I saw the documentary on this! He was giving up so he took a drug called demerol. His friends kept calling him but he didn't answer so they had to go round to his hotel room and he was passed out on the floor, they convinced him to the grammy's (I think it was) so he did, he wasn't addicted to demerol. He still gave it 110% on his performances, just for his fans. Really sad:(

It's clear to anybody that he was under the influence of some kind of drug here, most probably some sleep inducing one. He doesn't seem as sharp and aware as he usually did, especially in public situations. But people need to understand it wasn't recreational, it was to help the guy sleep. <3 Michael.

Dude I can imagine how he hated touring/having concerts. He only did it for one thing, and that thing was his fans. When people asked him did he like the process of going on touring (or performing live concerts) he said he went through Hell.

@crazy4corbinbleux Yea i heard it too, but you know :/ he always said he loved performing that's where he was most comfortable , on stage. I think when he said he hated touring he meant traveling all over the place and sometimes not having a clue where he was and it was non-stop traveling. Not neccessarly performing because he used to say he would go crazy when he did not perform. :)

@chocoholic961 i'm afraid to say he was under the influence of demerol, he had taken some in his hotel room before the concert and was late coming to it. his eyes were nearly closed in some of the performances, this is all confirmed in the recent documentary "life of an icon" by David Gest. i suggest you watch it

@N1CKLBACK Thank you for your comment--a friend of mine recently told me that story from the documentary. So sad :( People need to realize that saying he was using drugs doesn't mean you're immature or that you love him any less. I love him dearly, and I wish some of those doctors would have said no instead of taking his money and handing him all kinds of meds. People pretending that he didn't have a drug problem is one of the biggest reasons why he's not with us anymore :'(

@N1CKLBACK Yesterday I watched the documentary, and I have to admit, as a longtime MJ admirer and fan, it rings true. David Gest wasn't seeking sensationalism, but seemed to be really conscious of how MJ wanted to be remembered himself. It's a sad part of his life, but his life was so much more than that. In some ways he appeared larger than life, but he was only human, just like you and me.

It's possible he may have been on painkillers. I read he had plastic surgery done not long before this performance and may have not had enough time to heal...hence the need for medication. Rest In peace Michael and Elizabeth, together again in total happiness.

@iconic - Michael had taken a shot of Demerol an hour or 2 before this video was shot. Frank Cascio confirmed this in an interview for "Life of an Icon". I knew MJ was doped up during this show back in 2001. We could all tell. His performance suffered greatly. I can't watch it. It's his worst performance ever. Not up to the usual standard of MJ at all. Such a shame coz many other artists were in the audience that night. He didn't come across good. His top lip is botox'd too much too.
