The similarities between earlier Greek Mythology figures and jesus are uncanny. The jesus story is just one of many in a long line of fictional god stories that were born of virgins, raised from the dead and performed miracles. You're so right, people who have experienced anything religiously have mental illness. NOT! I have experienced God, his actual person. It's not something I can prove, but as real as the physical world. I hope that just because some of you haven't experienced it, you won't be close-minded about it.

Obviously, most people who have spiritual experiences are not mentally ill.

However, it's very common for schizophrenics to express themselves using overtly religious language and themes, and I've no doubt that many of the more extreme religious fanatics--the ones that even scare other believers--are suffering from some kind of mental illness.

When a good friend of mine was going through a psychotic break a few years back, he became convinced that God was speaking to him through radio broadcasts. (As you know, it's not uncommon for schizophrenics to hear voices.) Later, he walked into his office at work and proudly announced to his boss that he was Jesus Christ. His boss saw the problem and informed his wife, and my friend was hospitalized that day.

As my friend's incident underscores, it's human nature to attribute powerful and unique experiences to something outside of ourselves. It's particularly tempting to slap the "God" label onto such seemingly transcendent episodes.

I'm not asserting dogmatically that the source of these experiences isn't some divine entity; I'm just calling for a bit of skepticism about such claims.

I was being a bit glib, and I should have chosen my terminology more carefully.

I have noticed that the ramblings of people we might call the "hyperreligious" are very similar to the grandiose, disconnnected ideas one hears from schizophrenics (albeit with a consistently "spiritual" theme).

The first time I read Revelation, I was stunned by the similarities between the material in that document and the writings of schizophrenics.

Yes schizophrenia is mental, but that means it takes place in the brain... A physical organ... There is quite literally, and I am not exagerating in the slightest here, no way that there would be no physical, chemical reaction causing it. That is just how the brain works.
