The pressure relief valve on mine stops at about the 10:00 position and seems like if I try to move it anymore would strip it out. It is similar to the one you show here in this video. It has the same amount of threads as the old one. What would cause this? How come I can't tighten this to the 6:00 position?
@vastjosie You may have striped it out. I hope not. If so you will need another relieve valve. Pull it back out and look at the threads. also try re-installing it. good luck.
@Xx1BIGG4xX That Valve is gone bad or you may need a expention tank install on the cold inlet side your getting to much water pressure from water being to hot or high pressure from the house main. try the cheapest thing first replace the valve.
@rmcdaniel423 Lol That's job is about 900 miles away now. I think there going to be OK this was at my brothers house in his basement. His to cheap to have me come back LOL. Thanks
@plumberx No, you don't have to go back! I wasn't clear, I guess. I was watching near the end and it was just a little crooked, and it looked like you were done, so I was all screaming at the computer, then in the last few seconds you fixed it, putting me in my place. LOL
Hey - I wanted to say thanks a lot. I watched your video, then went to Lowes and got the valve and big pipe wrench, replaced it in about 5 minutes! Thanks man!
@dibbers in my kitchen sink, water is flowing fine except for the hot water, hot water works just fine in the bathroom what do you think is the problem?
@thehardcorenoobs1234 - I'm new at this, I just watched this video to learn how to replace the relief valve, have no idea what your problem could be. Sorry.
Actually, I just went to test it and yucky brown water came out at first and now it's at a slow drip. I'm just going to shut off the water and replace the valve. Thanks!
What a great video. I didn't know it was that easy to do. I have some water on the floor the pressure relief valve, it's not constantly coming out. But every few days a small area is damp under the copper pipe, maybe about a dixie cups worth of water. The end of the copper pipe is also very green with mineral build up (we have hard water). The tank is 9 years old. Is that just normal?
Is the "water heater relief valve" the same as "Boiler drain"? This is were I have my leak and think I should have it replaced like in your video. Thanks.
@ateschner No Only when the temperature or pressure goes over and exceeds what’s on the T/P Valve label. If it is going off then there may be a problem with the T/P Valve it's self, the temperature of the water amy be to hot (This happens a lot on Electric water heater) Or you have to much water pressure coming into the home and in that case you would need an expansion tank added to the side of the water heater on the cold side. Thank you for the comment. This will help some one els
@slones8 Yea it's a bad thing. Your wasting hot water and water. Your going to get a high water bill as well as a high gas bill. Not to mention mold. Good luck my freind
@Scotteboy1000 DANGER! DANGER!!!!!! No! No! You don't want to plug this, This is a safty device in case your water heater over heats if there's no were for the pressure to go, your water heater will blow like a missle please do not plug this area please. I Don't know if your joking BUT PLEASE AGAIN DO NOT PLUGS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hello, i have just installed a new 40 gallon natural gas water heater and i noticed yesterday that the pressure release valve had opened after my wife took her morning shower. then later after my shower i checked and it had opened again. could it be defective? did i do something wrong? have i got the temp to hot? please help
@biloxigeo44 Some time it does depend on were you live. Some Areas you need an expansion tank to relieve some of the pressure. This sounds like this may be your case. Check with you local water company they may have upgraded the system increase the pressure to the community and they could give you more information. The reason the old one didn't blow off is probably because of the calcium built up on the inside the relieve valve holding stuck.
@biloxigeo44 follow I really don’t believe its to hot. It its new it has another safety devise that will cut off the water heater before it gets to hot. Good luck. And thank you for the comment. This may help some one ells.
Awesome info on these vids! My electric water tank is producing EXTEMELY hot water. The reset button keeps popping. Does it sound like this is the problem?
@cheetawolf Yes pvc is a bad Idea for the relief valve. But CPVC is alound is some areas. Me I like copper . ( PVC is for cold water and CPVC is for hot water use ) Thanks for asking.
How can I stop my water heater from blowing out excess hot water? It will flood my kitchen and I don't know what to do or even how to fix it. Send me a message about this comment or direct me to a video that can help PLEASE!!
@Franz91124 depending on were you Live you may need an expansion tank, if you have to much water pressure coming into the home this could cause the overflow problem or it just may be that you need a new relief valve. Check with your water company they can tell you more about the expansion tank and if you need it. Good Luck.
Great video! Read somewhere else though that you should use the plumber's tape on the threads and not the brush on liquid kind. Not sure if that is true or if it matters either way.
@Sugarglider1 When a relief valve starts to go bad it will let the water run out of the tank and you can't stop the water from dripping or running. Unless you replace it or reduce the water pressure to the tank. Thank you for the comment.
Thanks for the video man, I let mine run water through it a few days ago, like the yearly thing or whatever to make sure it works, well it didnt want to stop dripping water, tried to mess with it, then woke up this morning to water in my basement...hooray.
But thanks again man...just saved me having to calll a plumber and get reamed
Just replaced mine, easy as pie. Nothing a homeowner couldn't do if they tried and knew what they were doing, (I have some experience in plumbing though)
t@ps dont leak for no reason did you check incoming water pressure and install exspansion tank per manufactor just lost extra money in your pocket ,you replaced thepart that was bad but didnt fix the reason it was leaking
You should make eveyone aware how important it is to release the pressure from the tank before removing the t&p valve. With pressure in the tank the valve will shoot out like a bullet after unscrewing from the tank.
@deviousMonk Turn the water off to the water heater, turn the power off (gas or electric), open the valve on the t&p, then open a hot water faucet that is inside the house, maybe let the water heater cool down for a few minutes also.
Check to make sure the burner is off. The release the valve. Have one person do this and turn on every hot water faucet you can think of.....this will make the water heater drain faster. Make sure the cold suply is all the way off.
got the sob fixed. still should put on a die electric union but my pipe are so old what would be the point. the house I just bought built in 1906 scary. could be lots of head aches Now I need to get this old furnace running missing thermastat and maybe needs rewired
I have a valve thats all corroded and fused by rust I have tryed to get it off with a cresent wrence but it started caving in so I gave up and decided that when it goes it goes. I tryed heating the sides up with a propane torch but can't get it to budge any tips or secrets how to unseize this Damn thing
Very helpful. Thanks! I would not have undertaken this without the video but now I know it is pretty easy. In my case, it turned out that the pressure reduction valve was actually bad. I had 155 pounds of pressure coming in! I bought a new PRV at Home Depot for $31 and replaced that too. It's fine now.
The dip tub inside the water heater has broken off. The dip tub is on the cold side of the hot water heater. it takes the cold water strait to the bottom of the water heater so that it does not mix with the hot water at the top of the tank. when the dip tub breaks off it alows the could to start mixing with the hot water right away giving you less hot water.
how big is your cylinder feeding the shower, also is your hot feed to the shower feed through a tempering valve or is it direct feed from the cylinder?.
do you have to shut every thing down and drain the water before you can change the valve or is there another way, my drain valve is sometimes dripping and other times it has a steady flow i think tha was coz my wife had it at amost very hot that may have caused it to have a steady flow at the pressure reliese valve. Please get back
Yes Cooling the tank will relieve any thermal expansion, but this would not make the valve hard to remove. Make sure that the water to the tank is off, then relieve pressure from the relief valve befor removing. Have the new Relief valve ready to replace right away. The bigger the pipe wrench the easer it will be. Good luck.
i was wondering if you could help me out. I also have a leking water heater, but it seems like the relief valve is plastic. i was wondering if you can replace those just like a copper one.
By any chance, do you mean drain valve? I have never seen a plastic relief valve. The only relief valves that I have seen as always been made of brass. Now the drain valve down at the bottom of the water heater are some times made of plastic. If this is the case yes you can replace them. like brass one's.
well thanks for the reply i took it off n there was a lot of rust build up n when i released the relief valve it didnt stop so i bought a new one for 6bucks n now its not leaking thanks for the help
Some times yes, but if you open the release valve for a moment and clear out any debris that may be stuck in the valve some times that is all that is needed. If this does not work. You may have to much water pressure coming into the house. If this is the case you may need a expansion tank.
Very little. If you have the cut off valve at the water heater turned off. And do not open any faucets in the house. Any faucet that is open will allow air to get in, and make the water come out faster much faster this is not want you want. if your going to change the relief valve with out emptying the tank.
This is a very good video demonstrating something that I have to do. Thank you for sparing me having to go to Home Depot or other store and looking like a "stupid girl." It is so much better to look like a "stupid girl" in the privacy of my own home:)
Thank you very much. And there is nothing stupid about asking a good question. Stupid people do not exist. There are just only people that just don't know.
In the first 30 seconds of this video, you remove a nozzle but very little water came out of the heater. Is that because this is the top of the heater or did you have to turn off water so none would come out for this procedure? Why was there no water shooting out from this opening?
Yes you're right. I do have the water shut off valve to the water heater off. This keeps the air from getting into the tank, and you know with out the air venting the water will come out very slow allowing you to replace the T&P valve with out getting water every were. and not having to drain the tank.
Yes your right. Six inches for the floor. To prevent any one from getting burn. Cut the pipe to high it can splash out on some one. to low it will splash up on some one and they can get burn very badly.
In most states you can not use, PVC for a relief valve discharge. One the water just may be to hot and pop the PVC pipe, and some one could get badly burn. Copper is the best way to go. Good luck.
is it normal for the release valve to be hot? we just changed it since it was leaking

Yes you're right. I do have the water shut off valve to the water heater off.
