All katas are not goju ryu katas, there is a part of the film that Taikan(Tatsuya Naka) is doing the kata meikyo(shotokan kata)0:54 - 1:12 ,there is katas from goju ryu too,but not only goju ryu,i think there is another styles of kata there,a wado ryu kata i think,i know there is a kihon in this film who is much used by the wado-ryu style,0:06 - 0:32,i dunno if that kihon is used by another style, but i already have seen they doing, hope i ve helped ^^
I liked this movie. you can buy this movie in amazon or rent it in netflix. those are the two places I've seen it..no la he visto con subtitulos en espanol. Me gusto mucho.
que pena q o audio esta em japones. ja tenho o filme uns 4 meses e ainda nao consegui um q seja dublado. mas sem duvida é um filme muito bom q dá pra tirar um bom proveito. Oss.
In the main cast, the role of Giryu is played by AKIHITO YAGI (Fifth Dan), instructor in International Meibukan Goju Ryu Karate. The role of Taikan is played by TATSUYA NAKA (Sixth Dan), instructor at the Japan Karate Association General Headquarters (Corp.), and Choei is played by YUJI SUZUKI, an actor who holds the rank of First Dan.
BTW the movie is now available with either german or english subtitles.
The Karatestyle in this Karatemovie is to 90%Shotokan, because the producer find it the best Karatestyle for his movie. I know it, because one karateka of our karateclub made an interview with Naka Sensei. So he said, that the producer, Nishi-Sensei, came to a training to Naka-Sensei and he found that it was the best training he ever had it for his movie kuro-obi. That was a training in the Honbu Dojo (-> JKA),but he also had trainings with other karatestyles.
this is goju ryu. All katas in this movie was goju ryu katas. the role of Giryu is played by AKIHITO YAGI (Fifth Dan), instructor in International Meibukan Goju Ryu Karate. The role of Taikan is played by TATSUYA NAKA (Sixth Dan), instructor at the Japan Karate Association General Headquarters (Corp.), and Choei is played by YUJI SUZUKI, an actor who holds the rank of First Dan. So this is not kyokushin or shotokan. Yes, all karate styles have some similarities.
Hi Kavolis, The overall fighting style and training style (ibuki, sanchin) is Shorei- Ryu. BUT: In this trailer you can see the Shotokan Kata Meikyo (Yes it is the shotokan version, not its root Rohai). See Minute 1:05-1:12. I appreciate very much that this movie clearly shows and points out what karate was when it was a JUTSU, not a sport.
OK, i agree, the movie is about traditional karate. I agree also about meikyo. But sanshin (the first kata in the movie), tensho (Giryu's kata by the waterfall - originated from goju ryu also)... is what you can see in any goju ryu dojo in exactly the same maneer, with all that loud breathing etc... And yes, Taikan's fighting tactics and style is clearly from shotokan. Anyway, IMHO this is one of the greatest movies about karate ;)
@kavolis Taikan (Tatsuya Naka Sensei) is Shotokan, not Goju Ryu. The actor is an instructor at the JKA HQ in Tokyo which practices Shotokan. Yagi Sensei is Goju, I'll give you that.
@kavolis But there are other martial artists, from other styles like Kyokushin Karate and even Tae kwon do, in this movie. The making of shows it clearly. One of the guys is using a karate-gi kyokushin style and other is using a do bok while rehearsing for the shootings.
Neither Shotokai nor Shotokan (the JKA variety) are exactly what Funakoshi Sensei taught, and the karate Funakoshi taught as an older man was not exactly what he had learned in Okinawa as a young man. Both Shotokai and Shotokan practice lower and longer stances than Funakoshi Sensei brought to Japan in the early 1920's. Yoshitaka Funakoshi, Gichin Funakoshi's son, with Nakayama Sensei, made changes also.
Im glad they didn't made this movie with a particular Karate style. You can clearly see Shotokan, Goju Ryu, Kyokushin in the moves. Is going to showcase techniques from diferent styles. Its all just KARATE! Great.
The lead actor with the goatee beard moves like shotokan guy; the younger guy who does the mawashigeri-ushiromawashi combo looks like a kyokushinkai guy. The sanchin exercises at the start of the clip are goju but the kata the dude in the field was doing was shotokan. Looks like it's a good mix of karate schools.
I'd have to disagree. Goatee man is clearly shotokan and moves like a shotokan dude but the guy that does the kicking combo is absolutely kyokushinkai. Everything about his movement and stance is kyokushin. It doesn't really matter one way or the other, but I am right :-D
Its about time that a film of this calber has been made. Most importantly is the fact that its real karate-do. The scenes are scripted but the fights scenes have real contact. The blows are real but thats why the actors are real martial artists. I look forward to seeing the film in its entirety.

@Thingolfin I noticed that the three leads' names are a play on their respective styles: Taikan=Shotokan, Giryu=Gojuryu, and Choei=Shoreiryu

@kavolis I disagree with you. In this trailer, “Taikan” executes a JKA Shotokan Kata known as Meikyo.

@cumanagoto agree. My fault. Tatsuya Naka is not goju ryu karateka anyway.
