OMG! Kathy Smith and I danced to this song back in 1960. High School graduation in 1965; It was OUR song back then. Married each other, had 4 great kids; divorced sadly after 37 years, but will ALWAYS have memories of the dances at St. mary's and Archbishop Walsh HS in Olean, NY. Thanks for the throat lump and tears....
What a fantastic posting. I danced to this song in high school(southern New Jersey). To see an imprmptu version of such a great song during rehearsal is a treat rarely seen or experienced. Thank you!!!!
Why didn't I live in the fifties and sixties? I'm 'only' 18, but I would do almost everything just to live then, it seems to be so much better than these crazy times.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. These guys still sound as good as they did in 1965 when I first heard this song at my first high school dance where I was trying not to step on my partner's foot.
This is a special record, distinguished among many from that era. Had all of the great group vocal harmony quality, but also a great lyric. Imagery (lying in bed, staring at the ceiling etc.) really draws you in. A jewel.
I had no idea who The Safari's were until I watched the Doo Wop Love Songs Concert and I fell in love with this song. This song means so much to me now, it reminds me of the woman who I love. This group is incredible and I'm sorry I missed out on them and this song all this time! god Bless you guys always! MUSIC like this doesnt exist anymore.
This happened because of TJ who produced the Doo Wop shows on PBS was desperately looking for this group for his upcoming PBS show. Someone called his Sirius radio show saying his brother was friends with one of the members of the group. From there, the reunion was started.
Wow! This brings back memories!! My mother was EXTREMELY good friends with Marv... I remember him so well and think of him often. Once he learned that I had started singing, he actually wrote me a song. :^) I hope he's doing well.
The first time I saw this video, I must have watched it at least five times. AWESOME! Another great video is of the Four Lads singing Istanbul and Standing On The Corner. They performed that live on a PBS fund-raiser. It was incredible!
Thanks for the info, guys. Is that Lou Costello second from the left. He's a DJ from WVLT.com. I love his show. These guys sound so fantastic here. I really wish that I could have been in that room then.
I don´t know much about this group or its members, but I love the song. However, I really wonder if these are the original Safaris. Frankly, they look a little young to be them. Also, the second guy from the left looks a lot like that Costello fellow from WVLT radio. Either way, these guys sound AWESOME! I could listen to this song over and over again!
@samsmutt The two guys on the right are the surviving originals (the other 2 originals are deceased.)
The one singing the lead is, in fact, Jimmy Stephens, the original lead singer. You can find his channel on YouTube at JimmySafaris. There you will find videos of him performing at a venue in Rancho Cucamonga with my group The Royals singing background. 3 of us from that group now perform with Jimmy as The Safaris.
Great video. I still perform with Bobby Rey, who played the woodblock in the original recording and, I believe, was instrumental during the recording. I think he helped in the actual recording.
Totally AWESOME! You guys sing this beautiful song just like you did originally. What a treat to see you doing an informal performance of this great song!
Been a big fan of Doo Wop since I can remember. Stumbled upon this and compared it to the original recording. The voices are amazing. Now I got this song stuck in my head. It's a great song and they still got it.
They still sound so great!! "Image of A Girl" is such a beautiful song!! So sad they quit recording in the sixties.........but, if you're going to be a "one hit wonder" this is a GREAT song to have been the hit!
One of my ALL time favorites. Lost my original - ELDO 'greeney' label in Pittsburgh. Bought replacement 2yrs ago (thanks to Ebay!) light blue label. Great sound. When the song first played on KQV, Pgh, I really felt lonely - had no girl-friend. Aaaaah. Thanks songhooked for this video. The guys still got it!

@songAre they from Southern California? They've got to be! And, the y look it! I was going to Centennial High School(that's in Compton)when they knocked that out..Rockwise, so much came out of Southern California..
This is absolutely wonderful, though it's a little depressing to realize that 2010 is the 50th anniversary of the song's original release. Good grief ! A true classic, undimmed by the passage of Time.
Spectacular! One of my all-time favorite songs. Jimmy Stephens still sounds great. Actually thought he sounded much better on "My Image of a Girl Is You" than on original. Both incredible! Thanks for posting this!
I'm speechless. They had to posses talent in the late 50's. There were no digital enhancing devices for vocalists. They made the music with their voices, and with their harmonies. These guys still sound great. Thank you for uploading this Gem.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this post!! I played the original version of this song on the radio in 1960..seeing this really gave me the chills!!!
AMAZING still sounds HOT. I was a kid (born in 1960) but still have the 67' Mustang my parents bought new. My father passed away 7 weeks ago and I drive it MORE now and songs like this bring me back to the "golden era" and make me forget life. Thanks guys for making REAL music and giving us ALL memories to live by:) My best...Roy, Jr
Wow. How cool is that? Sounding great guys! Now, were you all 5 years old when the record was popular or what?? (LOL) Say, how about the B side of Image....what was the name of that and can you do it here? We used to do it when we were a garage band in the early 60's and I just cant remember the title. Please?
Hi I was a member of the Safaris back up vocals for a Hollywood Bowl Performance in the early 60s. It's good to hear the original lead singer. Hi Marv!
Watching these guys rehearse is like watching Ted Williams take batting practice. He was flawless, even when there was no game on the line. There are people in life who absolutely excel at what they do. This is an example.

By the way, who are "The Phantom's Band?" Are they still out there, somewhere on the West Coast?
Wonderful! One of my all time favorite songs! I think one of you is my cousin, Jimmy Stephens. Your Mom married my Uncle Hubert. My Dad was his brother Ben. Wow, that was a looong time ago!
I was 8 years old the first time i heard this great tune. I loved it then... and now i am 58 and i still say it's my all time fav oldie! Love it, love you guys! Thank you!
This is one of my favorite group harmony records. Has all the requisite vocal chops, but seems a little more writerly and sophisticated. A marvelous achievement.
Marv Rosenberg wrote it. He was a founding member of the Safaris ( they were called The Enchanters, then The Dories, and then The Angels). . Marv did indeed write this song while lying alone in his girfriends bed after she told him it was either her or his music. There was a loud ticking of her clock and water dripping in the bathroom--and the rest is history. By the way, the girlfriend moved with her mother right after the song hit the charts but she did offer to sell him her bed.
From what I"ve read, the song was written on a bed with a ticking clock in the background. The guy had just had a fight with his girlfriend at the time.
Nothing better than great Doo Wop....and these guys are just warming up. Thank God that there are people like Jimmy Stephens and Marc Rosenberg keeping this great sound alive. Great Doo Wop like this is timeless. This tune sounds as good today as it did 48+ years ago! Long Live Doo Wop, and long live the Safaris!
I just looove this song! I grew up hearing oldies from my parents. Jimmy Stephens voice is awesome!!!!! He still sounds good and the video is practically acapella! OMG! Unreal!
OMG! Kathy Smith and I danced to this song back in 1960. High School graduation in 1965; It was OUR song back then.

Great lyrics and I've always loved how they included the ticking of the clock. Who thought of adding the clock sound way back then???

From what I"ve read, the song was written on a bed with a ticking clock in the background. The guy had just had a fight with his girlfriend at the time.

It looks so effortless for Stephens, that I thought he was lip-syncing. Incredible! They still sound amazing together.
