is straight up ridiculous. I think if that engine were a person it'd be licking windows. this makes me sad also, because they discontinued the inline 5 for a wheezy v6 :(. however that wheezy v6 was also the basis for the 2.7t/b5 s4 engine, so I can sorta get over the loss of the legendary i5.

@QuattroStig I think it is a blow-off. That way you can keep the compressor wheel spinning even if the intake flap is closed. Makes for much better reaction times and at boost-level like here, you don't destroy your turbo...
Yea that's the purpose of a blow off valve. But the noise in this case is not. It's very easily confused. But in the high horsepower Audi 20V Turbo's such as the GTO and the S1 Sport Quattro it is a wastegate making the whistle. I know this from experience and older Quattro experts.
@QuattroStig As far as I know, the noise is from a BOV (They didn't have them back then...) neither, nor from the wastegate. You know how the wastegate works? It limits the boost pressure by bypassing the exhaust turbine so it has nothing to do with noise while changing gears.
The whistle sound comes from something called compressor surge or compressor stall. If the throttle flap closes, the blades of the compressor get into a stall (Like an airplanes wing) because...
I am extremely aware of how a wastegate works. I am very familiar with the five cylinder engine. And have been in the company of a generation of people who worked on the GTO and S1. And you are incorrect compressor surge is not related. That is when the cold wheel of the turbo cannot compress the air anymore results in a reverse flow. AKA Compressor Stall (Similar to jet engine stall) If you google it you might learn something:) The wrong knowledge is worse than no knowledge.

From 89 200 10v turbo 80's Ur Quattro 10V turbo (MC Engine Code), the 91 200 20V turbo(3B Engine Code), 90's S4 and S6 20V(AAN Engine Code) and S2's all have external wastegates. All of the 20V Turbo cars also where equipped with a diverter valve from the factory. No audi was originally released with a BOV ever. But in some high horsepower race applications where the engine management(Engine Computer) system does not have a MAF sensor a BOV was used.

Race cars actually dont use blow off valves. Thats the compressor flutter. Blow off valves are redundant on race cars. They dont use them on rally cars, old ones and current gens.

@meedic be careful but 200 km/h is very fast, my fast drive was 250 km/h and i have my driver lizence since 2 month ^^
