i cant install freenas on my usb key because its 4gb and i dont have one smaller :(
also can my old laptop that i want to turn into a freenas . it says in bios boot to usb harddrive. do i select this to boot to freenas on the usb key ? if i can even get freenas on my 4gb usb stick :(
can this be installed as a standalone OS? and if it would be a standalone OS, and had movies stored in the old laptop - connected to TV, will I be able to stream videos to the TV? Or would you suggest installing FreeNAS on top of a linux OS, LinuxMint for example. Thanks...
Can you connect computers such as macs and pcs via USB3/firewire 800 to the freenas for faster file transfer i.e backups etc or can the freenas be only used through the network?
Can I create a RAID (5) volume on the freenas, then Truecrypt the ENTIRE spanned volume? I do not want to create an encrypted container, but encrypt the entire volume making the data contained therein theft-proof. Do-able?
I downloaded the Freenas 8 version, and it's completely different. Also, it miss "transmission" tab and other settings... It seems a "stripped down" version. What's the problem??
Here's a question for you. Is it possible to organise files on the server without them having to be copied across the network to my PC then back again?
i.e. if I had downloaded a large file (20GB+) with bittorrent onto the server and then wanted to put the file in a different folder on the server, how would I do this?

Hey Chris, I really enjoyed that video on Freenas. It is very informative. I have a quick question for you. I have setup one myself. I have tried to mount an usb drive without any luck. I keep getting the following error: root: Error: Failed to mount /dev/da1s1 using EXT2. Can you help? Thanks

I was going to say that too, but I was trying to find a less crude way of introducing it. Precision is very-much needed if you want people to understand you better. You're also setting the pronunciation example for others in the same way. I hope I was of help.
I gotta say thanks for this video... I've setup FreeNAS on an old IBM Netvista P4 1.8ghz box with 512MB of RAM and for now a few smaller hard drives (2x40GB and 1x120GB). I for the life of me couldn't get the samba service running on FreeNAS... it wasn't until I watched this video that I noticed the little 'enable' tickbox to the far right of the config page. DOH!!!
@Noxtek...lol... I had the same issue when I first set it up, but I noticed the Enable checkbox by chance... Once it was enabled, though, it worked like a charm!
Very nice video tut. I'm definately convinced what os to use when I recieve my $180 Atom 330 system tomorrow ;) I'm gonna use my 1TB Seagate HDD with it. Later I'm gonna buy a Nvidia ION box to feed my tv with the content I put on my NAS.

Is it possible to run free nas in an ad-hoc network? I just want to stream media to my aspire one. If it is possible will other laptops be able to connect to such network?
Thanks for the video, I'm also setting up a server which will run FreeNAS, I have a PCI to IDE Card with 8 IDE Hard drives with a total size of 230GB (the drives are tiny)
check out m0n0wall and pfsense which are related to freenas not only because they are freebsd too, but pfsense and freenas originally got their interfaces from m0n0wall
"Keep it geeky!" Hah, love it. Video was pretty long but really interesting.
I had freeNAS set up for about a year now and zero problems with it, well apart from one time the web interface wasn't working when I installed new harddrives and I kicked it twice.
It then came up with a bad read error on my 750GB HDD. I prayed and rebooted, thankfully it worked and I will never kick it again!
I have it linked up with XBMC, it really is the most ultimate media center, and its all free!! Amazing.
The version of FreeNAS you are using in the video has horizontal drop down links at the top. I have the latest version and this only has static links to the left side. Are there different versions or have you applied a theme or something?
I tried freeNAS on VirtualBox. I couldn't get the network working correctly. It saw an Up interface but I couldn't ping anything but my own IP. I also tried it on a spare computer but it hung on boot up. I guess I was having an unlucky day. I haven't given up yet.
I have a old dell computer that should run this program with no problems. I have a xbox 360 and a existing home network and also a one terabyte external hard drive. Is there any written guide to do this step be step cause i am a newbie to networking :)

@bmw2go11
does the hard drive goes inside the ZOTAC? or is it an external drive ?
legatoboy 1 year ago
@legatoboy The zotac motherboard goes inside a case/shell bought separately.
Most people call the case as a cpu, or box. But actually its just there to protect the inner components.
The hard drive also goes inside the case with screws; the cables are then attached to the motherboard for data transfer.
If you are not sure how/ what pieces you need for a server/ computer ask a professional or jupiterbroadcasting or even myself.
I hope you now understand.
