Ray has a beautiful voice and can play the hell out of a flute!! He is so multi-talented! I LOVE the Moody Blues!! The way they combine classical and rock is really special!!
The Moody Blues are unique. No one takes precedence over the other. When Ray sings, Justin and John back him up but step out of the light. The same goes with the others. Graeme voices "The Orb" in DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. Isn't it wonderful? Ray began with the Moody Blues singing a George and Ira Gershwin song from PORGY AND BESS. Truly they are ALL grand! ~ Janet
My friends and I saw the Moodies about a dozen times between 1986 and 2000 and never heard the boys do "Eternity Road". That's not to say that they never did it during that time. Ray only did a handful of songs during each show, which is a damn shame. We got to see him do "Veteran Cosmic Rocker" in the late 80s. It was awesome!
Wooow. Ive been a fan of the Moodies since I was a small child, and "To our childeren's children's children" is my favourite album (apart from "On the threshold of a dream) so to hear this is amazing, takes me back to the gigs :P
.......Ray ...Thanks For Your Fabulous Legend.....Missing You... Is Better Than Never ......Having Experienced Your Music.......Thanks....Ray My Dream... Ray Stay Forever.....
this isn't "rare" to me. This live version lacks compared to the recording. I think the music here is a little "clumsy" and pretentious too. Anyway, I'm a big fan.
I love these two orchestra-enhanced live versions, Steve! I haven’t heard these arrangements before. Maybe the San Diego concert will be released on CD?
I have VIDEO live of them playing Elternity Road from twoshows..one in Canada and the other I beleive Memphis 1994...how do you transfer VHS tape to you tube?
I saw the Moody Blues 3 times in 1994. Tampa, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Charleston, SC when they were touring and using orchestras from the cities on the tour. It was great. TAMPA was fantastic! Charlotte was GREAT ! Chaleston, sorry to say, but the orchestra tried to play louder than the band...as if THEY were the stars. THEY dimished the joy...not the Moody Blues.
Eternity Road, Legend of a Mind, Another Morning, Nice to be Here, And the Tide Rushes In, Sorry, Our Guessing Game... NO EQUAL. A completely unique way to compose and sing. I miss you, my friend. Regards from Spain.

omg, I LOVE Eternity Road!! Ray Thomas is such an under-rated writer/composer and many of my fave Moody Blues songs are by him. Thanks for posting. Wish I was there, but would have gone bananas had they launched into this number.
The Moody Blues happens to be one of those rare groups that sound as good, if not better when they are live on stage. One of my all time favorite bands for the last 40 years, and there have been a LOT of quality bands in 40 years to choose from!
@Tarkus101 WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO MEET RAY THOMAS IN 2004 WHILE I WAS IN PHOENIX, MET HIM AT OF ALL PLACES, AN IHOP AT 1 AM!!! SAT WITH HIM AND TALKED SONGWRITING, TOLD HIM I WAS A SNGER AND HARMONICA PLAYER, HE HELPED ME WITH SOME LYRICS I WAS WRITING, AND WE SAT AND TALKED MUSIC FOR 2 HOURS, IT WAS SO COOL, HE WAS SUCH A NICE GUY AND VERY SUPPORTIVE OF ME AND MY LOVE OF MUSIC
it's called a live performance.. it was the tour where the Moody's played with a city's orchestra during the whole show in each city they went to. and it's not faux operatic vocals.. that is Ray's folk quaver and it's beautiful. go listen to your over produced, faux vocal crap that is put out today and be happy..
i guess im not used to hearing them sound like this......having grown up with the old records....actually, his vocals, i will maintain, sound faux operetic...lol.....i mean, listen........and the backup singers and all, it just sounds rather overdone and cheesy.....and one of the things i love most about it, the contrapunctual (string) bass line is missing.....it's like john lodge doesn't play bass either anymore -- i mean, where's it at?
Didn't catch the most recent leg of their U.S. tour, but not long ago the three remaining "veterans" rocked songs not heard in several previous concerts (not even during the playlist-changing set shakeup of the the Red Rocks tour, with the addition of local symphony musicians). I also miss Ray performing--and never got to experience a live performance of Mike Pinder on his Mellotron, the "world's smallest symphony orchestra."
Sooooo fantastic! One of the all-time underrated Moody Blues songs. Ray's vocals are so strong and brilliant. This song was meant to be sung with a full orchestra....I miss Ray on tour...hope he's doing okay.
From one of the greatest albums of all time: To Our Children's Children's Children by the Moody Blues. A true MASTERPIECE, and I do not say that lightly. TOCCC will change your life.
For sure. Tons and tons of them. Even practically unknown songs that are way better than most everything that's played on the radio. This is a fabulous example.
People who only know a few Moody Blues hits and really like them should explore their music a lot more. I guarantee they'd be very pleased!
One of the best Moody Blues' songs, and a tribute to Ray Thomas, the great story-teller of the Moodies --- the album cut from To Our Childrens' Childrens' Children is still in my view tremendous - especially the end riffs which are so ahead of their time. Rock on...
yes a great lounge act !! I really meant that with ray and mike's songs, this band was really something else-- in the early 70's they were probably the best live show around ( as long as the mellotron was working)..
I love Justin's hot finger pickin on the song...just perfect..liquid flow !
Ray Thomas is awesome! Wish he was still with the Moody Blues. I bet he is having fun in his retirement. Great version of this song, Thanks for the post.
This fantastic piece made my day Thank you very much indeed! When the strings came at 1:00 with Graeme's cadence, I realized that it was really the Moody Blues and not a cover... Thrilled to find this song today. Please post other treasures if you can! Thanks again.
Wow, this is terrific! And to think it was recorded in my home town! It sounds absolutely wonderful! Gosh, I miss Ray. But if he's happy, then I can only wish him a lifetime of health and happiness. Thank you for posting this.
Sign me up to attend, too! Didn't Mr. Billy Joel begin his solo career as a "lounge act"? I'd say that's a great pedigree. Oh, yeah and those boys from Liverpool playing in a German basement lounge...it "bugs" me that I can't think of their band's name. Those who don't listen may never understand, even if they hear.
I saw them play this song at red rocks without the orchestra- very cool song and I really liked justin haywards 's liquid guitar solo which you cannot hear on this recording..
but ray really had some great songs and was a very strong vocalist- right next to justin in fact.
the band isn't the same at now..just a lounge act really.
One of my favs as well. I too saw the guys over the years and never heard Eternity Road. Thanks so much for the great post.

That was awesome. Ray was so talented. In 1970 I was a high school senior
and stayed in my room for hours listening to them. We lived in Alaska so didn't
get to see them in concert. Thanks for putting this up for us to all enjoy. Love
you tube music fans!! Especially MB's ones.
