It speaks volumes that she doesn't need studio editing, costuming, dancers and stage effects. She is purely talented and works at her craft. It is a wonderful and rare thing to see a true singer/songwriter these days. She's great.

@slaldrich Not as rare as you think, its just that record companies are not behind anything but factory processed music. At least she is naturally BEAUTIFUL, down to Earth, business minded, talented and white. The record company execs must wet themselves when they noticed her. And even then, because it's not factory produced crap, it limits her celebrity. It would probably help if she were to date someone famous and shoot someone or maybe make a P Hilton vid.

Why did Eminem eclipse everyone in his weight class even though the numbers game as a single white rapper was against him? (Although he is good). White people buy more records. In the USA and Europe (the biggest record markets) non whites are a minority.

@supercarrot3000 Race may be a factor in selling records, but i don't think it's as big as you think it is. If Michael Jackson sold more records when he was white, that would surprise me; a ton of his famous songs everyone knows was when he was black (Thriller, I'm Bad, etc) Eminem is a successful rapper, but he's one of the only white successful rappers i can think of, the rest are black. Jimi Hendrix is black, and we know him as one of the greatest guitarists ever. Talent defined these people.

@Trewq79 I don't want to take anything away from Ms Bareilles, I think she's great. The focus on colour detracts away from her deserved accomplishments. However there are a LOT of talented people in the world. It's the business proposition that makes a difference, Race/Culture/Religion/Affinity with your target audience are marketing variables. Effectiveness of marketing, not talent, sells more units.
