  • I can't believe Alan played the MC and Eli Gold. It just shows how versatile he is.

  • i love his singing, but he's just...he's just...too gay. Its too much the dancing and faces he makes...not trying to disrespect anyone btw.

  • really?is..he? omg XDD

  • I love his laugh at 2:02

  • Oh holy mother of god. He is honestly the sexiest man alive.

  • haven't seen this in time! XD

  • I like this performance, but it's just so... not 30's

  • Alan Cumming's Emcee is so much like this...naughty little elfin creature. It's smexy.

  • He is adorable <3

  • I hate Alan Cumming's version. I hate it hate it hate it. I heard so much about it that I assumed that it must be great. I hate it so much. He's ridiculously smug, not likeable at all. I'm expecting a lot of "thumb's down" for this, but I don't even care. I hate it.

  • @djsrob That's kind of the idea. The Emcee as a character is meant to be creepy and artificial.

  • @janusandjachy Yes, I know. But there's supposed to be at least a SMALL amount of appeal. He's not funny, and he just isn't sexy at ALL.

  • This was when I fell in love with Alan Cumming. So sexy!Love him.

  • I still remember seeing this in '98, the night before this performance at the Tony's. Cumming was spectacular.

  • Alan Cummings <3 you are amazing.

  • That was just about as sleazy as the clubs in Berlin were.

  • @blaisineful that's kind of the point

  • Comment removed

  • Lewd and maybe disrespectful to the original. Plus, I find myself asking if he's gay, instead of enjoying the performance...Okay, I just googled that he accepted being gay the year of this video, which is fine, but, gain, a deviation from the original. The original host was not acting gay!

  • NGH ALAN!!!!!!!!! you have stolen my heart!!!! and my ovaries...

  • His take on the emcee is so different from Joel Gray's that it's hard for me to remember that they are ostensibly playing the same part XD I like both, for different reasons!

  • crass and poor German pronunciation

  • @secallen but you've go to give him credit for trying

  • @secallen maybe that's the point

  • @agenttheater5 Hmmm he speaks German and French like a Brit but then English with a cod German accent. Was that intentional? Doubt it.

  • @secallen people come for the show, not for a language lesson. besides, what i meant was that maybe its supposed to sound fake.

  • @agenttheater5 hardly a language lesson. If you are playing a German MC, you have to research the accent and do it right, same as you would for any characteristic of your character. What possible reason would there be for speaking German with an English accent and English with a quasi-German one?

  • Well, Joel Grey will always be MY "Master of Ceremonies". He was my first;and for years-my only.

But, Alan is amazing in the role. Turn around, and he's 'Eli Gold'. He can do anything. I'm crazy about him. I'll watch anything he's in.

  • You should see Alan Cumming in Julie Taymor's film of Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus if you like his performance in this!

  • I have a friend who would be absolutely perfect for this role. I can't wait til he's old enough to act professionally. Watch out, Broadway in the year 2016.

  • To the lady who recommended this to me on omegle. Thank you xD

  • I cannot see Michael C Hall in this role.

  • @PhantomPhoenix1 I wish I could see Michael C Hall in this role.

  • This is NOT Cabaret.

  • i <3 alan cumming.. loved him as kurt wagner/nightcrawler

  • god he is so sexy :D i love him!!!

  • I like when he just laughs out of no where XD "Ahaha" 2:02

  • I miss Bob Fosse....

  • Saw him appearing in Loser (2000), and I knew I recognized him. In the credits there was "Cabaret" listed, and I recognized that has the song they were singing. From there I went to wikipedia. There they had a list of productions. In the 98 production they had casts listings. I thought it would be hopeless to find it, but then the words, "was highly sexualized, wearing suspenders". From there I found Alan Cumming's name, and from there I realized where I recognized him from. He was Fegan Floop.

  • the orginal is better

  • This is actually horrible. No offense to anyone who enjoys Alan Cumming in this role but I just hate it. It's not Cumming himself; he's a very very very talented performer, so I'm not judging him by this, it's just the take on the number in general. I feel it is not supposed to be sexy, but flamboyant and ridiculous, over-the-top, good ol' fashioned fun. And when the Emcee says "Tonight we may lose ze battle", we are NOT supposed to believe him.

  • @lifehouse57 They clearly sexualized the play. But in its defense, I don't quite believe it was sexualized just for audience's pleasure, it was aiming for an emphasis on escapism in desires. Yes, I prefer the over-the-top fun of the original Tony performance that's really determined to salvage fun in wartime.

But if you do want to see fine interpretation, watch warehouse production "Cabaret. Part 1" found somewhere on Youtube. Cummings pulls off something tragic at the end.

  • @AliaSparrow I understand your point but I still would disagree. I feel that it was just sexualized to try to stand out from the wildly popular original, which portrayed a cabaret how it actually would have been in 1930's Germany. And I feel that all Cummings does in this interpretation is make the audience feel uncomfortable. Again, nothing against him.

I will check that out, thank you.

  • @lifehouse57 That's all right, we all have our perspective on different productions, that's the beauty of theatre. If you find the time to sit through the whole 11 part warehouse performance and see what occurs at the ending. I warn you you'll find a very different interpretation. Cummings' Emcee aims for a predatory characterization that you want desperately to escape from, and the Cabaret is a very shoddy club with amateurs (including Sally) . Just type in "Cabaret. Part 1"

  • @AliaSparrow I did watch part 1 and it was much better than the Tony performance because the song wasn't chopped up. And I will definitely watch the rest of it, thanks.

  • @AliaSparrow this was de sexualised for the tonys

  • Alan Cumming is too sexy.

  • Pale and Pasty, sinister and sexy. he fits the role.

  • the best MC's Joel Grey and Alan Cumming

  • The man should be The Joker.

  • @epsteinsmutha1 yes he should

  • @AdamEfimoff I'm glad someone agrees. Just looking at Alan here, he's got the perfect combination of sinister and sexy. He looks like a hybrid of Conrad Veidt's roles in The Man Who Laughs and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

  • Joel Grey was better.

  • alan cumming <3 he is making love to the air and what I wouldn't give to be the air ;D

  • ......Peter Florrick isn't gunna be too happy about this.

  • I maybe a girl but I so want this part, I could imagine someone who like probably as this role (heeelllooo handsome!) lol

  • @TheamazingWakkorotti i mean who i like :P

  • FLOOOOOP!!!!!!!

  • allan cuming is the greatest for this role...perfectly creepy & shady but weirdly likeable.

  • alan cuming is the shiznit, I louv when he raises his arms and swings his wrists, so fairy-like, yet he makes it look so cool

  • 2:18

    'hello' lol

  • how fun :D

  • Alan is absolutely brilliant!

He's back in London at the end of the month for the first time since his solo show, performing at Lance Horne's album launch.

    Cant wait!

    (Tickets are onsale at nimaxtheatres,com)

  • @likealullaby7 I'm buying a ticket for the one in New York! :D

  • OMG!! Have this on repeat. Freakin love Alan. He is so perfect in this. I have always that this show and song in particular is intended more for the performance and quality/personality of the singer rather than a great singing voice. He has a great voice, but it is great because of the quality he brings to it not so much about vocal technique.

  • Why do people look at an actor performing a character and assume, because he did it so naturally, that he must be the same in real life?? Come now, use your imagination.

Joel Grey is a hard act to follow and Mr Cumming has made his own version. Excellent work.

  • this is my favorite adaptation

  • isn't Alan Cumming bisexual?

  • hahaha. yeah, i wonder why most straights guys don't like musicals.

  • @jeffpasch I'm straight and I love musicals!

  • Comment removed

  • (we want him for our own) Yes we do.

  • He's actually cute lol

  • love 1:24 RRRRWAUUUGH

  • We couldn't stop laughing in music because when he stripped and one of the boy's went O_O XD

  • God Alan is so effing hot. <3

  • every time i hear this song, it of course remind me of the evening i saw it! And i keep laugh every time! And, I like this song!

  • Orgasim

  • FLOOOP!!!!!!!

  • Alan Cumming has been spending too much of his time voicing animated characters! Love that face and body, and the way he moves. A blazing talent!

  • My 65-year-old aunt is hopelessly, desperately in love with Alan Cumming. I always figured the attraction was based on his personality, because I never really thought of him as being physically hot - until I saw this. Wow! He should dress like this (and wear this kind of makeup) all the time.

  • @fidelio1980 Exactly. He should also live with me.

  • wtf the first thing that comes to mind is Beauty And The Beast "be our guest" hahahahah i dont know why XP

  • @missmixgirlwithlove Oh my god, I thought the same thing! My fiance thought I was crazy when I told him that!

  • The 23 people that disliked this genius feel like its winter outside, and have problems that even the Cabaret can't solve!

  • my favriote version of the song

  • i respect him

  • sexy and weird at the same time WOW!!!!!!!!

  • @JudiTheWitch:

    JazzX15 is (almost) correct.

Altogether he says "I am your host. And (I) say 'welcome...'"

  • does somebody have any video of Alan singing "Money" from cabaret??? I really want to see it !!

  • urgh i saw all the performance they're like saking butt which making me puke

  • I love this performance! Does anyone know what Alan Cumming says at 0:57 just after he sings, " I am your host"? I haven't been able to catch it.

  • @JudiTheWitch he says "und sage" it´s german it means " and say you"

  • @JudiTheWitch He says "Und sagen", but I don't know what it means.

  • @Squishystones it means and say.........

  • @judemw What's with all the dots? It's not like I'm expected to know what something in another language means. Thanks for telling me though. :)

  • @Squishystones "Und sagen" is "And saying". So, translated the lyrics go "I am your host and saying willommen, beinvenue, welcome!"

  • alan cummings is a beast on stage!

  • alan cumming rocks this play. I never saw it so I found it online. Amazing!

  • Man this was my first broadway i ever saw and probably my favorite. That dude did such a great job.

  • Alan Cumming is so boss, I love Cabaret!

  • adore alan cumming! he's a brilliant singer/actor/secret fantasy... :D

  • he is from the l word !

  • pero esta coreografia no se hacia con sillas ? molaa ! (L)

  • alan cumming continues to make things creepy for me even though i love him......but still.

  • he doesn't top Joel Grey, but I applaud him for creating his own character instead of ripping of Grey's Emcee... it's a perfect modernization, and he definitely deserved the Tony for this role... Alan, we love you, don't ever change, and don't go away! :) <3

  • this is better than chicago!!!

  • @scorpioninpink That's also a MAJOR fav of mine, but in my opinion, Renee Zellweger kinda ruined it for me as I got older and dwelled more into the acting. All in all though, Cabaret and Chicago are my 2 favorite musicals to audition with. Bravo!!!!

  • Always makes me want to be up there on stage! So awesome.

  • does anyone have the entire alan cummings show of this... I would love it on DVD. please email me

  • My god. He has the most beautiful bone structure I've seen in a long time.

  • Though this is a great performance, theres no match for Mr Grey's Emcee

  • Oh dear god the homosexuality gods hate me

  • j'ai vue ce spectacle j'ai vraiment apprécié ! c'est pas commun

  • I agree with phil2u even though Im not of the joel grey generation, I saw his performance first.

  • I'm of the Joel Gray generation and he defined this role; Cumming is however SUPERB! How big are his feet?

  • c trop beau !!! vive le cabaret !!

  • Me encanta la Actuacion de Alan Cumming!!! I love the permormance by Alan Cumming!!!

  • I loved Joel Grey in this, but Alan Cummings does pretty good too. He pulls of the whole homosexual emcee thing great.

  • I love his laugh at 2:02

  • yh it's cheeky lol

  • @chicagorox1929 LOL me too :-))

  • Floop's Fooglies would be a good name for a strip club ;D

  • I just got this part in the school play... and I'm a girl :D

  • congrats nd well done

  • I could see a girl play the part......but it kinda eliminates the Emcees Homosexual part of the story-the Emcee was preatty mucg gay :P. But it could work out, congratz on getting the part

  • Yeah. We're in middle school so they were gunna cut out the homosexual part anyway. We're just doing a bunch of random songs from musicals, but I get to open the show up :D

    Thanks Guys

  • WTF? Cabaret in middle school? What will they have them doing in High School, Oh Calcutta?

  • haha. I know, it's just one song though. The rest of the songs we're doing are from stuff like Wicked.

  • No, in High School they do Rocky Horror.

  • @clownrus I wish!!

  • @xXNotOkayChrisXx : All the best -- it doesn't matter whether you're a boy or a girl, just be divine. :) BTW, the Emcee in the 1970 Vienna production was played a woman, so there really is nothing new under the sun!

  • @xXNotOkayChrisXx That is my DREAM!!!!!!!!!! I don't care if I have to grope a few chicks I WANT this part!!!!!!!

  • @xXNotOkayChrisXx we just did this this past weekend, and one of my best friends was also the emcee... and she is a girl too, she did awesome.

  • @xXNotOkayChrisXx what ???

  • He's amazing. It's like this role was written with him in mind.

  • He's the only suitable Emcee. I've seen three other Emcee's and they are all rediculous. So, Alan is boss.

  • omg that is so cool im speechless Alan Cumming is amazing! :)

  • my fave Emcee is john stamos...he's hot!

  • damn<3

  • Looked a superb production headed by an amazing Emcee in Alan Cumming

  • alan was without a doubt born for the stage and was destined to be an amazing entertainer/performer.

  • Alan Cumming is a genious!

  • that is just classic

  • That was so funny

The German accent is a bit too fake. The Host in the movie had this perfect German accent.

  • *sigh* me too. Do you remember him in the movie Circle of Friends? He played a character named Sean Walsh and was fantastic as usual.

  • I love Alan Cumming.

  • Love him in this!

  • i wish i could have seen this show! based on videos i've seen, nph is my favorite emcee, but that might just be because i worship him :) alan cumming is great, too, though!

  • I wish I could've seen him preforming the whole show ;-;

  • I saw this just this summer, (not on broadway) and loved every second of it! I was smiling through the whole opening number!! If you ever get a chance to see this musical, do!

  • he's my favorite emcee. :)

  • is cabaret performing off broadway now?

  • its like a natural disaster is my pants..

  • @isawhale HAHAHA oh my god I choked on my water when I read that!

  • Love the "hello!" at 2:19. I agree he's not as on point as the recorded performance, but he's still wonderful. And I fully approve of the outfit. Alan in less clothing is a GOOD thing.

  • i couldnt agree more :D

  • Not as lively an emcee as I expected from Alan. But I'm not criticizing!

  • Search for cabaret part one - he's much more impish in that clip

  • Is it just me or are his clothes slowly dissappearing? o-o

  • did he record on a revival cast album?

  • Yep, search TheSoulMan8

  • So I believe Alan Cumming is sexyy and he was night crawler from X-men. I love him as the emcee, this is amazing.

  • Liza Minnelli was a much better Sally Love Alan as the emcee!!!!

  • I prefer this interpretation of cabaret to the movie. The movie just loses a lot of the darkness and edge that cabaret is supposed to have. Alan is a brilliant Emcee.

  • Lovee Alan but Im not feeling this. Its off.

Oh well still love him tho, gorgeous as ever 11 years later.

  • lol too bad i was 6 when this aired

    alan is a badass

  • I was 6 as well.
