I've seen Bernadette in concert and as Annie Oakley. I consider myself a huge fan, and would give anything to see her as Desiree. She was miscast as Annie Oakley, and she seemed not at all committed to the performance. I've heard her Mama Rose was not up to par. (It was waiting for Patti.) In concert however, she was one of the best solo concerts I've ever seen. Up there with Barbra Streisand, Patti Lupone, and Lena Horne. This part feels tailor-made for Bernadette's talents.
I truly can't stress it enough that people NEED to see this show with Bernadette Peters. She's giving the best performance in New York. The applause she received after "Send In The Clowns"-- which practically shook the theater-- paled in comparison to the ovation she got at the curtain call. She embodies every element of the character perfectly: the humor, the cynicism, the sensuality, the bitterness, and the heartbreak.
I think it's for the first time that I find the second cast even more interesting then the original one.. I LOVE Catherine and Angela and I was not sure how will Bernardette and Elaine follow ...but this is AMAZING !!! No wonder they call them BROADWAY LEGENDS !!!
Bernadette is the consummate Sondheim singer. She is not only amazing in this role but she actually suits the role, which was written for a woman a bit older than a youthful 40, for what I think should be obvious reasons in the text itself. Anyone who knows anything about theatre knows that this "replacement" is the real deal, more so than her predecessor.
Hey I tip my hat to Bernadette and Elaine, Catherine and Angela are a tough act to follow! Really you can't go wrong with Sondheim. I'm just a romantic and Catherine and Alex had amazing chemistry! I saw the show in Dec when it opened, snowy nasty night, friends and I schlepped in to the city, and the night was just as cold and nasty when we left, but all agreed that A Little Night Music with Catherine and Angela and cast was worth the horrid trip in and out of the city, congrats Catherine!
Yeah, so I'm REALLY glad I saw the show with Catherine and Angela! Bernadette, although a great actress herself, doesn't seem to fit into this musical (in my opinion!). Catherine IS Desiree, and don't let me get started on Angela. She MADE the show! But, then again, the original cast of anything (even a revival) is always the best!
...You know, from a "Highlights Reel", I kinda expected to see someone actually sing rather than just have "Send in the Clowns" play over random clips...
LOL That "peck" is after she announces she has to play Hedda for a week and Frederick makes the comment about Pergotory sp? and then paradise and then they walk off together. Their big embrace(many moments before that) on their knees is staged just like the previous cast and very much a long and passionate kiss.
Bernadette's not Catherine, just doesn't look right. That kiss didn't look as heartfelt as Alex and Catherine, more peck than passion. Love Bernadette's hair though, she must be happy she does't have to wig it ;)
You're right. Bernadette's NOT Catherine ... because Bernadette is a profoundly talented actress and singer. That kiss, though short, has all the love and laughter in it that Fredrik and Desiree have shared. Two old fools who can finally be together. I'm seeing her on Saturday and am enormously excited.
@MrMproft I read your comment and it made me smile. After I see something with Bernadette in it I always say, "She had pretty hair!" even if it is a wig.
The show was wonderful with Catherine and Angela and is wonderful with Bernadette and Elaine. The entire cast is marvelous. I'm sure Steve Sondheim couldn't be happier with this production.
What is that instrumentation at 0:44? Ugh, sounds electric and chunky, rather than beautifully warm and lush.

Bernadette Peters was born to play Desiree. She gives an exquisite performance, and I can't believe I was lucky enough to see her in this show!

and she is "wigging" it. Her wigs are just based on her real hair.
