When I was 16 in Aruba I had a divebag full of dead bleeding fish and such , just a spear in my hand when a 12/14' great white swam 10' under me real slow. He or she kinda looked up at me , we met eyes , and she just kept going real slow as I was popping out a turtle head. As soon as it was out of sight I swam faster than the best swimmer in the world. I never went in the sea again. Ftw !

@AnarchyRacingTV sharks nearly always attacks surfers, kite surfers, body boarders because these guys are out at the back breakers in deeper water. This FLA guy was 500 yards from shore. If you're an ordinary swimmer in 4 or 5 feet of water you likely won't get attacked because the bigger man-eaters wont venture into the shallows.

Am I the only one who feels safer swimming around a bunch of people to minimize the odds of ME getting bitten? It would be considered reckless to enter a lion-infested jungle without protection of some sort. Somehow the ocean is different, and I guess in a way it is - it's like entering a lion-infested jungle in the dark.
@1001001mike I think that the primary risk is when humans look like fish, seals, etc. via surfboards, boogie boards, etc. As far as I'm aware, most sharks attack humans by accident, mistaking us for food. They just want to "taste" but in doing so wind up killing the victim. I suppose that being in a group might offer protection since large groups look less like a meal than isolated swimmers and boarders. Not much is known for certain about shark psychology/behavior during attacks, though

I look out there and think "There's sharks out there swimming around those people and they don't know it." I know the sharks just swim all around the people and don't bite. Am I the only one who feels safer swimming around a bunch of people to minimize the odds of ME getting bitten? It would be considered reckless to enter a lion-infested jungle without protection of some sort. Somehow the ocean is different, and I guess in a way it is - it's like entering a lion-infested jungle in the dark.

@1001001mike I think that the primary risk is when humans look like fish, seals, etc. via surfboards, boogie boards, etc. As far as I'm aware, most sharks attack humans by accident, mistaking us for food. They just want to "taste" but in doing so wind up killing the victim. I suppose that being in a group might offer protection since large groups look less like a meal than isolated swimmers and boarders. Not much is known for certain about shark psychology/behavior during attacks, though

@ritter89 I know - you're absolutely right. Small hammerheads are all over Florida where my parents live. I look out there and think "There's sharks out there swimming around those people and they don't know it." I know the sharks just swim all around the people and don't bite. It's the fear of what they could do if they make a mistake. Google "Matawan Creek NJ" to read the precursor to JAWS. I know the odds are slim, but damn, if it happened?

Surfing is the same as running a foot-race in the lion enclosure at the zoo. There are risks. Only you can also drown while surfing.
