Apparently this guy "Ibarragnify" upset a lot of people with his comments about foley being a thing of the past - and proceeded to remove each and every one of said comments^^
Ok, (some) of you guys are total, self absorbed idiots that really...have no clue what you are talking about. Specifically, lbarraganify and halenpan. You guys know everything don't you!? Halebpan, I just checked out your demo. Don't quit your day-job yet. You are a monkey that is repeating learned things, not real world things. This foley conversation is ridiculous. Foley is used every day, in every studio. It is the glue that brings life to a picture. Before squawking bullshit, try experience!
Everything you've said is totally accurate? How about "FOLEY isn't even done anymore. We cut all sounds from a library in the studio." You don't have to do much work to find proof that films utilize Foley. There's actually a great video on how the sounds for King Kong were made on youtube.
Not true. Even with today's technology, cutting and pasting a hundred foostep sounds and aligning them with the picture would be a hassle. All you really need is a pair of shoes and a microphone. This is still done the old fashioned way today, especially for things like television shows, and even some video games. (Yes, actual foley in video games, I'm talking about things like cutscene-specific audio that needs to be perfectly in sync with a scene. Sometimes it's done with Foley.)
Come on. Several games had their effects recorded by Foley artists. Not THAT many, but look up Republic Commando for one. TV shows still do use Foley very regularly. They already have all the sound and editing equipment they need, anyway. All it takes is a Youtube search for foley stuff and you'll find plenty of usages of it in modern media. I'll admit my knowledge of the business is way down there, but I do know I am more than "not even close". Foley's still good today.
@lbarraganify do you actually know anyone working in games? Games, TV, Movies: All of them still utilize foley. Trust me, much faster and easier to get the right performance.
@lbarraganify well you obviously have your views. I just happen to work in the game industry designing sound for AAA titles and we use foley all the time. But you are welcome to your view. :)
@phlizmo I do Production Mixing and Sound Design for film and TV for about 6 years now as a freelancer. I agree about foley importance, but I really prefer to get foley from the set from the real clothing and staff, there are many techniques to prevent noise getting in to a lavs and a boom mics so you can grab Dialogue as well as Foley at the same time, thus you won't have to do all the foley in the film in studio though some movies will require many additional foley...
@Greenjah81 ...sound invented and recorded in post, such as animation films are a superb freedom for designer as well as some films that use 3D graphics and particular wardrobe or objects that will need a special sound created.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Foley is used in many different forms of media, TV, Movies, Video Games and Radio. Your studio must lack experience and skill.
Foley is the process of adding ANY SFX into a production. The sound can be of a non-living item or a character. The sound of an egg cracking, tree falling, a shower...all of these can be introduced with Foley.
Im finishing my music tech degree at uni and ive chosen to do foley sound for my final year project. I wish we had a big foley facility like that :-D I think it can be really fun but im having to do all the recording, editing, mixing etc on my own so there is a lot of work! haha hopefully it will lokk good though. The work you have all done is fab!!! i wish mine was that good lol
very well presented

Foley is just human sounds. I guess that all replaced audio is considered foley. but foley is just human noises, clothes, footsteps etc.
