It would have been a great loss to humanity to have lost the Japanese people and culture. Yes, they got out of control in the first half of the 20th century but this was hardly disproportionate with the European expansions of the previous 400 years.

Prostitution, violence and noise pollution from jets are just a few side-effects of the military presence. A local girl was raped just before our visit. As a result, all American soldiers were placed on strict curfew. Under these circumstances it could be understandable why the Okinawans would like the base removed.

There are 9 conditions listed in the The Potsdam Declaration.
# 3, "Japanese sovereignty shall be limited to the islands of Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū, Shikoku and such minor islands as we determine."
