  • I had to dislike.

    They're just fucking vultures...

  • It makes me genuinely sad that our society has come to this.

  • The first time my sport crazy dad watched me watching this was just now when Brooker said "Bollocks to sport and bollocks to anyone who likes it".

Needless to say my dad shan't be a fan of this show in the foreseeable future.

  • Holy crap. What a great article.

  • Thumbs up if you'd like news reports with hand crafted dioramas again!

  • can anyone give me any proof to show that the mcaans actually ENJOYED being stalked by the press??

  • 4 people are Sky News directives.

  • I feel so sorry of the Mcanns. Couldn't the press give them a second of privacy?

  • @QueenBonesofdarkness they didn't want the privacy, they love the whole media attention....

  • @Rmg12 if they loved the attention why would they hide in their house?

  • @QueenBonesofdarkness its called acting up

  • @QueenBonesofdarkness Please, they were lapping it up.

  • what's the song in the background?

  • Bollocks to sport, and bollocks to everyone who likes it [Piss on football]. LOL!

  • Rolling news are news about nothing. Like they report something just happened in Libya thing but where does this new piece of information get us. How does it help us understand better what is happening, why is it happening, what is background and where whole thing is going. News are actually not about big picture. Also what is this obsession about news being fresh, I dont really give a fuck if i hear something that is not directly important to me now or in morning newspaper.

  • "...and some of them have satellite-link-ups..."

  • Lol biggest media circlejerk

  • LOOK

  • i never watch sport and i NEVER watch news but i will happily watch CB ranting about both :D

  • 4 Media students were not impressed!

  • "How many ways are there to say I don't FUCKING know." lol :D

  • hahaha love it

always feel like charlie doesnt fit in when he takes part in panel shows

purely 'cause he's so undiluted compared to most comedians

  • bollocks to sport and bollocks to people who enjoy it!

  • Charlie Brooker is brilliant as a comedian and satirist, and this piece shows why. He's not afraid to not play purely for laughs, and actually show some sensitivity on a piece

  • This is insane. This makes the media here in America seem like See It Now w/ Edward R. Murrow.

  • I'm glad this guy is doing what he does; sober, funny and sickeningly accurate.

  • "and some of them got satellite linkups" lol:):)

  • why does this show always play good music? its surreal. music is johann johannson IBM 1401

  • i missed the entire mcann story - dunno what it was about. clearly i don't watch the news. wonder why.

  • @ohdoshutit thats quite sad that you dont watch any news..

  • @stormer55 lol really? It's sad because someone doesn't watch news? What kind of bizarre world do you live in where the definition of sad is someone not watching news?

  • quite brilliant

  • there's a worring almost voyeuristic problem in modern rolling news reporting

  • hahaha HAHAHA

  • I hate rolling news. I hate it because the BBC in particular thinks you should just have 4 items of news and repeat them ad nauseam for 24 hours. Even when there's a breaking story they can't be bothered to get any new info so instead repeat the same video, the same reports over and over. It's really amateurish and lazy. If they don't know something they should just say so; endless speculation and tedious interviews with "experts" are not a suitable replacement for real news-gathering.

  • @sulijoo your right but its strangely hypnotic, watching the same items repeated every 10mins, it must drive the journos barmey, with there fixed smiles and forced banter give me shift down the mines anyday. :O

  • Charlie Brooker is a genius. His humour is so cynical and sarcastic and so true, god i love it.

  • "The row behind them was left empty so they could be afforded a LITTLE privacy and behind them is our correspondent."

A little privacy!? You shouldn't have even been on that plane you pooheads. Their daughter was kidnapped and they were accused of somehow kidnapping their own child and all the twits in the newsrooms did were stalk them like terrorhawks nd go "Ew look at them and watch them as they wallow in their own misery!"

  • bollocks to sport!

  • @iamthegun I think he'd love to turn it off if it wasn't his job, which looks like hard bloody work if you ask me...

  • this guy's got an eagle eye!

  • "And some have got satellite link-ups." The guy's a genius.

  • It's funny coz it's true! Brooker rocks.

  • That hellicopter shit cracked me up. Is that real?

  • Charlie Brooker just says what so many of the rest of us are thinking. That's why he's so brilliant. And it speaks volumes as to why most of the rest of the media are just shit.

  • Couldn't agree more, he is the voice of reason in all this news. Can't wait for the new series of newswipe.

  • @JoeStunner i agree 100% with u.

  • Charlie is brilliant, he's absolutley right about everything he reviews

  • 2:19

He's obviously not focusing on the suspect. <_<

  • I never subscribe to jack shit but this guy is good enough to make me want to hit that subscribe button and so i will - great stuff boss!

  • on the money

  • whats the tune in the background???

  • It's "Part 1:IBM processing unit 1401" by Johann Johannsson

  • News should be exactly that:

    North.

    East.

    West.

    South.

Now whenever some big story comes out even the BBC will devote at least 48 hours to the story, without divulging very muchinformation at all. Last week, aliens could have stolen the moon, and we'd still have endless drivel about Michael Jackson's death.

  • "and some of them have satellite link-ups"

  • rolling news coverage is like letting magpies run amok with a fucking roll of baking foil.

  • Totally nail on the head

  • Charlie Brooker is a god.

Forget Clarkson, he's just insane. Charlie Brooker needs to be on BBC2 every saturday taking the shit out of everything on TV. He's just . . . right.

  • I agree...Charlie Brooker is an unopened parcel of genius...Needs more airtime...his tv quiz show on Channel 4 is awesome too

  • whats the song/tune that begins at 3.17 ??

  • does anyone know the name of the music that plays from the beginning?

  • it is a mashed up version of Pachelbel's Canon in D.

  • "and some of them have satellite uplinks"

Sadly a precise description of the situation. Terrible example of the media milking a sad situation.

  • Briliant piece on the MaCann medid fiasco.

Charlie Brooker really showed his serious side during this review.

The media are so predatory they care more about the story then the actual people,

But then again as the saying goes.

"The media likes to think that the most important aspect of the story is that their there"

  • I try to catch Screenwipe whenever I can, Brooker just nails it every bloody time. The last edition I watched he did a spot exploring the idea that the news media is being replaced by biased, PR companies who slant the news in one favourable direction, and it really made me think. Given how the BBC is covering the Binyam Mohammed "torture" case right now without even bothering to cover the charges he faces, and without even challenging him on his story, I'm starting to think he was right.

  • 5:58 is the kind of shit I expected to only ever see on Brass Eye

  • Charlie Brooker was a writer on Brass Eye, y'know...

  • Brooker rules! Gotta love his rants!

  • I am a professional reporter and must say this is a perfect portrayl of everything that's wrong with news today. It's very sad.

  • @jer5876

May it be possible that there is some correlation between private news corporations and sensationalism.

(thus threating it like a product and pitching the right markets)

(not dry politics, not dry economics but sensationalist murder tragedies and such)

At least that's what I assumed when I watched screenwipe & newswipe.

btw, I'm not from the UK but it's pretty much the same here.(Belgium)

Public television is still pretty qualitative in contrary to private television.

  • @jer5876 Its funny how Charlie Brooker is generally, and always, correct about the issues he discusses haha.

  • @jer5876 As a professional reporter would you accurately be able to say that you can't report anything YOU deem important and you are told from the top what to report?

  • Madness, the spectacle is insane, or are we the spectators the ones in need of clinical observation?

  • Brilliant piece on the McCann media fiasco. Thank God for Brooker.

  • He does make a point with it. The whole McCann media coverage just shows what happens when news reporters are reduced to clutching at straws for a big news story, when there really isn't one.

  • nice bit of johan johannsen in the background!

  • "mef gurtle speg speg LOL nnnrg:) :) ;)"

For me makes roughly the same amount of sense as most youtube comments.

"I think generic comments are great"

    "I agree"

    "shut up"

    "you shut up"

    "I'm an American"

    "shut up"

  • Bollocks to sport and bollocks to everyone who likes it.

    Agreed

  • aww gawd he's kinda funny - he needs to team up with Chris Morris NOW.

  • Been there done that. See Nathan Barley

  • actually he's always being deadly serious it's just that he's very funny but yeah!

  • What I find in this video is that for once Charlie Brroker isnt being comical, hes being deadly serious for once which is something that I deeply appreciate

  • Charlie Brooker = win

  • epic win m8

  • This is too true.

  • I agree about the needless media attention on the McCanns, but they should have seen it coming. They deliberately wanted the story to be in the news ALL the time. The tactics that they used were obviously going to make the media follow their every move. They may have complained, but it's what they wanted. They wasted so much media time and thats the thing I can't forgive them for.

  • I think its disgusting how sky, Itv and the BBC treated the McCann's like a Circus

  • i think its disgusting how much media attetion this got and how the parents werent blamed for leaving dam kid in the first place, shes not first kid to go missing yet the media went mad for this story

  • I believe you meant to say, I think it is disgusting how sky, ITV and the BBC created a media circus around the McCann's tragic loss.

Sorry to be a pedant but 'treated the McCain's like a circus' doesn't make sense and contains an incorrect use of an apostrophe (marking possessives). I do agree with the intended sense of your statement, however I believe the McCains courted media attention then unwittingly became the puppets in this grotesque charade.

  • Is you Stephen Fry?

  • I did apologise for it being a pedantic remark (though someone decided it was worth dissapproving anyway). Again, I see what you are trying to do however deliberately obtuse gramma in reply does not infer your first error was deliberate.

  • What an incredibly arsey comment.

  • Thanks ZdPhoenix (if that is your real name). And can I just say that your comment back to my comment was brilliant. It sums up the views of millions, is 100% accurate and highly appropriate. I for one one will be looking forward to your next post and wetting my pants in anticipation. So well done you. Why not take the rest of the day off - (you deserve it tiger)

  • Oh, superb. I'm glad you're so enamoured with your own grandiose and self-satisfied waffle; I suppose if you're going to be a pompous arse, you might as well enjoy it. Congratulations.

  • Hmmm... To be honest I was a bit dissappointed with your put down there ZdPhoenix me old china. It's a bit flat, it doesn't really work for me. You could have gone for the jugular and made me feel inferior or insulted my religion, cast aspersions over my sexuality - but no you're still straining at the old pompous arse angle. Come on ZdPhoenix give it another shot I'm waiting to be offended lay it on me....

  • Wow, get you and your pretentious ironic cliches, 'me old china', 'gone for the jugular' look how incredably cultured and intelligent you are, at least ZdPhoenix was pretty funny in his insult. You just came across as a wanker.

  • That was slightly better tuscanyiscol although I'm pretty sure pretentious and ironic are conflicting terms, a better choice of word would be 'affected' and the insult should be 'not funny' no? It's definitely getting there but the main thread is pretty weak, it needs the 'wanker' at the end to inject that feeling of moral outrage. I haven't actually insulted anyone yet but I will make an exception on your behalf, just for you tuscanyiscol here goes; Your momma is so fat her blood type is Ragu!

  • haha, mate, you made my day :P comical stuff!

  • Of all the god awful spelling and grammar on YouTube, you choose to nitpick that? Madness.

  • ok, ok, it's gone far enough now why don't we all agree to agree with me?

  • who else thinks the background music is kinda creepy :S

    lool

    x

  • i do i guess

  • OMG Save me from the Kally Anthony story. Every day. bleh

  • Whenever I watch any rolling news station I just keep thinking of The Day Today and end up laughing my tits off. Which is unfortunate when they're usually reporting on child rape and whatnot.

  • The rolling news focus on the McCanns had a bizarre effect that Brooker doesn't mention. I remember the McCanns' plane landing as being some kind of Significant Event, simply because there was so much mention of it. How odd that by simply over-representing stories like this, the news managed to manufacture its own significance IN MY HEAD, so I remember thinking "oooh, they've landed, what next" as if it really fricking mattered.

  • the thing is every word of that is too true. it has become ridiculous.

  • God I hate scrolling news.

  • You know what really pisses me off about this?

Sky News is STILL reporting on it. Every 15 seconds there seems to be a mention of McCann on that scrolling text banner. No kidding, you can play a game by timing how long it takes for Sky to mention McCann from when you first turn the channel on. I bet you'll never get over a minute.

Sky News is so god awfully bad. But the other rolling news stations aren't much better.

  • Goddamn he hit the nail on the head didnt he?

  • So, the 7 Ws are:

    What

    Where

    When

    Why

    Who

    How

    WOAH

Hang on, I need to write this down.

  • I don't think I've seen a bad bit of brooker...

  • God he's so right about sport showing on NEWS!

  • genius

  • This is possibly the best piece of Screenwipe.

The comments about the media coverage of the sad McCann case is spot on.

  • and some have satalite link ups. lol

  • lol tv news pricks

  • lol tv news pricks

  • What is the music when he is interviewing the former reporter?

  • He's right in pointing out the complete over the top coverage of the mccanns, it was so utterly boring and irritating, sky news are the worst, why do we need to see them getting on and off a plane?

  • You know, I'm very glad to see this because it means that our buddies across the pond have had at least a little taste of what we Americans have to put up with every time a white woman here so much as goes to the bathroom without telling everyone where she's going. Don't get me wrong, missing children warrant all the attention we can give, but in the states, our media has burnt us out so bad on this kind of coverage that we can't even tell what's important anymore.

  • Interesting, I noticed that in the background there is a synth version of "Prince Igor" playing...

  • Was wondering what the song was. It was so effective in the strangely moving Madeleine McCann section. The inanity and hypocrisy of the news reporting was so shocking. Can you give me any more information about the song so I can find it? Thanks

  • I guess you could wikipedia it- I gather the track is from an opera, though infuriatingly my media player won't give me the name of the composer, so I can't be sure.

I've never heard this synth rendition before though; it's kinda awesome ; D

  • Right. The synth version of Prince Igor occurs during the interview. I don't know what the music is in the other sectionz.

  • Sick journalists feeding off other people's tragedies... we don't need this shit! But unfortunately, there are mindless idiots who like to watch it.

  • Makes you realise how sickening it all is. Yes, it's horrible Maddie went missing but we don't need this constant surveillance. I hate the press. They bang on about the poor McCanns requiring privacy, the media treating them badly and poor them, etc. while at the same time filming their every move.Hypocritical bastards.

  • "This wasn't news. This was just looking at stuff"

    Everyone needs to see this.

  • Absolutely true! The state of news reporting today is a joke!

  • In the time the news is wasting on stalking the McCanns, coming up with rumours and just following them EVERY where they go, they would have found her by now!

  • Mr Brooker can be very powerful.

Only this week a London hospital caught fire. Not a big building. My fave talk station LBC switched into BREAKING NEWS mode and filled 3 hours (in my background ears) with idiotic questions like, "Can you see any ambulances?" And what if they could?

    It's all so repugnant.

  • this was all over the top anyway one grl goes missing and the fukin worlds all over them

you dont se a two day news story on someone that gets killed in iraq

  • Sensationalist, superficial and pointless - that is the nature of news programmes today. As Mr. Brooker so eloquently said, the MCann saga wasn't news. I've begun to realise a lot of other reports you see aren't news either. Newspapers have little new content these days, too - its all vacant editorialising.

  • The Mccann story provided a nice safe distraction from the slaughter in Iraq.

  • Damn right Charlie! Keep it going

  • This is why I hate Sky News; a constant stream of sod-nothing. You can tune in during your breakfast to watch a report, and continue watching that exact report right through to lunch and dinner. It's fucking useless. Charlie Brooker deserves a clap for perfectly articulating that. Chris Morris' Brass Eye is another excellent parody about how the news channels sensationalize everything. Check it out.

  • i know, they just repeat the same thing every hour or so.

  • also "the day today" (which i think chris morris was in as well) is a very good news parody.

  • The Day Today was Chris Morris' creation.

  • Charlie was a writer for the infamous Brass Eye special.

  • Ahh, figures.

  • Wow. When he's funny, he makes you piss your pants. But, when he's being serious, he makes you really think. Damn, and I just liked Charlie Brooker for being a gamer. Tip of the iceberg.

  • Fab! Could you put up the whole episode? PLEASE!

  • Go to xthemusic's channel he the man

  • sorry I don't really have time. I've just copied my favourite bits at the moment.

  • xthemusic has most of the eps up so if you search around a bit you should find the ep

  • oops sorry didn't notice seanankerr already replied about xthemusic - sorry!

  • Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe is quite possibly the best thing on TV today which is pretty ironic in itself.

  • this standing around and hounding people happens alot in the USA...

  • this is amazing but i don't think the tags or the description do it justice and might mean that it remains undiscovered.

  • agreed. description deserves a rewrite. excellent, mr brooker.

  • This segment of Screenwipe illustrated just how harsh the media were to the MCanns and i think is one of the most upsetting and disturbing things i have seen on TV this year. Well done Mr Brooker for illuminating how the media hounded these poor people.

  • Anyone notice how odd the ITN reporters are? When one is talking the other one stares at them and nods repeatedly for no reason. They love themselves too. That female 'journalist' on ITN wears purple eye shadow, slicks her hair back and wears purple leather jackets as if she were a futuristic SS style officer.

  • Seconded -- great stuff!

  • Magnificent. Thanks to whoever put this up.
