  • ...this song...what the fuck...

  • normally record guitar with a 57 or large condenser toward the edge of the cone point at an angle to the center, a couple inches away. roll of some of the low end maybe add a slight presence boost and some light verb. i find if you need a lot of eq you didnt point your mic right. check out my video for an example of what it sounds like

  • I just headphone out from my guitar amp into my line in for my onboard sound chipset. Sure, it's lo-fi as hell but some people like it that way. If I had the money and an actual band in need of support, I'd consider some recording gear, it gets expensive though.

  • am i the only one that doesnt know how to hook up a pre amp????? been looking everywhere, but NO EFFIN TUTORIALS!!!! do i need a mixer? is there a way to just plug it into my computer directly?? can someone please help me!!!!????

  • good video but hard to concentrate when there is some guy tunelessly wailing in the background!!

  • do i need to record music like the backing track in this video?

  • @tylerkershaw Yes! :-)

  • Never go into the RED! You want your line level at -6 to -12 dB. You'll need the headroom later for when you mix. ...Going into the RED is amateurish.

  • i disliked the video just for the terrible song selection...-__-!!

  • Watch the rasberryyyyyy!!!!

  • lol I dont say this often, but FAIL@video! omg!

Just connect (most amps have this) the "headset"-line out@amp into the "line/mic in"@your laptop/computer, with the proper cable.

Goto the sound options, unmute line in, put the volume up, use ansound editor (google for free 1) and record the "stereo mix or LineIn". Save as WAV (mp3 tends to lower the quality alot even with 320kbps)

The quality isnt good enough for studio/song recording, but its good enough to play around with! Have fun :)

  • @komani86 You dont know what the fuck you are talking about... Check how its done in the studio and than talk ok noob?

  • @procletnic lol calm down bruh srs.

The title says "record your guitar AT HOME". I know how its done in studios, but AT HOME for the GENERAL public, its not done this way. Unless you think everyone is rich like a motha.

You could also buy a decent MIC (like 100USD) and record your guitar, instead of this mixing combo thing, which will cost ALOT more then that.

I do know what im talking about.

  • @komani86 That is what I ment - you need a decent mic like the SM58 or SM57 (lot of studios use these although they are cheap), a crappy amp (70Eur), a decent mixer (120EUR) and a decent audio interface (150EUR). With this setup you will sound WAY better than with any low end digital effect pedal or VST distortion.

  • @procletnic Again, count up the prizes = alot of moneys, not everyone has that budget. You could also just get a decent USB mic and record into your laptop with some mixing software :D

Or the crappiest way possible like I said with a 1euro 3.5mm-6.25mm connector and put it in your Line in. But thats just for fun, not to record a guitar part.

But we do agree that the song sucks in the background? :P

  • @komani86 lol yeah, the song really sux xD I agree on that one

  • @komani86 This is the basics of recording in a home studio. That means seriously recording, not messing around.

  • How do you bypass the preamp on the mixer? Just turn the gain down?

  • How not to record......

  • Disliked.

  • SONG IN THE BACKGROUND MAKES THIS VIDEO TOTALLY WORTH THE WATCH!!

  • Sounds simple enough. Now all I need to do is rob a bank.

  • First you take a framing nailer and fire one shot upside your head, then you wrap wire around it and plug the other end in your ear. With one finger up your nose you next blow snot lube into the volume slider and gyrate back and forth, every so often. Subtly. With the volume on ten, just until it clips, you plug your instrument right into the Ethernet port of your computer and the output into an adapter and then into a fully cranked amplifier. Repeat as necessary, while singing.

  • @Eventual420 man, that was hilarious!

  • If the guy who did this video did the production for the song in the background, then I'm not taking any tips from him

  • needs more cowbell

  • can someone please help me out!! i have both a mixer and a pre amp but i dont know what the pre amp is used for and how to work the pre amp and mixer together. can anyone explain please??

  • nice 'home' setup

  • WATCH THE RASPBERRRRRY!!!!! ffs, this song is awful!

  • Watch the raspberry!? WTF!

  • what is the common method for recording yourself play guitar on youtube, i want he audio and video to match and am miking the amp w. sm57, i have imac w. garageband or boss br-600 to record on. i don't know if i should try to record the audio and video separately,, i mean i can record myself on iMovie and plug direct in but the audio is awful,, how do i sync audio and video more competently??

  • Nick, you need to Audioswap the track on this vid lol - great that you've uploaded the helpful video, but I'm sorry, those vocals are distractingly off :\

  • This is great, but what do I record onto? Directly to a computer or a cd disc in a mixing desk or something? Also, couldn't you just take a line out from the amp directly into a mixing deck without miking up the amp?

  • why do wanna mic an amp? .. that's just stupid .. u can just connect the rec. output on ur amp and the line in for ur comp .. record .. mix it using software .. why the hell do you wanna do all this crap ..

  • @rhn94 that is the proper way to get the worse guitar tone in history. (been there. Tried that.. ONCE)

  • @REALCougarsRmales maybe its your guitar or amp?

  • @rhn94 its called QUALITY,

  • @adrher1 it sounds pretty ggood.. not as good as this method but still good ..

if on a scale of one 2 ten, direct recording is 7 and this is 10 .. ppl don't have soo much money specially in this economy ..

  • Do you have to put a mic on you cabinet when you record?

Do you need the right pickups to record?

And also how do you connect your guitar to your computer with th home studio?

  • The song in the beginning is from your group? Because it sucks a lot.

  • i plug my guitar amp into the mic in and it like blows up the sound card

  • im sorry, but.... WHO has this equipaments at HOME?

  • @mugrespan No need to apologise. Being hungry ain't no crime.

  • @nickeax

    Cheeky monkey.

mugrespan is not saying he/she is hungry, but that this video is slightly misleading in that one could very easily presume that you will be speaking about equipment that most, or even *some* musicians have easy access to.

  • @nickeax I just lol`ed really hard at ur comment! :)

Would you say that it`s generally better to record an amp with a mic, using a high-quality mic preamp like your Great River over there? Is there dramatic sound improvement? I`m currently recording through my audio interface preamp and thinking about whether it is sound(no pun intended) to buy a preamp for recording guitar. I record vocals as well, so I`m getting one eventually, but I was just wondering guitar-sound-wise-is it REALLY good?

  • @mugrespan you can buy a 2 channel mixer for 50 $

  • @mugrespan People who are interested in recording and have jobs. Like myself.

  • @mugrespan

    plenty of people.

    lol

  • @mugrespan ive got it:D

  • @mugrespan Actually, with the way that prices have changed, you can get a legit home recording studio set-up for around 2 grand (without a computer mixed in there), so basically anyone who knows how to save money can have equipment like this at home.

  • @mugrespan my uncle, but........his name is chuck norris

  • Do i need to amp in order to connect electric guitar or bass guitar to the computer ?

  • @realjuvelive Firstly, if you plug your guitar directly into your sound card and it makes sound that you can record, that's better than nothing right? The problem is, your guitar (with passive pickups) will not output the correct type of signal for the input on your sound card. To remedy this, you can use a direct injection box (DI Box) or use some type of 'preamp'. The outputs of the DI and/or the preamp will plug into the 'line in' on your sound card.

  • @nickeax so active pickups would be better for direct sound card recording?

  • @darkeagle551 I'm no expert but I don't think active pickups would be impedance matched to a line level input. I would still recommend a 'direct box'. Assuming you wish to use amp modeling software, that would be a good setup.

  • @nickeax Hi I would be really greatfull if you would answer this question. Im recording at home and i am having problems with the amp hum i get during close micing. Its not loud in real life but close micing picks it up. Ive been using a shitty mic but im just wondering how you get such perfect recordings without any amp hum at all. Im getting an sm57 soon will this help at all?

    Thanks

  • @jwalsh8 The hum isn't produced by the mic as I'm sure you know, so changing mics will do nothing to stop the hum. The hum is generated in your pickups from either lights, or something else plugged into the same powerboard as your amp. You could try shielding your guitar electronics and plugging your amp into its own outlet. Also, you can use a noise gate, either a real one straight after your guitar, or later on in your recording software. You can't hear the hum when the guitar is playing.

  • @darkeagle551 are better because they have more signal level, but it still is low to record properly.

  • @realjuvelive Get a UX2 it can emulate most amps out there when connected to your computer. I use it with Riffworks you can hear how this rig sounds by going to my youTube channel and listening to the music behind most of the videos that arent live. Or I also have a few of the songs I recorded with others online using just the ux2 and a computer at music dot danspec dot com . I dont work for Riffworks but you can make some dam good home recordings with it and a UX2.

  • @realjuvelive Doing that will allow you to apply setting to your guitar. Depending on what program you're using you can download presets to apply to what you recorded.

  • you need to practice singing

  • @screw66 Yes, you are correct. You are correct for everybody too. :)

  • Damn that mix at the beginning sounds NICE. Is that you my man?

  • @Notespompon Thanks yeah!

  • Can I tell you something, your video shows the yamaha mixer at minus in the pre amp. so you are effectively making the first pre amp work overtime, or rather, needlessly cutting the signal so it will need additional boosting later on in the mastering process. You may have just done this to make the demonstration a bit clearer however, seeing as if you said"set it at 0" but then were seen to only set it at 10 oclock it may confuse some...

  • MORE COWBELL!

  • watch the raspberry

  • She's a raspberry?

  • what is the brand of your digital mixer/recorder...the grey one?

  • That's a Tascam 2488.

  • booring fuck...

  • I'll try and eliminate that from future vids! :)

  • @sdowling: I didn't know FREE audio engineering programs were supposed to be designed to entertain you. And here I am, thankful this video was even created.

  • very entertaining accent!

  • I work hard on it.

  • There's a more easier way, but this is really worth to look at with a lager budget

  • How about recording the sound properly for this video?

  • lol

  • It's trying to explain some basic information about audio equipment. I hope it was helpful to you.

    Cheers! :)

  • Jesus christ that singing was out of tune.

  • Well Jesus didn't have autotune back then, give him a break!

  • Amen to that :D

    did you that record that?

  • Yes, and if nothing else, it shows that even talentless idiots may enjoy the pleasures of making music at home. :)

  • Yeah, totally true there dues :P

  • Sounds a little like Bob Mould...cool indie rock. ;)

At least you're not singing about raspberry berets. LOL

  • WATCH THE RASPBERRYYY

  • i know it was Mark Hoppus what song is that ?

  • It's a song I wrote and recorded by myself.

  • The rasberry the rasberry the rasberry

  • Comment removed

  • @blowoffsorrow

WATCH the Rasberry BLEED!!!! The Rasberry!!! Rasberry!!!! haha

  • to bad i don't have does things at home

  • Turn that song off in the background. Christ almighty

  • @birdy2foot lmfao

  • DAM the dude in the background Sound like some doodoo

  • can u adjust the guitar track using the mixer EQ after it has been recorded.?

  • Google search for 'Tweakz Guide'. This stupid thing won't let me post the URL...

  • basic?? xD

  • why are u connected to that analog mixer first and then to your other digital mixer..??

  • The digital mixer is also the recorder. It has a hard dick built in. I am using the 'better' preamps of the mixer and have the preamps of the recorder turned all the way down.

  • Freudian slip?

  • haha hard dick??

  • hahahaha xD

  • the signer in the backround kinda sounds like Mark Hoppus from blink

  • That's a HORRIBLE thing to say about Mark Hoppus! :)

  • HAHAHA

  • so thats how you put a mic in front of a speaker....

  • Yes, but take it slow mate. This stuff is quite complicated.

  • ok, so i have a question, can i not just mic the amp and that be it? i have to get a preamp? all my distortion/effects etc. is on my pedal board and amp so if i could just record straight to the computer without the extra stuff that would be great. sorry if this is a stupid question. im very new to recording and i know absolutly nothing about it

  • for basics, you will need a mixer cus you cant plug the SM-57 in this video or any mic right into the pc without it sounding bad.

i would just get a mixer, and plug the mic in there then use a phono to mini jack cable into the line in of the pc. (thats how i used to do it, then used ASIO4ALL through cubase) or you could get a interface to plug the phonos in to, like a M-audio Audiophile 2496 or a cheap Behringer USB interface.

    hope this helps.

  • Nooooooooo! :P

I don't mean to be rude, but I wish someone told me: no one should record music they've put effort into through their soundcard's microphone/line-in jack. EVER.

My opinion: if you want to record music, get a USB or FireWire (the latter is preferable) audio interface. Period.

Get a mixer for live sound or for compressing multiple tracks (drums) down to one or two (not recommended). The alternative is to spend a bit more and get a multi-input AI. Your music will thank you. :)

  • I've always uploaded my videos to youtube by recording the sound from the line-in jack =O Quality isn't that bad?..

  • @UndisclosedGuitarGuy Well YouTube is fine, but I wouldn't record standalone audio with a sound-card's line-in jack. Just my opinion.

  • @rootvalue I'm going to have to disagree. I have gotten some very good sounding line in tunes now and again

  • @PacManiac12 Well, 'good' is totally subjective, man! :) I would completely agree that my early recordings sounded great to me. I am just implying that a piece of art that you put your heart into deserves something that sounds good to everyone. The composition aside, there is a lot of dynamic range truncated with standard sound cards, and to be honest, if our music was our children, then I would support letting them be spoiled in luxury!

I admire that you're about the music, not the quality. :)

  • so what was this video about?

  • Only time will tell and TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!

  • the song is horrible ...

  • :`(

  • please don't cry, it is just my opinion :D

  • But I'm sensitive about these things!

  • i forgot to say that i like your video... do you feel better know? :)

  • It will take me some time to recover, I'm a sensitive person.

  • okay, so let's start to record ... ergh, i mean RECOVER !!!

  • this guy like his zoom

  • I just got it!

  • what song is that playing in the background?

    watch the raspberry?

  • The song is called "Raspberry Turnstiles" by Luxxy Daizy.

  • Ive got a E-Mu 0202 for recording, does that count as a pre amp? I have a Audio Technica Vocal mic and a Shure Beta 57 and I find my recordings sound pretty bad. Will a better pre amp make a significant difference?

  • Yes, that does count as a preamp as one is built into the card. Not a bad one either, along with excellent converters! (I have the 1620m).

Go to my website for detailed information about recording and mixing.

guitaraustralia . com Look under the forums.

  • If someone is looking for a cheaper and simpler way to record guitar without practically buying a studio, i would definitely reccomend a VOX JamVox, you get really good quality recording and technology for the price you pay.

  • aight i have a marshal with a 6505 head and a sm57 mic. plus im a noob. someone help?

  • That's what I was trying to do with this video. :-)

Maybe the tutorials for home studios on my guitaraustralia . com site will help? They are very detailed. (look in the forums section)

  • you bought a 6505 and a marshall... you aren't a noob...

  • bahahaha.... u never know

  • i wish i had that setup when i was a noob. actually i wish i had it now, lol

  • more than likely need a Audio Interface and a Preamp.. look into those

  • Ha ha, I agree!

  • Thats a Greatriver ME1nv preamp on that speaker..I love that pre...OH YA...FL sucks.Fake ass loop ass music,,ugrgghhh

  • You are right.

  • fl studio is a good software to begainers but if you want perfect results an a hq audio use ableton an cubase niksun76

  • Can you plug the preamp directly in the mixer to plug in many intruments with this effect?

  • A preamp is not an effect. It's an amp.

  • so don't you think i can use it for many instruments?? couldn't it be a "post-mixer" so I can do: instruments then mixer then preamp then amp??

  • It can be done, but I'm not sure it'll sound as good as you think. Do some research into 'gain staging' and 'line' and 'mic' level signals.

  • Thank you very much nickeax! I'll do it..and if it works I think I'll save a lot of money!!

  • i use FL Studio for my recordings and it's ok for me

  • you vid suck balls.

  • the vocals on that song are horrible autotune please

  • yes, you teach us how to record our guitars at home

    with professional recording gear...?

  • I don't mention which brands you should buy. Any mixer, or any audio interface, or any preamp will do. Relax...

  • What bullshit is this! You can use a) preamp b) mixers gain button. Plz. You are totally forgetting sidestrips and compression. You also are lacking when it comes to the eq setup. Then you don't say a sigle word of aspect ratios and so on.. Geeh, no wonder the world is full of crappy guitar sounds.

  • by sidestrip i mean channelstrip ;D

  • This short video will show you the very basics of recording in the home studio. For more guitar related free lessons and tips, visit:

    h t t p : / / w w w . guitaraustralia . c o m

  • dont worry brother i cant sing for crap..the instruments sound good

  • this should be called "how to record your guitar at home with an extremely high budget..."

  • The gear isn't important. This video is a guide to the principles involved. I am not going to rush out and buy different gear, just to make a video.

  • exactly my point.....this video doesn't really help anyone because you need a lot of expensive equipment....

  • You can spend whatever you like.

  • consider that no matter how good the guitar sounds..the vocals and lyrics are going to destroy it...watch the rasberry my friends..watch the rasbeeeery

  • I think I know what you mean!

  • Can I record directly to the portastudio or do you highly recommend mic to mixer to portastudio? Thanks.

  • Depends which preamps you like the best of the two.

  • LOL not being funny or anything but the song's cracking me up all the way man LOL

  • me too haha

  • I put a lot of work into that song! *cries*

  • i love it its funny! XD

  • Ha ha, thanks mate. :-)

  • i like it. its pretty good. but sometimes makes me crack up

  • if i would be using a mixer do u know how i would connect it to pc?

  • It's not something that is worth discussing here. I recommend you visit studio-centralDOTcom for some of the best home studio guides on the net.

Connection a mixer to your computer is covered in depth.

Good luck and email me if you still need some advice. (nickeax at gmail)

  • use a digital mixer or a soundcard.

  • yeah, you'd need an audio interface which can connect via USB, you'll want enough channels on your interface that you have on your desk

  • the thunder is loud but the raindrops is none.

  • hey i have a question how are you connecting your mixer to your computer to get the best sound
