You could use the same technique, change your hook a bit to the sponge bait holder hooks. It's just a treble hook with a yellow sponge covering the hook, wet the sponge first and stir it a little in the big bite and then push it in.
magic bait or dip baits are horrible ive never caught anything on them. i always use chicken livers covered in garlic powder set out in the sun for 2-3hrs. works great
I actually went out to the river last night using this same product and caught 6 channels cats in about 45 minutes, each over 5 lb except for one, he was 10 lb. Remember that when you use dipbaits, you need to set them in the water for 5-10 seconds after baiting the hook, it activates the scent, it's a lot harder to catch cats if you don't. :-)

i have heard of ppl who have had very good luck with them but magic bait and dip baits like catfish dynamite ive never done any well with

We had a good experience with it,actually used almost half a tub of it 3/4 of that was catches.
