Could it be Robinet/Tweedledum??; he made a film called L'abito bianco di Robinet (see IMDB) There is another Robinet film on the Europa film site....he looked similar, but Robinet Boxeur has him without the moustache, so difficult to be sure.
I don't think this is Deed, either -- the moves aren't much like his, and I think Deed was a little shorter. The manservant looks and acts more like Deed than the leading actor does.
Someone had put a number of Andre Deed --also known as Cretinetti, Boireau, and Foolshead -- films online about a year ago (with German subtitles underneath the French subtitles. Unfortunately, they were only on YouTube for about six months --- I'd like to see them again, because he was a very interesting artist. (I'd also like to see more of the Itala films that were filmed in Torino.)
… I'm pretty sure that André Deed is NOT in it, regardless of what the title says. The 'restauration' must have been done a long time ago, when even archives didn't know very much about the early years of cinema. At the time the film was made, it looks more like 1908, André Deed was busy playing 'Boireau' over at 'Pathé Frères'. Maybe it is Paul Bertho, who did the 'Patouillard' series for 'Lux'? I hope film historians will look at it again some day.
No I'm not. But I certainly would have liked that :-)
I did some 'amateur' research on Max Linder and came across André Deed and some of his 'Boireau' films. I also learned that not everything 'so called' film historians say is written in stone.
well... sorry for my bad, very bad english. I worked in Bologna's film archive and now I work in Rome. When I was in Bologna I watched this film for the first time. With other ten films it belong to a restoration project with the Paris film archive. At the Bologna archive we didn't know that he wasn't Andre Deed. Probably neither at the Paris film archive. You can try to contact they...
