  • i <3 your mustache ;)

  • Thnx !

  • well done freenas should credit you

  • Can you install freenas on a Windows Server 2008 or I need a separate computer?

  • @mssca,

What I mean to ask is what type of VM ware do I need to use to install the VM ware?

  • Hi Chris, Thanks for the detailed video on FreeNAS. Can I install FreeNAS on an existing Windows 7 PC? or do I need a separate PC with just FreeNAS?

    Thanks in advance.

  • @sajivnair78 you can use vmware to install freenas separately but in the same computer.. I tried before, it works..

  • and here is me using 7.10 gutsy gibbon on my newly up and running home file server, happy with my results... Until i see this.....

damn i want to backup my data and install freenas :D

    great vid, thankyou very much

  • i cant install freenas on my usb key because its 4gb and i dont have one smaller :(

also can my old laptop that i want to turn into a freenas . it says in bios boot to usb harddrive. do i select this to boot to freenas on the usb key ? if i can even get freenas on my 4gb usb stick :(

  • can you make a review of the new version 8?

  • WOW! I will use freenas cause this video and replace OS X with Xubuntu as my Main OS

    LOL! You are so cool.

  • can this be installed as a standalone OS? and if it would be a standalone OS, and had movies stored in the old laptop - connected to TV, will I be able to stream videos to the TV? Or would you suggest installing FreeNAS on top of a linux OS, LinuxMint for example. Thanks...

  • nice video !, and i love your mario look. :)

  • how to take out hdds from freenas system and put it into windows 7

  • btw, UpNP works fine under Freebsd 7.3 :-)

  • OMG.. "leave everything set to its default value" that's so IN DEPTH..

anyway FreeNAS is really great solution.

  • Can you connect computers such as macs and pcs via USB3/firewire 800 to the freenas for faster file transfer i.e backups etc or can the freenas be only used through the network?

  • CRAZY COOL AWESOME

  • True fact, Compact flash is actually pin compatible with IDE :)

They are very popular as hard drives on Amiga's.

Has hardware support increased since this video was made?

  • Can I create a RAID (5) volume on the freenas, then Truecrypt the ENTIRE spanned volume? I do not want to create an encrypted container, but encrypt the entire volume making the data contained therein theft-proof. Do-able?

  • i preffer the old version of freenas. it gives less problems

  • I downloaded the Freenas 8 version, and it's completely different. Also, it miss "transmission" tab and other settings... It seems a "stripped down" version. What's the problem??

  • Is it possible to access and download files from a Freenas system via the internet?

  • i went on the site, and it looks completely different! what happened?

  • This is not "IN DEPTH" ... cuz u skipped installing... 90% of ppl wont even get to this step when u begin..

  • IDE to CF link is bad, update and let me know?

  • thanks for sharing this information

  • Nice work

I own a Qnap 219, in the qnap you can create shares and then select wich users may have acces to that share, how does it work in FreeNas ?

I would like to use Freenas as a remote Rsync server.

  • Here's a question for you. Is it possible to organise files on the server without them having to be copied across the network to my PC then back again?

i.e. if I had downloaded a large file (20GB+) with bittorrent onto the server and then wanted to put the file in a different folder on the server, how would I do this?

  • This is a great vid. I've just built my own NAS server using FreeNAS and this is really helpful. Thanks!

  • you missed mounting the drives and sharing the mount points on CIFS/SMB

  • So is windows or mac compatible with reading the journaling file system? UFS?

  • very useful, thank you! I'll post the result, the possibilities are immense. you saved me a lot of time reading, thanks again ;)

  • in this episode: .... MASSIVE audio out of sync !

  • Free NAS

  • how do i create directories from an ftp?

  • trying to fit 32mb on a floppy 1.44mb floppy?

  • @TheIndustrialphreak referring to the config file

  • i know you said it had transmission but can you run miro on there for rss subscription to torrents?

  • nice video chris.. let me know if I can help with a vid because I roll freenas mainly for in-home streaming.. I attached a video earlier of streaming. streaming from freenas to ps3 is great, but it's also able to stream to psp .. freenas is solid, i've tested: WHS, openfiler, and naslite in comparison. the key is APPROVED HARDWARE... don't mess with it, just buy equipment that is compatible.

  • will the itunes server work with movies ???

  • hi there my name is marcus i am trying to put freenas on my old window computer i do every thin u say and it is still not working

ps i do not no what is going on when i remove the cd from the cd drive it is not booting up with freenas

now i did opition 3 from the install menu and then every thing is fine and all but when i do every thing els then reboot there is no file or anything on computer

with out the cd it is not doing any thing please help

  • Does anyone else think this guy look like that pig captain on whale wars ?

  • I'll tell you, I've tried Ubuntu server, Openfiler and several other minimal installation Linux operating systems and none of them can touch a hair on FreeNAS. FreeNAS is so easy to use and configure, it just plain out works! Of course, FreeBSD is just rock solid anyways, so yeah...awesome.

  • oh this is a web server? i thought it's a linux distro.

  • Hey Chris, I really enjoyed that video on Freenas. It is very informative. I have a quick question for you. I have setup one myself. I have tried to mount an usb drive without any luck. I keep getting the following error: root: Error: Failed to mount /dev/da1s1 using EXT2. Can you help? Thanks

  • i just made a completely quiet server for one of my customers.

It runs constantly with one extremely low noise 140mm fan blowing on it.

    (all from newegg)

    1. ZOTAC IONITX-A-U Atom 330 ION M-ITX MOBO/CPU/PSU

    2. PQI 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800

    3. WD Scorpio Blue 640GB 5400 2.5"

It doesn't bite their wallet on maintenance/ electricity and it works great for a server/ htpc/ ... lot's of storage. I think of it as something i should have had months ago.

and, yes it runs FreeNAS on a 8gb flash drive.

  • @bmw2go11

does the hard drive goes inside the ZOTAC? or is it an external drive ?

  • @legatoboy The zotac motherboard goes inside a case/shell bought separately.

Most people call the case as a cpu, or box. But actually its just there to protect the inner components.

The hard drive also goes inside the case with screws; the cables are then attached to the motherboard for data transfer.

If you are not sure how/ what pieces you need for a server/ computer ask a professional or jupiterbroadcasting or even myself.

    I hope you now understand.

  • @bmw2go11 if I want a 2nd drive for mirroring, then I'll need to go with esata?

  • @legatoboy no the motherboard has 3 sata connectors, there is software that can do that all for you.

  • could you please start making IN DEPTH videos again

  • Great review, very helpful!

...still trying to figure out how to acces my files from the internet...

  • @davelogan77 hack yourself xD

  • i think you have got UPnP wrong, I think you are mitaking it with DLNA.

  • About FreeNAS, how can i UP shoutcast server ? how can i install and put it up when i turn on my pc and freenas? thanks

  • thanks dude! LAS for eva! :)

  • You don't take a breath while speaking, its a very bad habit doesn't let your audience breathe either, you should do shorter videos.

  • @SilentDeathShot ya, about that, i wouldn't advise not breathing. It's something everyone needs to do, he just does it in a different way that seems annoying to you. Your comment is just your hate towards a awesome guy making videos on youtube for everyone to watch and learn.

  • i wish freenas could be integrated into ubuntu, so i could have a nas, but also use anything linux! (like SSH vlc to scare my sister, or ripping dvds)

  • There's a project coming out called OpenMediaVault that's based on Debian. It's basically a fork of FreeNAS.

  • i was using FreeNAS on a old laptop, with practicaly all services working, but for some reason it only let me at 7mb out of the 6gb (small i know). my dad had an old mac mini, i couldnt install freenas bcos it was a powerpc, so i turned on the annoyingly simple SMB and AFP in mac os, put it in a draw, and the hard drive failed irrecoverably :S but FreeNAS was great!

  • if the head crashes, which is catastrophic, it might be slightly less catastrophic by lowering the spin speed.

  • i run FreeNAS of a CD, with the config on a floppy, it works quite well on an ANCIENT laptop. with the HDD set to spin down, i can't hear it, until i change the config, and the floppy kicks in. In other words *nothing for 20 mins :)* *clunk clunk zzzzz zzzz grate grate clunk* i could turn it off, but then i would lose 128MB of 6GB, yes i said 6GB

  • you kind of look like chubby john cryer.

  • Freenas is no longer based on freebsd it is currently based on debian. Is this a good thing? well i dont know never used freenas but i love freebsd and i hate the debian distro. But i do like debian based distros such as ubuntu, crunchbang and so on.

  • I have a freeNas

    Intel Atom A330

    2 GB Ram

    D945GCLF2

    Promise S-ATA 300

    4x 1TB Hitachi Deskstar

    EnerMax Modu 85+ 425W

  • What's freeNAZZZZZ? I thought it was freeNASSSSSS?

  • I was going to say that too, but I was trying to find a less crude way of introducing it. FreeNAS with a short S is easier on the ear Chris, and the way you are saying it, NAZzz, is a bit of a trail-off and also closer to slurring the word than being precise. Precision is very-much needed if you want people to understand you better. You're also setting the pronunciation example for others in the same way. I hope I was of help.

  • I gotta say thanks for this video... I've setup FreeNAS on an old IBM Netvista P4 1.8ghz box with 512MB of RAM and for now a few smaller hard drives (2x40GB and 1x120GB). I for the life of me couldn't get the samba service running on FreeNAS... it wasn't until I watched this video that I noticed the little 'enable' tickbox to the far right of the config page. DOH!!!

  • @Noxtek...lol... I had the same issue when I first set it up, but I noticed the Enable checkbox by chance... Once it was enabled, though, it worked like a charm!

  • FYI its not a "torrent server", it's just a client with a webgui

  • yes u can

  • Can i load the whole FreeNas on a USB Stick too? Or can i only save configs on the Stick?

  • You can stick entire freenas on a usb stick and save to it too.

  • Well put brah! Thanks for the help!

  • Very nice video tut. I'm definately convinced what os to use when I recieve my $180 Atom 330 system tomorrow ;) I'm gonna use my 1TB Seagate HDD with it. Later I'm gonna buy a Nvidia ION box to feed my tv with the content I put on my NAS.

  • I've watched your video several times. You made a statement reguarding Bitorrents and remote bitorrent interfaces. I'm running XP and so far I've not found a workimg remote interface. Transmission does not seem to exist for XP at this time. Is there anther approach. Thanks Roger

  • Great job ,helping people such a professional way.I also setting up a freenas server now with a small form factor p3 pc with 650 gb

  • Just a quick question:

Is it possible to run free nas in an ad-hoc network? I just want to stream media to my aspire one. If it is possible will other laptops be able to connect to such network?

  • Thanks for the video, I'm also setting up a server which will run FreeNAS, I have a PCI to IDE Card with 8 IDE Hard drives with a total size of 230GB (the drives are tiny)

  • but can stand by the drive though..whats right eat his cake..lol

  • check out m0n0wall and pfsense which are related to freenas not only because they are freebsd too, but pfsense and freenas originally got their interfaces from m0n0wall

  • "Keep it geeky!" Hah, love it. Video was pretty long but really interesting.

I had freeNAS set up for about a year now and zero problems with it, well apart from one time the web interface wasn't working when I installed new harddrives and I kicked it twice.

It then came up with a bad read error on my 750GB HDD. I prayed and rebooted, thankfully it worked and I will never kick it again!

I have it linked up with XBMC, it really is the most ultimate media center, and its all free!! Amazing.

  • Outstanding Broadcasting!

    You did it first!

  • The effort you put into this is most excellent and thanks for rocking out FreeBSD mentions! :)

  • Great show, really helpful honest exploration of freenas.

  • The version of FreeNAS you are using in the video has horizontal drop down links at the top. I have the latest version and this only has static links to the left side. Are there different versions or have you applied a theme or something?

  • what is the video recordering you are using

  • I like your videos! Keep up the good work!

  • Chris,

Wondering if, on the off chance, you could include links to the products for other countries in your show notes?

It'd be nice to see the things you find in, say GBP.

  • I tried freeNAS on VirtualBox. I couldn't get the network working correctly. It saw an Up interface but I couldn't ping anything but my own IP. I also tried it on a spare computer but it hung on boot up. I guess I was having an unlucky day. I haven't given up yet.

  • Why does it say Bryan and Chris when really it is just Chris?

  • I have a old dell computer that should run this program with no problems. I have a xbox 360 and a existing home network and also a one terabyte external hard drive. Is there any written guide to do this step be step cause i am a newbie to networking :)

  • Also, could you guys possibly have a look at the new english Red Flag distro. I love your episodes, thank you.

  • About the Fedora person wanting a full DVD ISO. Lots of people still have a max 10-20GB/Month ISP limit. OT, sorry, but I like small CD ISO's still over a full blown Fedora built. Also with the small SSD coming out, small kernel's would help^^.

  • why not become an amazon partner?

  • I meant youtube partner as you seem to be after a little ad money, seems easy enough.

  • Ya we are a YouTube partner, we are starting the ads, but it is not very much money at this point. But thankful for what we get!

Plus we also get longer than 10 min videos.

    -Chris

  • How do you get the web interface?

  • You plug the IP address of the FreeNAS box into your browser.

    -Chris

  • Great work man.

Keep the videos coming. Love when you take your time :)

  • Best in-depth so far, nothing but love for Chris when we're getting anywhere near the firewalls ;)

  • "In this episode...[dramatic pause]...of an in depth look" ;)

  • Shatner style!

    -Chris

  • Is there a way of combining Freenas and Monowall?

btw did the fedora promotion fees stop chris :-P? since I don't see your hat.

  • It is based on M0n0wall, and has pf filter built in (the firewall software) so I bet there would be way to get it to do what you are looking for.

    -Chris

  • Exactly, now I can kick out my old noisy server.

    Cheers

  • Your hints are very useful! Great work, keep it going!

  • your videos have made my life so so so much easier and fun thank you! i tell everyone about you man your awesome!

  • Will free nas support multiple network cards.

I dont have a router but i got some network cards for 2$.

  • yes it will

    -Chris

  • @jupiterbroadcasting this was crazy informative. this is the stuff i don't get from wiki's and forums. thanks :)

  • First? Good video man.
