnt have to change to a violin sax or play soft or in the background because YOU are threatened. THATS real
Who said anything about work? When I work I stay in the pocket because Im being paid to. And when I want to shred I go looking for hot rods like myself. So far Im not lonely...
Wow. If this guy were playing like this with his band, then I'd understand while everyone is getting so worked up. ...But he's playing a solo.
And as for GaryNull who said "nobody picks up the bass for the sound." Well...hahaha... I'll just let you think that, Gary, and we'll see where it gets you - it speaks volumes about your character.
But why does it matter? I agree I'm not a fan of all this tapping and shredding nonsense but I'm not going to complain if someone does it, because that's their prerogative. Just not mine.
Although this performance sounds better than most on here (not too muddy) I don't see why you just don't get a guitar or piano to play this.
That is what I do. I play bass mainly, and guitar on the side.
If you doing this just for fun, fine.
But playing bass in a band, . . a good bassist shines in the background. There are not many good bass players around as it is, . that is why I don't like damn 5 and 6 string basses.
If you'd like to divert your attention to most session bassists like Nathan East, Anthony Jackson, Bakithi Kumalo, Chuck Rainey, or countless others who have a shed load more experience than you and 1000's of records under their belt, you'll find that a.) not only are you completely wrong, but b.) 5 and 6 string basses are favored by many bassists and engineers around the world that don't share your misinformed and naive view.
I was making the point about how "bass players" are using 5 and 6 string basses like a guitars instead of playing bass.
I don't have a problem with 5 and 6 strings used to play bass, as it should be played, . . in the background.
The sign of a great player is that they shine in the background, . . unless you're Jeff Berlin, . . . but not many (if any) can come close to his abilities.
Thou shall stay in the back. Thou shall not play with a pick. Thou shall not slap the bass. Thou shall not tap the bass. Thou must play as I tell you to play. I am the decider of all things appropriate to your music. Thou shall be as limited a player as I am. I hath spoken!!!
>> who are these 5 & 6 string bass players you talking about?
The ones that play the bass like it's a guitar instead of a bass. Most of the time it sounds like shit because it's too muddy, . . but aside from that, these players should just pick up a guitar or play the piano instead. Listen to "whatever gets you throught the night" by Lennon. Perfect example of amazing bass playing, . . but not taking over the song. Playing a bass line like that is more impressive than these 6 string clowns.
GaryNull: you said it man, I pretty much agree with you. Each time I go to the Guitar Center I see these kids, slapping and popping, but if you asked them what notes are in a C 7+ they have no fucking clue. Bass guitar 4 string was meant for breaking up the notes in a cord, it's not a solo instrument. If you want to play multiple notes at the same time then go and play a guitar.
Like me, you got a -7 hands down rating on your comment.
I still stand by my main point:
If you want to play guitar, play guitar, . . but don't pick up a fucking 6 string bass and say "oh look what I can do" like you're trying to impress someone because you're playing a "bass".
This is just fucking nonsense.
The only one who can pull this trick off is Jeff Berlin, and he does it with a 4 string!
Why is he the only one. What is wrong with showing off. By the way, who gives a damn about what instrument is being used. The point of music is to make music. I don't see anything wrong with playing chords and solos on bass or guitar if the outcome is what I am looking for.
you must truly suck to want to discourage a musician to find his peak abilities. i am a bassist because of its gorgeous tonal range. And im too fucking good to back up lames.
@GaryNull nobody pick up a bass for the sound ? AHAHAAHH you're just to funny man =) oooh by the way, I began playing bass because i thought it was a kick ass instrument, with a great sound, yeah, no joke man ! you should listen carefully I think !
@renaudbassplayer - yes some people do pick up the bass because they love it, and that is great. But the majoriity of bass players in rock bands play bass because they can't play guitar well enough or sing good.
Huh? I play the bass myself. And I know DAMN well the difference. You need to get real. You obviously are no musician. Every instrument has sound. I like the bass because of its sound.
..."in the background" is about as unspecific as you can get.
When a bass player is playing a bass function, but is playing aggressively and in doing so calling attention to themselves, are they in error? ...Was Willie Weeks f'in' up on Little Ghetto Boy? Was Jaco playing too much on Havona? Was Jamerson high as f' on What's Happenin' Brother? ...Well, probably. :)
I shouldn't let this get me so worked up... Sorry.
OK, I'm tired of you pretending that your opinion is fact. You don't like basses to do anything other than be in the background. Thats fine. But don't act like any playing that isn't that, is not real bass playing.
Besides, the original function of electric bass was to identify what chord the song was on at any given time.
Chord identification, walking, grooving, chord voicing, soloing, slapping, tapping, using harmonics...these are all functions of a bass player.
I don't even see my comment anymore. So much about freedom of speach. Just like in real life, you say something that the majority don't want to hear, next thing you know you are silenced.
Uh. I'm pretty sure that if someone plays a 6-String Bass then they want to play a 6-String Bass. How can you possibly say a Six-String doesn't sound good? Do they play a magical 13th note that doesn't sound good? Do they play the notes differently then other stringed instruments? How can it sound bad? You talk shit about people not knowing anything about music, but you're just as close-minded and ignorant. I hope you can understand someday that it's music. The means of playing it matter little.
@GaryNull Really????????? well im a bassist and I picked up bass cause i liked how they sound and plus Dream Theatre's bassist is fucking silly :P, I picked up a 5 string to eliminate the need to use drop tunings when im playing for multiple bands or songs with different tunings as it adds a low B, I've been recently looking at getting a 6-string so that I have an extended range and cover 2 and a half octaves with one hand position, as it adds a high C.
@WolfsGimpyWrath As far as I'm aware that sounds nothing like wanting to be a guitarist. I don't see how the addition of extra strings makes you want to be anything else, considering the addition of an extra string doesn't change the tonal qualities. You just sound like an ignorant dick who knows nothing about music apart from stereotypes.
@Forbelicious This guy is an excellent player and I wasn't commenting on his playing. He has skill and a good ear. I was just giving my (unpopular) opinion. Is there any truth to way I say? I don't know.
It all boils down to this : If you like something, that's all that matters and what anyone else thinks should matter much or at all.
It's good to see it tracking from finger-picking. I picked one up a few weeks ago, but have the pickup back-ordered. I've been working on my flat-picking so the Axon can use the pick transient, but prefer to finger-pick. Did you modify your right-hand technique at all to mimic the pick transient? no I wouldn´t change my playing for that. I´ve only had the Axon for a few hours, when I took the Video. I also sold it 2 month later. I spent too much time turning knobs instead of practicing.
The Axon allows you to switch it´s sensitivity between fingering and picking.
I've had the Axon for a few months now. I like the speed of the pick transient, so I don't use the "finger" setting. I also spent a lot of time pushing buttons and working on my flat-pick skills. I thought I'd shock people when I play live, but people generally just see a band and hear music, so it only seems odd to other musicians. I found it's just another way to get the music inside my head to come out. It's all about music.
Really Cool! Nice playing & great sounds. I'm a keyboardist 1st & bassist 2nd. I use a Line6 processor which has some bass/synth presets, but haven't played w/ MIDI on bass, yet.

I play guitar and I will openly say I have made some kick ass riffs using the sounds of a bass, playing single notes and chords.
These riffs were then transferred to guitar.
If I didn't also play bass I'd never have those guitar riffs, so both kick ass, basses and guitars.
Only thing I like the sound of better than a bass is a double bass!
