Had an LT1 w/cam only upgrade in my Iroc and i was really surprised how fast it was, mustangs did not have a chance, they had to be heavily modified to get me... The LT1 is very underrated.... especially in a third gen...
i knew the lt1 was goin to win no matter what was done to the stang. the 96 stang is the worst and slowest v8 mustang ever built. not takin anything from the camaro cause its a nice car with a cool swap. any times on the camaro? i bet that stang dosent even run high 14s with those mods.really sad time for gt mustangs were 96 and 97. 98 got a lil better and the 99-10 gt stangs did well runnin high 13s and well we all know about the 2011 5.0 is a beast!
@geedunk13 that's kind of impossible to answer. its got alot to do with how much you can do yourself and how u have to pay others to do. it also is based on how extreme u want to build it. id say 1500 would be the absolute cheapest someone could do it (doing everything themselves, including grafting the wiring harnesses). but you could spend over 10k easy if you went real extreme
damn, the camaro just ripped the stang an new hole or two. hopefully by the time i get into highschool i'll have a nice, built 383 lt1 swapped in with a true dual exhuast with flows 44 into my 87 IROC-Z. Damn cant wait. gonna suck working my azz off to pay for it but still.
@69camaro396fan its worth it. i like your dram of a 383 lt1 iroc but for around the same price you can do a 383 ls1 and make about 100more horsepower.
don't have any more of those old videos, but i can assure you it wasn't any different. that was never meant to be a fair race, just two friends screwing around. i destroyed his car no matter the speed
@nick6204 1996 is a shit year for mustang GT's well hell 93-98 wasn't anything special, those GTs couldn't compared to the camao z through those same years unless it had full bolt on and the Z was stock. The only reason the Cobra gets the SS from a roll... 0-40 stock vs stock is because a 4.6 takes less time to whined out than a 5.7 but after 60 the SS begins to shine... and by the time its 120 its beginning to fade away. The 02 SS with minor bolt oncan hang with the 03 Corba at higher speeds.
That is just so nasty. Thats just an lt1, not even an lt4. My expression was the same as the guy in this video. Too many times I have encountered LS guys that hate and dis the lt's like they're trash. 3rd gen with lt1 swap is a beast power : weight ratio and should not be taken lightly. That 4.6 had it coming to him. Perfect sleeper.
@ChurchBoy0487 Yeah man, LT1 setup in a light, low optioned, no T-top, no A/C or power accessories 3,000 lb. 3rd generation F-body, is a good contender to an LS1 powered 4th Gen... good video, the pre- P.I. version 2V modular Mustang never had a chance...
What kind of 1/4 times are you getting with your setup? And what car did you get the LT1 out of? I am thinking of doing something similar to my 86 because there are a ton of LT1 donor cars where I live that arent to expensive.
i've run high 12's with only a 2.0-2.1 60', traps around 109-111. i got the lt1 and t56 out of a wrecked '97 z28. but to be completely honest i've been having alot of trouble out of the lt1 lately, so if i could do it again i would go with an lsx engine.
Not bad, The reason I asked is because I found a donor car, its a buick roadmaster with a LT1, it runs and drives and he only wants $300 for it. So it crossed my mind to do a LT1 swap. I dont know if I sould do the LT1 or do a 300 -320hp 5.7 TPI setup insted but I havent decided yet. It would be cheaper and eaiser to do TPI but what route would you go? Thanks
i would not use a roadmaster lt1 for sure. those are the "baby" lt1's 4.3L if i remember correctly. if it was between that and a 350tpi, do the tpi for sure. btw check out TPIS, they have some really good stuff for tuned ports, especially their mini-ram manifold
The LT1 in the roadmaster is the 5.7 v8. there is no way in hell im putting the 4.3 in my car lol. Im kinda leaning toward the 300hp TPI setup because its cheaper and makes great torque at low rpm. but the LT1 is a deal at $300 but its a lot of wiring compared to the TPI.
i don't think that the lt1 makes that much more power than the tpi, at least not enough to validate the trouble it is to swap. i do however strongly recommend a t56. i went lt1 because my car was originally a 305 tbi. if i had a tuned port car i might not have swapped engines, just trannys
My car was originally a carbed 305 and the reason I want to do a swap is because I want it to be fuel injected and for a power increase. If I can find a deal on a t56 I will pick it up but its a 700r4 for now. I will find out tommorow if Im getting the LT1 or not.
lt1's have alot better fuel injection systems, and are better to build, ive seen tpi cars with alot of mods and only make 350rwhp, lt1 on the other hand loves to be modified.
@firechicken76 the only problem with tpi is the fact that the runners are long as hell, 17 inches or so i believe... so they dont flow as well, and power is only made till about 4700rpm... tpi is more for bottom end torque than upper rpm power...
if you look at an lt1 intake it looks like a super ram intake, which was a form of tpi... just much shorter runners, 7" i believe, you lose alot of lower end torque but you can get much more horsepower up top...
@aot1988 i know your comment was a year ago but don't use the LT1 out of a roadmaster. its not the the same as the f-body Lt1. the roadmaster Lt1 has iron heads not the alum ones in the f-body just an fyi
thats about what I run, ive got an 88 gta with an ls1/t56 trapped 111 last time I took it to the track, my 60 was 2.0 but my first to second shift threw me almost side ways, check out the run on my page! Nice car BTW.
The most performance restrictive component of third gens is the tuned port injection. l98's have more potential than ford's 302. i won't say the same about the 305 as it is designed for fuel economy (same stroke as the 350, but 3.75" bore compared to 4".) Coupled with the long runner style intake it makes gobs of low end torque but lacks much past 4500 rpm.
Yeah, I've been readin' about how the stock runners on the TPI setup are too small and restrictive, and after 5,000 rpm, torque was fallin' all the way down to 250 lbs ft, I was readin' way back in an 03 issue of Camaro Performers magazine how that Holley StealthRam intake was significant upgrade, it just had some hood clearance issues, so Holley introduced the MiniRam...
yup, but through a stealth in there and a new manifold and they will scream. That is the most restrictive...second id say the godamned trannies. couldnt handle much power.
lol wtf. my 305 is at around 320 hp and 315 ft/lbs. 305 respond well to upgrades and anyone who thinks they cant perform has no idea what they are talking about. its easier to mildy build a 305 to at or around a ls1s power and costs about half as much to do so XD.
well i hope my 89 formula 350s different, havent drivin it yet cause it blew head gaskets from previous owner but its got venom injectors, hooker shorties, mild cam, flowmaster duals, and bigger valves.
Why does it say LT1 in the headline of the video? That looked like an L98 Camaro (would have to be unless the LT1 was swapped in). LT1s didn't appear in FBODYS until 1993.
It's either a 91 or 92 RS so it wouldn't have an L98 to begin with unless its a B4C. I don't doubt thats an LT1 car because it's certainly not the stock TBI.
the lt1 was made in camaros from 93-97 and the ls1 was from 98-02. the highest horsepower rating for the lt1 was 275-310 depending on year unless you had a police car then it was 350 the ls1 base horsepower was 320-325 hp depending on year! 1993 pace car lt1 had 275hp 1993 DRM camaro lt1 had 375hp 1994 ZL1 had a 572 aluminum had 636hp 1996 camaro SS Lt1 had305hp 1997 z28 had 285hp lt1 berger camaro had 380hp 1997 ss had 305hp Lt1 1998 ls1 had 320 1999 z28 ss had 320 1999 Zl1 had 770
thats not an iroc you can tell by the body kit and since there is no wing its not a z28 either its an RS i know i have 2! the lt1 is a swap cause the only engines a rs can have is a 6 or a tbi v8 unless it was a police rs car which came with the tpi 350! the tpi was either a 305 or 350 for z28s and irocs. but irocs where made from 85-90 and didnt have the body kit this car had proving its a 91 or 92 car and a rs cause plan hood and no wing!
ummmm... anyone wanna help me out here? (I'm a GM man myself, btw) Horsepower wars were DOMINATED by ford, in that department from Mid 80's all the way to Mid 90's. The Vette was the ONLY killer Chevy had in that time. I DID, however, drive a couple of 90 model Firebird Formula models like 5 yrs ago. I was impressed, I'll admit. but they STILL had NOTHIN on a 5spd 5.0. I've owned 2 of those, a 89 lx 5.0 and a 90 GT 5.0. (liked LX better)
Are you kidding? The 5.0 mustangs from the 80's up till about 90 were putting out about 180 hp except the cobra. while the tpi 5.0 and 5.7 in third gens put out 215 to about 240.
UM yes dumb ass. LOOK IT UP! God where do you morons keep coming from? stock mustang 5.0 came with about 210 in the early ninetys except for the cobras which had about 30 more. ALL i have to say is look it up and you will know how dumb you are.
I sat there and said I was a GM lover, but I'll tell ya. I've owned all kinds of cars and rode in way more. The first 5.0 Mustang I ever drove, I bought. It was by Far the sickest STOCK car I'd ever driven. in 2001 Mind you. 140000 Miles and poorly taken care of. First race I ever raced I beat an Eclipse Spider GST by 3 damn car lengths in just under a 1/4 mile. You gotta do a litte more studyin and give credit where credit is due. If that car wasnt sick it wouldnt be so popular.
FIRST HALF of the 80s. Not second half. Your prolly talkin the Carb version prolly PRE 84 85ish. The HO 5.0 was Always the fastest every year it was made. YEAH till the LT1 came out, we know that. I own the issue of Hot Rod magazine listing how Ford owned those years. I said Mid 80s to Mid 90s. You said it best 305 and 350 with the figures You listed NEVER outran the High Output 5.0, pre 94ish. and the only thing the "cobra" had different back then was an Intake.. I think...? lol
i have a 88 auto mustang gt with CAI and O/r X pipe and dynomax cat back and a 89 firebird formula with a 305 TPI STOCK and the mustang cant burnout standing still womping on the gas with little 205 tires...mean while the bird did a nice burnout with 245s and a lower gear ratio, needs a tune up and blows a lil smoke on start up....so take your hot rod mag and stick it up your ass.. even the 305 can proli out run the 5.0 H.O
hot rod mag. ok. more than likely I owned my first HOT ROD, PERIOD when you were gettin yur first NUT hair. always happens this way on youtube. People ALT/TAB over, grab a fact and blow it into peoples faces like its real knowledge. Yeah that firebird you "own" is WAY different than that Camaro he owns. STOCK mind you. His is swapped for a WAY better motor. I test drove 3 formulas JUST like yours the week I bought my first 5.0. YEah they are bad. But 5.0 AUTO/5.0 STICK is a BIG damn difference.
the difference in an auto stang (back then) and a stick? my GOD. Busslengths in any length race. I've driven 2 autos. one GT and one lx Convertible. MY GOD I'd be scared to race either against a new v6 stang! My junky first 5.0 hatchback would boil the tires damn near off the RIMS on any pavement. But the Formulas I drove would get crazy too even all being autos. a 5.0 STICK and a formula would be a nice race now. Not sure where my money would go though. Prolly still the stang
"WHAT!" lol

from '93-'02 the mustang could not keep up with the camaros, but yes fox-body stangs were quicker than third gen camaros
drvngstorm05 4 years ago
Stock for stock, a 5.0 won't keep up with an L98.
MCarll 4 years ago
Are you kidding? The 5.0 mustangs from the 80's up till about 90 were putting out about 180 hp except the cobra. while the tpi 5.0 and 5.7 in third gens put out 215 to about 240.
njm12333 4 years ago
um No sir I've had a 89 and 90 both had 280 or 285 stock.
topflightss 4 years ago

47glavine 3 years ago
hot rod mag. ok. more than likely I owned my first HOT ROD, PERIOD when you were gettin yur first NUT hair. always happens this way on youtube. But 5.0 AUTO/5.0 STICK is a BIG damn difference.
topflightss 3 years ago
oh yea no doubt auto to stick is big diff..thats deff true...a very sweet race would be a 5sp 305tpi(they did make them vs a 5sp stang
i think they run about the same 1/4mile times to
47glavine 3 years ago
the difference in an auto stang (back then) and a stick?

87 Not 90. like I said. so not necessarily "mid 80's" but still closer than 90.
topflightss 4 years ago
third gen camaros for the most part were not very fast you're right, but thats why i put that i have an lt1 swapped in mine
drvngstorm05 4 years ago
very good move. I dont think anyone here understood you did that, based on the chat. Nice car though bro.
