This is one of my favorite songs. Up there with Baba O'Riley and Let It Be, even! Maybe even... do I dare say it? UPTIGHT BY STEVIE WONDER? YES! TAJ DESERVES IT HE IS AMAZING! love you Taj :) <3
Wow, never heard Taj do this before. Awesome version, and actually the best i"ve ever heard. I'm proud to say i've seen the great Taj in concert, but it's been a long while.
@Appaloosa1969 Not really. This 'standard song' was written by Taj Mahal and his guitarist Jesse Ed Davis back in 1968. Handyman was a 'cover song' for JT that was written by Otis Blackwell and Jimmy Jones in the mid-fifties. Just sayin'. Not trying to be a dickhead.
Mich very nice story. Phish actually does a good cover of this song...it seems to follow me when I see them live, I saw the first 3 versions they did spread out over many years.
My uncle, who is one of my heroes, met Taj Mahal many years ago, which led him to play the harmonica and me to hear this song. When I was a kid my uncle brought a Taj Mahal album to my house and accidently let it . I really did not want to hear the blues, until I fell in love with a girl who broke my heart. I put the album on and I was hooked and been a fan of Taj Mahal for more than 40 years. Great blues man. Love, love , love this song.
navigator, PeluMaad shit I know what you mean! I caught Taj Mahal once in S Cal at some rock bluesy gathering. He was sitting in a tent just playing with his guitar. I never heard anyone who just breathed music like that.
navigator, PeluMaad shit I know what you mean! I caught Taj Mahal once in S Cal at some rock bluesy gathering. He was sitting in a tent just playing with his guitar. I never heard anyone who just breathed music like that.
Great days, great memories. Taj Mahal, Linda Tillery and the Loading Zone, Big Brother and the Holding Co. Some great blues based bands both black and white. Living at that time is the only thing that makes being 67 bearable!
I had just returned from Nam. My brother picked me up in San Diego and went to LA. It was New Years Eve 67-68. Brother was playing rythem with Taj at the Whiskey. Rivers was the headliner. I sat there on stairs from upper floor leading to bandstand, with waitress bringing me screwdrivers and just watching the crown. I was home. Best night of my life.
Being honest I didn't know who he was until m,y wife and I saw him play in Sydney 2 nights ago.... I have had a cpl of his riffs stuck in my head all day ... I said to my wife afterwards that this guy is too cool by half when we left as I have never heard anyone blues music sound as original as his. I'm going to buy up some of his albums and load up my CD player in my car and leave em there for a month lol
First time I saw Taj was in the Big Sur area ack in the mid 70s in a tiny club playing by himself. Listened and loved it but my ride was leaving. Wished I would have known who he was back then I would have hitchhiked out.
Read all these GREAT posts on my darn phone took me forever. I am now on my PC at home,to write this ....I Love this Guy Taj! Have seen him many, many times as I live in the big (S.F.) bay area. Taj is one a the greatests!!! Loved his music 40 years ago, and love it to this day!
Keep it up Taj..you are tops on my list! I thank you Taj for playing your music all around the bay area...... & Thanks for the posting ceeceerider!!
Taj was never given the credit he deserved in my opinion! At least the Stones knew him and gave hima bit of attention in their movie! Taj was as good as the Wicked Pickett or any of those cats in his heyday, which was with THIS lineup who produced at least 4 excellent albums in the 70's! RIP Jesse!
Great track! Love that beat. Damn good artist. A friend in the good old US of A tells me Taj is still goin' strong. Greetings to everyone from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.
I though this man was desperately COOL back in the early years. Chunkin and growling and teezin his songs out. 'Soun like a lemon squeezer... and the rest of the population was listening to the TROGS or Freddy and the Dreamers. He was all alone -just bein cool.
A Sunny Terry type but with the smarts to know what and when to come out with something different.
Always does my heart good. What a talent full of soul. Who can best Corrina. Still a fan after 30 years seeing Taj at The Joyous Lake in Woodstock at age 16. Even named my persian after him
His voice was love at first note for me. There is no musician more versatile than Taj.... none! I can't wait until he comes to the Southeast.... seeing him will truly be a dream come true!
And it got me through my last year of high school ...must have been similar to your boarding school experience... I played this song everyday, all day and I still have the album with all the scratches and cracks in tact -- it's better than a high school yearbook.
The aunt and uncle who are essentially my parents met at a little pub. Taj Majal was playing this song when my Aunt walked in and my uncle laid eyes on her. He says it truly was love at first sight. Because of that, this is my favorite song.
This man is a f*cking national treasure & I am thankful I've seen hin up close several times. It isn't just his incrdible musicianship, but his personality and attitude..Awesome in the true meaning of the word.
TAJ-MAHAL is housed with graves,so whosoever views, visits, talks, write or hears about it; out of reverence / obligation to devotedly offer /pray to ALLAH, for all souls to be in peace & ask blessings & Emaan for mankind; else one have no right over it in any form, to comment, enter its precincts, pollute, impure its air & around. Of course, first & foremost one must purify with niyyah too, so that one evades the curse in turn due; failing to abide by these basic norms.
SlimReefer, yeah this is a real good song to practice lead guitar on. The chord progression is basic blues in A, try using ionian scale in A sounds real good, similar to Allman bros and GrtflDd.
Then when he brings it back in the classic bluesy way its A maj, B maj, E maj, A maj, E maj, D maj, G maj, D maj, back to A maj, its important to know alternative fingerings for chords, like the A maj can be barred for the beginning beats, but on other beats you'll find its easier to play other positions for the chords, ill work on a video for this song, peace!
chord progression is really a basic I IV V aka blues progression (or its most common use in a genre of music). This song is in the key of A and the scale is major, for two reasons the first chord is major and the fourth and fifth are major as well, it could be mixolydian which is a major scale but with a flatted 7th, but thats another post :) But the progressions adds some other chords in their for the feel and groove, Ill just write out the chords in order they are played and just use your ears
He performed this number with The Rolling Stones at their 1997 "Bridges to Babylon" tour. On that version, Taj is featured on Dobro and vocals, while Mick Jagger plays harmonica, with Keith, Charlie and Ronnie all doing their usual duties (guitar and drums respectively).
I also wonder whether or not the Stones have ever attempted to cover his cover of "Yank" Rachell's "She Caught the Katy" (most famously done by the Blues Brothers Band since 1979).
Everybody who took time to comment on this Taj Mahal recording of Corina got thumbs up from me. Got to see Taj Mahal in 1970 in Phila. ((Some years back.)) Just thinking this morning, this song in this way,in the immediate, somehow seems a doorway to a past long before I came along ((That must be the natural blues.))
I thuink I hear a heart beat is in the rhythm. So for once Bob Dylan I set aside for Taj.
