I don't think east timor will be free and rich...only will be free, when our oil and gas
finish but not rich...Only more Poor...Our people help fight the Japanese and prevent
the invasion of Australia...And now they are helping us,taking our Oil and Gas,for we can have our freedom faster...Thanks to them to be so Good Samaritans...
That's sad, because most portuguese actually like Timor A LOT. And whatever some "lost cases" might say, we don't want to colonize you. One of the reasons Indonesia invaded, in 1975, was because, after the Carnation Revolution, Portugal was granting independence to all the colonies. And most portuguese feel guilty for it, we understand we where in part responsible for the terror you suffered.
Most people I know think we where to blame for abandoning you, not making sure you would remain independent. But the reason our government was against Indonesia was not just a governor's agenda. Lots of people supported your Independence. You have no idea. The Santa Cruz massacre hurt us almost as much as you...
What I mean is, yes, we where colonizers, but that part of our history is buried since 1975. And it will stay that way...
Yes, your country WAS to blame - your leaders were so obsessed with trying to get rid of the colonies, they were prepared to let Indonesia take over East Timor. The only reason Macau didn't go the same way was because China said it wasn't ready. They thought it'd be like India taking over Goa, without bloodshed, even though Suharto killed hundreds of thousands of his own people. If you liked the Timorese so much, you'd be investing in their country, and going there on holiday.
"If you liked the Timorese so much, you'd be investing in their country, and going there on holiday"
We already do that (the government and some companies). Even lots of (normal) people gave donations to help rebuild, some of those barely have enough to live. the portuguese government in 1975 did a big mistake, but you have to understand that has nothing to do with general portuguese opinion. politicians are not at our service now, much less back then.
I had a cousin in Timor with the UN. and the portuguese mission was one of the most well received there.
not to mention all the timorese who where given scholarships to study in Portugal (and I've met a few). That alone helped more than any euro we could've send.
and all those timorese where as well received as our military in Timor.
I've seen what Portugal does in East Timor, and it's not nearly enough, it's all 'para inglês ver" .
I would have kept the UN informed of the decolonisation process (which your government did not, and José Ramos Horta said it should have done) - it was doing exactly that for Cape Verde, for example.
I am convinced that, had the Portuguese launched an energetic worldwide campaign to internationalize the Timor issue in 1974-1975, President Suharto would not have used force against East Timor . Even after the Indonesian invasion had taken place, had the Portuguese pursued a determined campaign to dramatize the struggle and suffering of the Timorese, world opinion would have been aroused. ...
Anyway, it's nothing personal against you. As for mikalay, she was responding to the idiot who said Timor should be given back to Portugal. Most Timorese I know don't hate the Portuguese, any more than the Indonesians or Australians.
can you give some enlightments to those who dont know, how was it like when Timor were under Portuguese rule and how was it like when Timor was part of Indonesia?
I agree completely. I'm Singaporean, & Singapore was in almost as much poverty as TimorLeste just 40yrs ago, and look how far it's come. I have faith in your nation. & yes you shouldn't tolerate it, no one should. But maybe confronting it without the calling of names would be better? Actually, I think there is no need to waste time on immature people who do not know how to look beyond practicalities & see the hope of Timor. I'm very glad that you've replied, & I'm still hoping for that email! =)
I'm sorry, my family haved lived in Singapore since 1980, and I have visited Timor Leste, and Singapore was in FAR better shape back then than TL is now. Even though it was a shock when it was kicked out of Malaysia, it was MUCH better prepared for independence. However, even Malaysia has needed affirmative action for Malays because they didn't have the skills of the Chinese and Indians. But thanks for your support for your region's newest country.
@shalynyong17 You wrong, Singapore wasn't as poor as Timorleste 40's years ago. The claim that Singapore was a fishing village 40's years ago is a silly propaganda to credited current Government ( PAP ). Do you see the Freemason building near City Hall MRT? if Singapore was a fishing village then why the fuck Freemason bother to settled in Singapore? The fact of the matter Singapore was a major trading port for east india company during the colonization era.
Thanks to ur solidarity with Timor. Just to say that I'm profoundly proud with my Timor Leste. Though some ignorant so called expert in International Relations say that my country is unviable to be a nation-state, my respond to such way of thinking is that this so called expert need to open his/her mind to see the case of many nation-states with long history of years of independece but still strugling with their share of social, economic, political, education, health even poverty problems!
So do not think of calling your self an expert of international issues if your understanding of a new country of Timor should be compared to most of developing country with long history of functioning state institutions and democracy culture!
I hate the poverty in Timor as much as you all do,but I'm confident that Timor is gonna rise above it. Aren't you? But well, I just don't think this is the way to rise above it. Cheers, and just so you know, I REALLY REALLY REALLY MISS THE LAND OF TIMORLESTE&ITS CHILDREN. It would be great if any of you could email me the life of a typical teen in Timor, because I'm so curious to know. Is it possible? =D.
I honestly say that as a new nation we are learning to be a strong and democratic country based on the rule of law and the will of the people but however it does not mean we should accept stupid, racist, colonialist, and shamefull comentaries against our country!! Enough is enough! Viva Timor Leste!!
Hey, I've been to TimorLeste before, & I really love the land, its people & the children, & I just wanna say, there is such hope for Timor to keep progressing. But you guys arguing here on which country is shit ass & which isn't is not going to help in the progress of Timor one bit. I'm really touched to see how loyal you all are to your nation. But I think what would make more sense is to stand with dignity by your land, & not degrade yourself & not call other people names, for it does no use.

a retard country that should have never been cut off from the Motherland Indonesia ...stop creating this stupid micro states who will never stand on their feet and will end up in civil wars or living out of international charity
You should have not said this dude, you were given oportunity to interview my leaders and welcome in East Timor. You are such a piece of ignorant shit dude. If you are an indonesian, look at your country now, it is just a piece of shit in the world order, nobody count on your country mate, your country is not like china which is considered important to world order or like India which is the potential next superpower along with China and Russia!
I'm timorese, therefore I know what Indonesia is, It just a group of some bigs and smalls island and nations controled by javanese centralised type of administration full of rubish leadrship and corruption and unworthy human resourches!!!
or if u r a bloody natzi germany piece of shit, I wonder what your bloody devil leader Hitler would say said to you from Hell for considering Indonesia as your Motherland. If u wanna be with Indonesia, then take ur family to there, not Us Timorese people..ok or take your Indonesia Motherland concept and stick it in your bloody Germany ass!!!
You haven't watched the film then, have you? East Timor has oil. If living off your own oil reserves constitute living off international charity, then why not return Brunei to the Motherland Malaysia? DUH!
As for a different prospective I welcome that you want to hear news from other nations like this you can do this on line stuff or you can go old school and use a short wave radio you can find schedules by searching short wave radio they tell you the frequency and the time to listen you can also get a radio that records the program. Good thing to learn how to do since that medium is global and free. All you need is a few solar rechargeable batteries and you are never out of touch.
