Criminals don't usually buy their guns by applying for permits, they get them on the street and since there are so many guns manufactured outside the U.S. gun control would just mean gun trafficking would be a bigger business. Take a look at the FBI's stats from June of this year, since 2005 gun sales have skyrocketed, yet violent crime has declined, especially murder. If everyone is armed then there is no easy target.

No, I think a firearm can help protect me since I can't return fire with my fists unless the person is within a few feet of me. I also know I could stop someone with my pistol if they're trying to kill other people. Your point is moot because nothing in the world can protect someone 100% but guess what, our troops still wear body armor because it can improve their chances.
