The F4U had the biggest kill ratio of any WW2 plane but saw service with marine squadrons but the mustang did only long range at the beginning - more Mustangs lost later when they on ground targets he P40 was made in greater numbers F4U did not operate till late from carriers but the Hellcat was then in use Strange to tell but they modded a Mustang with a hook and did carrier trilas but the inline engine made ditching difficult. The pilots notes for the Mustang recommends "Do Not Ditch".
Although this comment is a year old, I will have to point out that you are in error.
-The F4U `Hellcat´ did not in fact have the best kill-to-loss ratio.
Also, U.S. people who claim that, also usually ignore the fact that their beloved P-51`Mustang´ was not a very good high-altitude escort, but was meant to be used in ground support. This was because of the poor performance of her Allison engine.
-Only when British Merlin engine was installed, the Mustang became the legend.
I do not know of anyone promoting this show in the USA, but try a google search on Classic Fighters Marlborough, or Warbirds Over Wanaka, and you should find sights for these shows.
This show was at Omaka Airfeild near Blenheim, New Zealand. The next big show here is not due until Easter weekend 2009. These planes and more will probably be in the Warbirds over Wanaka Airshow, at Wanaka New Zealand Easter weekend 2008. They are wonderful aircraft and excellent displays, but there is so much more available in the USA, UK and Europe.
the p51d was rated the best fighter on the millitary channel. the sopwith, phantom, spitfire, sabre and f15 were in the ranks. love all the warbirds and the men that flew them.
Propably the best fighter among those. Compare it to bf109 of the same era or the fw190, or even the russian LA-5 and onwards, it doesn't stand a chance.
corsair is the best.

I would take the F4U Corsair or even the p-47 in combat over any other plane -41-45.

The P40s flew with the Harvards at one point at the 2007 - they sounded much meaner!

2007 the Yak3 was pretty good, the P40's P51's and Corsair all put on a good show this year. Got more video to upload in next couple of weeks.
