In the REAL story, the Prince ends up going with the other women despite what the mermaid has done to win his love, so the mermaid dies and turns into sea foam. But that ending would tell children that life isn't full of happy endings, so Disney changed it to include priests with boners instead.

In this scene , she sells her soul to the devil. Her heart, soul, and literal voice is given up for someone. She sacrifices her life or her state of being. The andersen story is a tale of unselfish love, sacrifice, and redemption. There is a christianity spin on the original story, if you have noticed. All about ariel symbolizing Jesus Christ a bit. I did have the andersen book of storyies so thats where I got that. Found it very interesting.

Actually kingaaron19 was right. She took her voice because without it, Eric wouldn't recognize her. However, she did take it in exchange for her being turned into a human, yyesss. Buuut.. Ariel in this scene, gives up pretty much her whole reason to exist and her whole being to the devil. Her voice was her soul, and that was who ariel was. I get a sense in the movie, that ariel really never realized she had such a valuable instrument. She doesnt care to show it off like her sisters. She is such a tomboy and likes collecting things, whereas her sisters are all about the looks. And yet ariel has the best voice and looks in the ocean. Funny how she doesnt hafe to try hard for 'em.

@Pinhead222 it's pretty harmless. And the little plot details are there as wel: the characters look aged, they managed to get the original cast (except for Eric i think)

and the antagonist is pretty fun too.

the prequel on the other hand forgets all about the established characters and has no respect for it's audience's intelligence. The only good thing about it is that we spend more time with ariel's sisters and we (finally!) get an explanation for triton's fear of ariel going to the surface
