Go Mark! I support this guy so much because he is sound and reasoned. Legalists don't know which battles to fight. You really don't. You won't join your school board to keep evil out of classrooms, but you'll pick fights about whether Christian married couples should have oral sex, or whether Christians should drink period. Its YOUR children who engage in excesses. They keep it secret from you, and they don't listen to you at times they SHOULD, because you cry wolf when you SHOULDN'T.
The reason drunkenness is a sin is because we must always have a sound mind to do our job, which is to spread the gospel. If it's inhibiting you from sharing Jesus, then you probably shouldn't do it. God wouldn't approve.
LOL you Christian legalists are so funny, you can drink as long as you don't get drunk?? lol, what's the point of drinking? I get drunk off of half a beer but thank god I'm not a legalist! How miserable it must be to be bound by sin vs non sin.
Was the wine Jesus made an intoxicant? If you look at John 2, Jesus made 120+ gallons of wine.
When it was served to the master of the feast, he compared it to good wine, that should have been set out first.... the first wine was set out and drank until the men were "Well drunken" then the cheap wine was drank...
Both the Strong's and the Thayer's lexicon defines the Greek word for drunken -"METHUO"-as intoxicated..
Can we not assume that the "Good wine made by Jesus, which the governor of the feast said should have been set out first, was good because it was intoxicating? I personally think that it is shown in the verses...
Jesus made 120+ gallons of Wine....Party on Dudes....Just don't drink and climb on a camel.... or whatever they were riding back then...
Ok - This is the first time I disagree with Pastor Mark. I'm sorry to say that. I don't believe it is EVER right to drink alcohol. When Pastor Mark said that John drank alcohol, how does he know if it was fermented or non-fermented? Besides, where is the boundary line between soberness and drunkenness? There is no definite line, but you're approaching the line (or sin) the moment you take your first sip of alcohol or wine. Aren't we to flee sin... not walk up and approach near it?
But again, my friend, it may have been fermented or non-fermented wine/alcohol that Jesus made. We do not know for sure. Pastor Mark may be right & I may be wrong. I just think it's safer to stay away from wine/alcohol all together since too much of it is a sin & there's no definite line to when it's a sin. Drunkenness begins (although not its entirety) right after the first sip. Again, this is my personal conviction & actually what my church believes, too. So I'm just going to put it out there.
Why do you say that drunkenness begins at the first sip? If your conviction and what your church actually believes is false, are we not obliged, as Christian brethren, to correct mistaken beliefs? I strongly disagree with your statement that drunkenness begins right after the first sip. As a drinker of wine myself, I can attest that I never got drunk even with my third cup, although it should be noted that some are less tolerant than others.
well, we know the drink was in fact fermented because they used the word wine to describe it...just a guess. but what i got from your comment was basically stating that even if it is a minuscule sip, and since you dont believe in the boundaries of soberness and drunkeness, that sip is sin. which you will find no where in the bible, but where you will find it is in the Koran.
not at all....what im saying is that if we begin to call an object sin we step outside of the biblical teaching of sin being the abuse and corruption of a thing, and step into what the muslims believe(im not calling him/her a muslim...) that objects like alcohol ARE sin.
And im totally not arguing with his personal conviction on alcohol, im just clearing up a view on sin.
@OneAvidity Question, why did Jesus not condemn his apostles for drinking wine at dinner? Why did Jesus drink wine at the Last Supper? Isn't lust a sin? Why not avoid contact with all women, except your wife?
@OneAvidity ...I've never heard of "unfermented wine." It sounds like a crock. That would be grape juice. When I look it up, I see exclusively biblical debates, but no secular. How does one get drunk on unfermented wine? I'm not trying to be obnoxious, this just sounds like splitting hairs to be legalistic rather than simply take 1 Corinthians 6: 12-13 at its word. Bondage is a sin, and if you are a slave to alcohol, don't drink. If you're not. keep it in moderation and don't toe the line.
@djking2d Yeah, the fermented/unfermented wine is tricky, but it has to do with the two different words for wine in hebrew, one meaning "wine" (as you and I know it), the other grapejuice. God approves the drinking of both, as long as you dont get drunk off the fermented one, obviously you cant get drunk off grapejuice. The wine Jesus made from whater was the fermented kind. He himself (probably) drank some.I understand the confusion cuz English has a lot less words than the Hebrew language:)
So, body shots... good, bad?

Adiaphora. We are free to drink and NOT to drink. It is our choice. If it offends some people, you are free to not drink in their presence. etc
