  • Fucking pictures, its a video site, and its time for people to realize that

  • mike sucks!! virgil rulez

  • they are all amazing.

  • Im not impressed with Virgil.... pretty boring

  • mike is good with his ensemble playing but he doesnt really but much musicality in his solos.

  • Peart blows the other two away in creativity and musicality.

He is the benchmark by what all other rock drummers are measured.

Not to mention the fact that he is a million times more successful than the other two.

  • Virgil Donati is an amazing drummer but Orion7633 should have picked a better solo of his for this video.

  • Carl Palmer, eats 'em all up,and spits them out,and his single 'kick',and 'peddle',as in ''Tanks,Solo'',circa1970,proves,he was faster with one foot, then theses guys with two!!!...He and the ''Late Great John Bonham'',were the alltime ''Greatest Rock & Roll Drummers'',ever...period.

  • @BigBrother08007 In your dreams bro. Carl Palmer???!!! Cmon. Even back then Bruford would eat him for breakfast. Not to mention narada michael walden when he played with mahavishnu orchestra and Peart and Phillips could probably kick him to the curb as well.

  • @chillichomper: your trippin',you either don't know anything about the ''Tech &Artistic Side of Drumming'',or your doin' too much 'cid...or both...

  • I'm a keyboard player, so i wouldn't really be qualified to say who is the best, i like all 3 but my favourite is Virgil.

  • The professor!

  • Neil Peart is the best. he doesn't need speed to impress you.

  • @moedog0099 Exactly, Neil could play Virgils drum solo, but he doesn't because he actually wants to sound good.

  • @moedog0099 I love neil but his solos are quite boring. What he is/was is the father of precise metrics in Rock n Roll. Terri lynn carrington, a woman, is a very very interesting player and soloist.

  • Yea, have to agree with JazzRockFusion.... Donati eats the other two whichever way you judge them... Donati is "The whole package". Thanks for the posting.

  • Yep Virgil just blows the greatest away and always has ......im gay so i might try fuck him for his DNA .

  • Id go with neil peart. You can tell that its an actual composition, hes thought about what hes writing, theres narration, its coherent, its musical, its got a shape and feel.

The other 2 - smash, bang, dugga dugga dugga, look at how many things I can hit, look at these parradiddles, now look at my double bass, now look at mw smashing everything at once.

  • i'd like to see this interview where portnoy says he has a lack of technique..no way dude. portnoy is jammed with technique. he's nasty, as much as i think DT is a frustrating joke, portnoy wins for chop nastiness across the board. but each drummer is unique so..not a fair game really lol

  • U Cant compare neil peart with 2 metal drummers

  • my 3 favourite drummers

  • speaking as a guitarist and player of various other instruments, Neil Peart is in a different league. Amazingly creative, and has an uncanny ability to add tune to a song. The others simply don't do that. Have also seen him and Buddy Rich, and he matched Buddy Rich technically on snare/ fundamentals. If I could choose a drummer for my band, it would be Neil Peart without a shadow of a rainbow trout.

  • should have used one of pearts earlier solos, he really was alot faster and always had the creativeness which made his solos very entertaining to listen to, especially in the early and mid 80s. you know, when neil peart was neil pert.....

  • 1. Mike Portnoy...!!!

  • I have to give the nod to Neil Peart on these purely based on the way he makes it so you are drawn to the rhythm. He makes the others seem like noise. Are the other solo's and drummers no good...oh no..I am not saying that at all...they are tearing up with their chops! But the solo that catches my ear is Peart's.

  • Virgil is best at being Virgil, Neil is best at being Neil & Mike is best at being Mike. Get it?

  • Sorry but on these solos, I vote for Mike Portnoy...

Virgil Donati may have better technique but on this solo he misses/misplaces a lot of Bass notes specially on the beginning of the solo. And keeps repeating same patterns all over again. I've listened to better Donati Solos.

Portnoy executes his solo as a Machine. This is good and bad in some senses. Good because is good to hear but bad because has less "spirit" then the other 2.

As said before, It's not fair to compare them to Neil Peart.

  • Mike Portnoy

  • Neil Peart

  • VIRGIL DONATI!!!!!!

  • nope dave weckl will eat them up!!! :D even donati

  • Peart still is and has been since the 70's the greatest drummer of his time. The others wouldn't exist if it weren't for him raising the bar in the first place.

  • só monstro !

  • you guys are fucking dumb. Neil Clearly destroys.. Mike is close second. Listen to what Virgil plays, compared to Neil. Which seems easier to play? I can listen to what Virgil is playing and have an idea how to play it and what to hit. Listening to Neil is pretty hard to think what the fuck hes doing without watching a video haha..

  • @ColdBlooded97 If you're trying to convince me with this post that you're better than Virgil Donati (in any aspect of playing) BUT not as good as Neil Peart (in any aspect of playing) than I'd like for you to please do me the honor of taking your fucking foot and shoving in your fucking mouth.

  • Neil Peart is ridiculous; his drum play exceeds generations. Virgil is a close 2nd. Very close.

  • I used to think Meshuggah's drummer was unrivalled in metal music. But since I discovered Planet X and Virgil - I'm not sure in anything anymore. Only that I'm gonna buy the next Planet X album the minute I see it.

  • virg!

  • They're all great but no one on earth comes anywhere close to Virgil Donati,he is an Alien of Drums coming from a different Galaxy, what he is doing is pushing the human possibilities to the very end of the road...and his tempo is as accurate as a drum machine..not human !

  • comparing all these drummers, regardless of all being somewhat in the same styles of drumming, is still like comparing a cheese burgder to a chicken sandwhich. doesnt work. their different drummers and are respected for what they do in different ways. and all three could shit on anything you people could play

  • Donati.

  • Mike portnoy blew them away

  • Portnoy is definitely the best all around drummer. He's got the talent to play just about any style of music.

  • @MrMhere4...All are great at what they do......But Portnoy could never play swing/jazz, latin, bebop, country........Sorry.........especially the swing/jazz stuff.......MP doesnt have the right feel or finesse...............and if any of the three could it would be Virgil.....he has the best/most incredible hands out of the three......................what your hands can do is much more important then what your feet can do.

  • NOTHING AND NO ONE CAN BEING COMPARED TO VIRGIL DONATI

  • Portnoy = The best POSER!

Peart = A great drummer who innoved so much a long time ago.

Donati = Technically maybe the bigger hard beatin drummer in the world!

  • @Alhajred So Portnoy is a poser for being a good musician? Or just because ur jealous of all his skill and ur being a little bitch about it. Also, Im pretty sure innoved is not a word and Peart is still amazing to this day, not just a long time ago

  • Virgil, all the way.

  • I love Virgil's foot technique, a mad scientist - with the hair to back it up.

  • Why is mike prortnoy so famous he's not even that good. He's better than the average 45 year old drummer who's had 30 years to develop a style

  • No offense, but Virgil Donati eats the others for breakfast, technically speaking. Neil Peart is from another generation; like the godfather of technical rock drumming- he set standards in the 70s and 80s which have subsequently been met and exceeded many times over. Mike Portnoy has a lot of heart and personality in his playing but is very limited technically (and has admitted this in interviews). Virgil Donati is the whole package- unrivaled chops, great feel and imagination. No contest.

  • @JazzzRockFuzion YOUR ARE TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY

    RIGHT

  • @JazzzRockFuzion Virgil's more technical, but just listen to The Dance Of Eternity, 6:00 or Constant Motion by DT. Not only can Mike play complex stuff, but he's extremely creative and has created memorable drum parts.

  • Comment removed

  • @Fredophobic

On the contrary, Marco Minnemann is far more technical than Portboy.

Check out "Insanity" featuring Marco on YouTube.

  • @Easleytee I never said anything about Marco, I'm just saying Mike Portnoy is a terrific drummer, and while not as technical as Virgil, Mike Mangini, or Marco, is still technical and most importantly very very creative.

  • @JazzzRockFuzion na! in my opinion neil peart is more creative whit his solos you should listen "De Slagwerker" solo (im not saiying that neil its better than virgil,)besides neil peart its an icon he and portnoy pratically revolutionized music

  • @JazzzRockFuzion Virgil= ritmo sem sentido; coisa sem graça assim como o Mike.Só ficam nos pedais e esquecem o resto.Neil=MESTRE, DEUS DA BATERIA.Sem mais.

  • PORTNOYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!\M/\M/\M/

but there r much better solos of portnoy than this.. n who says portnoy plays only technical.. Whole feel of dream theater is POrtnoy...!!!

  • Virgil playing skills are undeniable, his ostinato technique is pretty good but is solo lacks diversity. Neil Peart is more entertaining but he's solo needs more show-off elements. Finally Portnoy's ostinato technique is one of the best, he is entertaining, his solo is very diverse and he's the one I prefer.

  • mike portnoy, no doubt

  • mike portnoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • probabily virgil is doing paradiddles with foots

  • Nothing compares to Neil Peart.Virgil Donati doesnt amuse me and Mike is... well Mike

  • virgil is the best out of the three... hands down

  • @marshallcj1 more like thumbs down

  • I have Virgil Donati sticks

  • they are all good in their own right.....the question is who's style do you like the most? virgil is the best technically, Peart is your rythmical genious and mike, well he is just Mike.....

  • gotta say virgil is awesome, but his solo here iis kinda boring. while Neil's solo is very entertaining (he's a god to me). Portnoy is an amazing metal drummer, definately one of the best today, but he's still a metal drummer (ye progressive i know) while peart is more jazz-rock. (also neil influenced him very much). My favorite is peart and i was most infuenced by his style, though id like to hear more of virgil. (IMO)

  • Neil Peart rules

  • you have 2 noise makers and one actually DRUMMER!!!ViRgIL DonATI=)

  • virgil <3

  • hmm iv never heard of the first drummer in the vid, but he was pretty good. i know of neil pert, and i like Neal pert, and i respect his style, but his style is not my style. i drum a lot like portnoy, because my favorite drummer was the rev of avenged sevenfold which had portnoy characteristics, so when portnoy played with avenged. i took great interest. so il go with portnoy. that doesn't mean portnoy is better than the other 2, i just relate to his style and performance the most!

  • Sorry, but Portnoy shouldn't be ranked among these two. Virgil has his style, but Peart is in his own level as much as Buddy Rich and John Bonham are on their own levels. To me, those three can't be touched with what they had brought to the table.

  • First, portnoy should not even be there, according to Neil Peart does not reach the feet of Virgil, and third,

Buddy Rich to me is the best of all time!

    ass: Ronaldo directly from Brazil.

  • @ronaldoadrianoparra

Peart, Rich, and Bonham are to me equally the greatest. Its hard to pick which one is better because of their contrasting styles. For me anyways

  • Comment removed

  • I suppose it comes down to what floats your boat. If amazing technical prowess is your thing, then there's no argument, Virgil has (along with say, Mangini, Minneman, Lang to name a few) technical ability like no other on the planet. But whether his style of solo/playing is your thing is preferential. But that's not to say that Peart or Portnoy doesn't have great technique, because they do. Just not as advanced as Donati's.

    That's my opinion anyway.

  • Virgil is a BEAST!!! Love Neil's soloing because he tells a story. Mike Portnoy is a clone of Neil, don't get me wrong great drummer but everything he's done as been done before. But its Virgil for me he takes things to the extreme and does it with a great heavy feel.

  • I would like to NOT HEAR THE SAME FUCKING SOLO from Neil Peart once in a while... then I'd be able to say that has some cool chops/ideas/impro skill and not that he composed a solo so he'd never have to get out of it....

  • @thekitchenfreak I've been to multiple Rush concerts.. he's plays a different solo every time....

  • @moterhead7 You mean that there are times where he diverges from the 3 part (drum intro - turn around to electronic kit - back to the drums for big band stuff) formula ?????? I'd like to see that honestly!

  • They're all excellent drummers, but Neil is the most experient, and influenced a whole generation of drummers

If you don't believe, watch "Rush-Beyond the Lighted Stage" and you'll see that Portnoy is a Neil fan!

  • Portnoy is the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DONATI 2000000000000000000 YEARS AHEAD PORTNOY AND 400000000000000000000000000000000000 AHEAD NEIL PEART IN A INTERVIEW PORTNOY SAID VIRGIL IS BETTER THAN ME .EVEN A PREFERING PORTNOY DONATI IS MUCH BETTER

  • IMO, of these three Mike is the best:

    Showman

Improvisational performer (within a band setting)

    Arranger (within a band setting)

But, I have to admit that in solo situations I much prefer Neil Peart. From this selection, his solo was so much more entertaining to me. Though I'm a big fan, I would probably find myself attending a clinic by N. Peart; S. Phillips; S. Smith; M. Minnemann before one of Portnoy's. Though, they're all very close, and I would probably see him too if I could!

  • @JAldwin wrong, clearly u dont know anything about drumming

  • @ahrims221 ...Thus the "IMO" at the beginning of my post.

It's just that every Donati solo I've heard sounds exactly like the one he did here.

Peart himself has stated he's better at prior arrangement than improvising performances.

I've seen Portnoy live multiple times and own three DVD's of his, including the two-disc Liquid Drum Theater. So, again, IMO I've still got to go with Portnoy from among these three.

However, I wouldn't consider any of these solos their "Best".

  • well all i know is that mike portoy is at least AS good as neil peart or even better...but Neil was the inspiration for Mike to play the drums.

  • my personal favorite is Virgil Donati. For me he is so much ahead of any other drummer. What he has been doing with Planet X is unique, so groovy... I saw him in live and he is truly impressive.

  • maybe the answer is take them in a blender and get onliy one drummer and call him "nike pertnoy donnati"

  • sou mais o mike portnoy

  • I'm having headache if who among them captures my heart. They are all best but who's really is the best?

  • @orion7633

You can't say who's the best. They are probably best at their own things

  • @simasp93 Correct! the most important they are great now! Whatever influence they have they deserve to be in their own style!

  • @slamstein76 Yes. Almost every drummer has his own style

  • @orion7633 No one is the best.
