Metal is actually pretty relaxed. You can dress however you want. My first band were long haired and influenced by heavier late 80's/early 90's stuff but we dressed all in colored shirts and normal jeans to try to give it a weird proggy psychedelic thing, I guess.

As someone who got into metal back in the '80s, I went through that whole trip of the denim jacket with patches and pins, the metal shirts, tight jeans, also had a leather jacket, etc.. It was fun stuff for a young guy back then. I'm now an older guy with short hair who has outgrown the "metal dress code," but I still love the music. I would feel ridiculous dressed all "metal" nowadays...it's not as if I play in a band...lol
