To think that EVH never knew any theory is in my opinion ludicrous. He knew keys, he knew arpeggios.. he knew scales, and chords. He might not have obsessed about the names of them, or the intervals he was plaing but his songs prove that he knew what he was doing.

@ACDC2K10 EVH was a classically trained pianist before he picked up guitar...trust me, he knew some f'n theory :) I imagine once he picked up guitar he let his fingers find everything without much thought because it was a new instrument for him, but deep down he still had grounding in theory for sure. As they say; learn as much as you can..then forget it and play from the heart.

they sound alike because satch was using modded xxx's at the time so they would sound more like a jsx, also it is satch playing, he has his own tone, if you got a standard xxx and jsx and put them side by side, they're quite different sounding amps
