Bigshonking about you know noghting about cranes. Frist you don't know what type of wire rope they are using or how many parts of line are on the the sheeves in the blocks. This is the opertor fault a 100%, Total dumdass..
I drive these cranes daily, you piss flap, and if kept in accordance with manufacturers instructions the wires are designed to break before the boom. But the operator was definitely a dick head like you and was at fault. None the less booms dont fall out of the sky like that if in good order.
@akmike30 how do you know the crane didn't malfunction? we had it once, crane got stuck on hoist and spreader came right up to the cabin. i'll bet that if it hooked up on the ship, we might have seen the same result.
What really happened is there electricians turned the over-load off on the crane so driver had no chance to know he was over loading and the boom snapped R.I.P
Ahhh... stupid people hard a work. you'd think after trying to pick it up and it wouldnt go... this idiot would of figured something wasnt right and stopped... but not this idiot.
Doesn't look like a maintenance issue, looked more like the ship began backing up while the crane hook was still anchored to the deck. Side loads snapped the boom.
What an Idiot! the guy on the ships trying to tell the retard to stop lifting and he just keeps doing it. You'd think this guy could see... Uh... why no it pick up when i pull up on container? As bill envall would say "Here's your sign"
You'd think when it didn't lift the first time he'd get the point. You can see the lasher or hatchtender waving like a nut but to no avail. Lucky people right there.
It was a very old crane (20 yrs old or so) and there was no such thing as overload sensors or strain guage technology when it was built..........but it was a combination of stress fractures and operator error.
This was filmed in Seaforth Docks in Liverpool UK over 15 years ago, and is still shown during induction courses for new personel.........NO ONE died, Not even the gantry driver...........but they were VERY VERY lucky.
God Bless these brothers families and pray this never happens again to anyone else's loved ones . Rest in piece - ILWU X111 , Los Angeles - Long Beach Ca.
people were killed in this accident. they were trying to lift a container that was still locked in. every stevedores worst nightmare right there...
this sort of thing is alot more common in the poorer countries were the workers are fatigued more and not as well trained, working for less money etc..

looks like the twistlocks didn't DE on the aft end. ouch. looks fatal.

As a container crane operator who operates that type of crane, it was deffinately operator error without a doubt.
Abuse the equipment and the equipment just might abuse you. I hope those deckhands were uninjured.
88racingfor3 3 years ago
Operators fault!
You always take home the slack before you hoist at full speed, and always follow the deckmans signals

That's what happens when the superintendents ignore the crane mechanics warnings about cracks in the boom.

exactly!!! i hope that dude was alright.
calypso99 3 years ago
@1MeanBean You're a moron, obviously the cone was stuck on the aft end and the operator was trying to hoist anyways.

(2) Plug in and set it on "High"
(3) Wait 5 minutes
(4) Drop trousers
(5) Grab iron
(6) Press firmly onto your crotch front and hold for 30 seconds
