Thanks for sparing time and adding to our knowledge.
Yup, you are right partially. it does have this meaning too. It is most commonly used in poetry with same meanings ie " A feeling of grudging admiration and desire to have something that is possessed by another" BUT as I mentioned right in the beginning that this is Arabic word and is used, still, in multiple shades of meanings. It is also used for 2 persons having professional jealousy. etc etc and so on.
@syedmauqib what does " sar pe saleeb" would mean , does it mean a cross or grave stone or what, i have searched other blogs but cud not find anything
"Hij'r" means "being in state of separation of a loved one/beloved" or in classical poetry, it reflects being in a phase of unfulfilled desire/urge. Also mean, in general, being "away" from someone. In short it is being away from your loved one while missing him/her because if you don't miss him/her then it is not "Hij'r", then, it is just a normal process/phenomenon of not being present.
Regarding the meaning of "Raqeeb" both in literally and considering its poetic sense, there is a detail explaination from me in the beginning. You would also find other people's comments and opinions too.
@aniket15588 Reqeeb means the person who comes between a two person and create a problem or in-short Enemy, and correct word is Hijer means "tanhai" or alone-ness
thanks so much for this upload. there is so much improvisaton in this live performance-- i particularly liked the way he started the gahzal --- and the word "junoon" uff-- too much!
Yes. He is no more physically but he would be with us as long as we live. He will remain alive as long as music exists. Though emotionally it is extremely tough for all of us who had been listening and loving his singing but reality is, no doubt, very hard to accept especially when it is unexpected.
We all miss him and would continue to miss him and also continue to love him too.
Dear uploader just for the correction the Saleeb meaning u r telling is true but here its not burden the meaning SALEEB in this ghazal is that he is standing in the graveyard and every person have a cross on his/her head...now plz listen the whole ghazal again and enjoy the new and real taste with true meaning and then u will knw so all of u listen it and enjoy more :)
This is one of the wonders of the poetry that everyone catches it in his or her own way or set of thinking/feeling.
Standing in the graveyard? For what? And what points towards this? Furthermore, all others have "Saleeb" on their heads for???...
Simpley we can say that the poet want to convey that everyone is so busy and carrying his own cross (burden of thoughts, sufferings, desires, wishes, disappointments etc) that none is available for being my campanion.
Thanks for paying attention and commenting and as I said or wrote somewhere that it is the beauty of poetry that everyone assumes or persumes his or her own meanings according to his or her knowledge. It is this diversity which attracts the mob. In short I may say; "Fikr-e-her-qus, Ba-qada-re-himat-e-Oost".
@bhupendrarege if you love someone and someone else also loves that person whom you love then he becomes your "raqeeb" and you also become his "raqeeb". and there can be more than two "raqeeb"
Hey, I am from Kerala, I don't know how it started and I got glued to Ghazals... Initially it was the magical spell of the Hindusthani music, but as I got deeper into the meaning of the poetry- of course I had to use an Urdu- English dictionary, but it has become an enchanting experience for me. Jagjith Singh is my all time favorite...but I also like Mehdi hassan and Ghulam Ali s well...
wow ..awesome lyrics TU HABIBA HEY YA RAQEEB HEY...i love this gazal soo much one of the best sung by Jagjitji.....so soothing ...so touching...touch my SOUl.....wow ..fantastic music....... fabulous...
Koi dost hai na raqeeb hai, tera sehar kitna ajeeb hai. Woh jo ishq tha woh junoon tha, yeah jo hijre hai ye naseeb hai. Yahan kiska chehra padha karoon, yahan kaun itna kareeb hai. Main kise kahoon mere saath chal, yahan sab ke sar pe saleeb hai. Tuje Dekh kar mehu sochata Tu Habiba hai ya raqeeb hai
@maheshsaujani I really appreciate your comments. However, I do think it as my moral responsibility to correct if there is any mistake. "Saleeb" does NOT mean as you defined. Yes,it is "CROSS" made of wood and was used to "crucify" Jesus Christ. In Poetry, esp. in Urdu Poetry, it is used in mutiple meanings, usually, reflecting the "burden" bitter realities of life,. It has been used in so vast and with so many shadows of meaing. Here it means, burden of thoughts, worries, (Continued)
@ (Cont) Everyone is absorbed in himself or herself/ has burden to carry with, a burden of thoughts/suffering of his or her own life/reality. And that is why none is avaliable for the other to share and care and be a companion for /on the path of life. So this actually reflects the 'loneliness" of everyone, alone, and absorbed and egocentric too. Non-availability is due to the fact of "sufferings" that we all go through and have no time for others because of our own "loneliness". (my opinion)
@st471438 Salib means The Cross, the symbol of Christianity. as the poet was a muslim guy, rana sahri, he says, to whom i can take with me? who can lead me? every one here has cross on his head..means there are many people around, but useless for me. no one can fullfill my requirement, as he says there are many people in the city, but i dont have any friend or enemy...otherwise it does not have anything to do with religion....
baba aapko shat shat naman.....though there's no reality dost bhi hain aur raqeeb bhi.....par baat mein dum hai....koi dost nahin aur koi raqeeb nahin...sab main hun......aur haan shaadi ke baad .....after 9 years of marriage it makes perfect sense....
i dont give a damn to dose ppl who completely forgot the simplicity n authenticity of ghajal in the shades of hard rock or heavy metallic music...i mean y d hell we dont support something which is really soothing n adorable ..if this is a heavy meatallic or western pop or rock song thn there were around 31,00,000 visits and for dis there r only 31,776...get a life people rather than trying to prove urself advance n kool...:X
I do agree with you in all aspects what you just mentioned. But , at the same time, as young generation does not understand the real essence of poetry, they feel left out and feel bore. So what we need is to explain them and make them feel waht beautiful asset we have in our literature. Regards:
i like this ghazal when i am alone in london nobody understand here words like emotions, felings in this country nobody is ready to walk with you than ghazals of jagjit singh works like soothing medicine it fits here( mein KISE KAHUN MERE SAATH CHAL YAHAN SAB KE SAR PAH SALIB HAI
@1saraswat : London is a big city; a very lonely city too. Too many people just walking by or passing by but too little to share oneself.
