Ashford and Simpson, didn't just write songs, they were giving us instructions, on how to have successful relationships, on how to be there for one another, on how to stand the test of time, on how to Love that special someone. I hope we listen, and follow by example!
Nick has always dressed the way I would've liked to dress. Well I am a singer and entertainer but I mean, way back in the 70s and 80s I dreamed of dressing outside of suits and Nick did just that. He's the only one, well Prince took after him to be daring in dress and show off their masculinity. Well outside of all of that I love me some A&S and this song is their trademark which made me love it back during that time.
So good to hear the long version, as the cassette single and the greatest hits CD only feature a rudely cut-off edited version. A song this passionate and brilliant should never be edited. You just want it to keep going and going. No more ballads like this in today's --ahem--"soul" arena. Thanks so much for posting this, one of my fave songs from 1989
Is this song in anyway connected to the "I'll Be There for You" ("You're All I Need to Get By") hit from Method Man and Mary J. Blige? I'm asking cause I've heard Ashford and Simpson's names mentioned in connection with that song, unless they were talking about how Ashford and Simpson wrote "You're All I Need to Get By" for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrall.
In the summer of 1989 I bought the cassette single of Ashford and Simpson's "Cookies and Cake" and was pleased to discover this song as the extra song. This is my fave A & S song!!!!! They do a passionate and talented vocal performance to a lush instrumental backing that is absent from today's "soul". I hope Ashford and Simpson know that they are beyond wonderful.....This ends my 1989 retro-review.
@MegaTyler98 "I'll Be There For You" was one of my favorite songs of the 80's. I still remember listening to it on New's Day 1990 in the top songs of 1989--can't believe that was 20 years ago! ;-)
One word describes this couple: Class, class, Class! Never in toruble with the law, obviously know how to keep parts of their life away from the press. They conduct themselves as all of our artists should. Their love is so obviously true. I love them for that too.
I love this song by ashord and simpson. It reminds me of me and my husband of 14 years. We been through the good and bad, in the mist of it all we are still together .
