  • Proffits thats all thats important today. How much more are they making today?

  • fuck you G.E.!!

  • Jim Jensen was my grandfather

  • 000h, I miss seeing the 10 1/2 inch reel tape machines! And record turntables. Good Old Radio hath visual charms.

  • Jane Velez-Mitchell is basically Nancy Grace-lite now.

  • Screw WFAN, WNBC was da best!

  • In This Clip, From 3:12 To 3:17, It Was WCBS-TV's Channel 2 News At 5 Video Close From Friday Evening, October 7, 1988.

  • In This Clip, From 0:00 To 0:23, It Was WCBS-TV's Channel 2 News At 5 Video Open And Video Bumper From Friday Evening, October 7, 1988.

  • Jim Jensen was the best!

  • Cousin Brucie, wow

  • And CBS butchered their WBZ their Boston radio outlet over the past year.. Radio has found a way to kill itself over the past decade. this coming from a 28 year veteran..who was ousted in 2006..

  • @bobandrayfan1 I couldn't agree more. Radio plain sucks now. All syndicated voice tracked garbage with no local or live talent save for the big cities during the AM and PM drive. It's really sad what has happened to radio over the last 30 years.

  • jane velez mitchell now on HLN

  • If you ask me, this was idiocy. At the time WNBC was the top radio station in the country. Then they decide to stop it from broadcasting and down went radio from there.

  • anpanman!

  • wow jane velez-mitchell!! now she got her own show on HLN!

  • The classic sound of AM music radio continues on WLNG 92.1 FM and streaming on the web.

  • Ever since WNBC changed it's call letters and format to WFAN,the station has never been the same. WNBC had more status and basically did for more than six decades. I listened to WNBC and really liked it. Now,I very seldom listen to WFAN. Like I said, the radio station has never been the same since the switch.

  • Bill Cullen died two years after WNBC 660 did. But I know what was meant by "NBC started to focus only on television back in the early 70s," as it was 1972 (I think) that NBC sold WKYC-AM and FM in Cleveland, thus getting out of the radio business in that city.

  • Jane: "sell off it's radio division of several stations around the country..." Meaning that NBC owned about 7 or 8 stations when the sale went through. At least ABC and the old CBS (before ARS/Infinity) radio groups had at least a couple dozen stations... NBC started to focus only on television back in the early 70s, so it wasn't a real surprise when the sale was announced. GE sold the division only because they bought NBC and also cause they are a "cut, cut, cut" company.

  • First NBC in 1988... Then ABC in 2007... Only CBS remains now!!!

  • well at least ABC radio is owned by (soon to be dead) radio group. NBC sold their radio assets, and was forced to not let the new owners keep the calls.

  • Cousin Brucie is the only one second to Howard Stern that knows a damn about the radio industry. Them two can brighten the NY radio market again today if it weren't for the the bafoons running the radio groups now.

  • this is like when they turn off analog to digital.

  • Wow! I remember Jim Jensen (God Rest his Soul). I also remember when Carol Martin and Dr. Frank Field were on Channel 2 as well. Those were the days! Thanks for posting.

    A++++++++

Have a great day and a great week! Puerto Rican Love from New York City!

  • I saw that guy jim jensen at my high school back in the day like in 93 or 94 he came to speak about something i forgot what it was but r.i.p.

  • If you can't remember what he spoke about, it must had been really boring, since he had came out of drug rehab a few years before. He lost his prime by that time, then to get demoted by management by 95 and pass on four years later.

  • i didn't know there was an WNBC radio.

  • That's because the "pretty people" management of GE/NBC management worked so hard to brainwash everyone that there wasn't a W/NBC radio network (notably the NBC 75th ann that should had been the 50th of their TV network) And in Jane's report, actually the reason for the demise, was because GE really wanted the TV network, and their "cut, cut, cut" theme, radio wasn't a performer on their bottom line. That same theme may put the NBC TV network (and WNBC-TV too) "in the drawer" in maybe 5 years.

  • Also after GE bought RCA and NBC in 1986, FCC rules at the time did not allow a new owner to keep both a radio and TV station in the same market. ABC sold its radio division to Citadel and WABC still exists. NBC should've done the same. I personally think NBC should create a new radio division, maybe get into satellite radio.

  • I think the FCC rules also prohibited having same calls with different owners. (Hence WWOR from WOR-TV, WNYW from WNEW and the WNBC cluster). The WNBC sale basically killed the calls, not necessarily the stations signal. And the Citadel sale from the Mouse House group from a couple years ago had nothing to do with the rules back then, they since been relaxed.

  • ...And Citadel paid too much for ABC Radio from the Mouse House (rather Citadel being sold, srry). After the financial crisis from 2007 into last year, they became very debt ridden, and their stock is penny shares, probably to buy a little toy prize. There has been talks of selling stations, or shutting them down, which would be a shame. Citadel owns the 50k/up on the hill/FM blowtorches, in which they are filled with commercials now. Not what they used to be...

  • That's where satellite radio is far superior. I personally think NBC can create a new radio division. If the rules on ownership have been relaxed, maybe there can be a new WNBC, but they probably wouldn't be able to buy back the 660 frequency from WFAN. They would need to buy another station with a new frequency or create a new one. There's no 990 AM in NYC. So the new WNBC-AM could be on 990, to keep with the tradition(WABC on 770 and WCBS on 880).

  • Yes there was and they ended at the same numbers as their frequency. They where on the air @ 660khz and broadcasted for 66 years.

  • Al Roker Replaced Dr. Frank Fields on WNBC.

  • anpanman!

  • The Day The Music Died...again.

This time on 660 WNBC. <:-(

  • Doesn't Jane-Velez Mitchell have a show on Headline News now?

  • Why, yeah, now that you mention it . . .

  • alan just left hannity and colmes.. he one liberal I actually like :)

  • Don Imus has been expelled from radio
