Censorship is important to have to protect our libraries from unwanted content (ex. Pornography). From what I read it sounded more like this librarian wanted to refuse us of our rights to censor our public libraries, if the majority agrees. The librarian was never fired. The librarian and the other department heads were asked to reapply for their jobs. She kept her job and no books were or have been banned. Palin was merely asking questions to be informed on the matter of censorship because it was a big issue and people in Alaska wanted to ban some books in their librarian. There's an alleged list on Amazon of the books she wanted to go after...its ridiculous! There were the classics like Catcher in the Rye, Huck Finn, and recent stuff like Harry Potter. The one that is typically purported to be the list has books on it (e.g. a Harry Potter book) that wasn't even written at the time in question. None of this is meant to defend Palin. I suspect the list was floated as a Rovian tactic so people can discredit her critics. She DID ask the head librarian about banning books. That in itself says a lot.

Palin asked the librarian of the Wasilla Library how to go about banning books and the librarian told her that she would do nothing of the sort. Palin then fired the librarian. After a large outcry from the people of Wasilla she rehired the librarian. The librarian left in 1999 because she said Palin was to difficult to work with.

It isn't censorship. I am not sure what you are not understanding about this. This is like saying that YOUR excluding books from your PERSONAL library shelf constitutes censorship. A library is not a publishing house. A library is not an author. A library is not a newspaper. It is nothing more than shelfspace. And that shelfspace is PAID FOR through taxes levied upon them by their political leaders. As such, THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT to influence their leaders on what books will fill those shelves.

The librarian was never fired. The librarian and the other department heads were asked to reapply for their jobs. She kept her job and no books were or have been banned. Palin was merely asking questions to be informed on the matter of censorship because it was a big issue and people in Alaska wanted to ban some books in their librarian. If the majority of the public don't want something in their library then they have the right to choose what they have in their library.

I said before, the banking industry, despite CHANGES to the regulations, remains one of the most heavily regulated industries in the US.

The disasters government protected us from:
forest fires, Katrina, great depression, recessions, outsourcing, 911, social security bankruptcy, medicare bankruptcy, industrial decline, drug prices, doctor shortage, vaccine shortages, gas prices, gas shortages
And so many more.
Oh wait I made a mistake. I listed all the things that government either caused or made worse. And none of those were cause with any direct or ill intent. They were all unintended consequences of other policies.

Recessions= Republican congress and president in the 80's Regean. Now it is Bush and republican Congress with the exception of the last 2 years.
Outsourcing both parties caused that.
9/11 was an inside job Bush again.
Social security bankruptcy Bush again Republican!!

One more thing about the Forest fires let them happen if people are so dumb as to build their dumb ass house up in the mountains. That is there fault not the governments. Forest fires are a natural occurrence. So, I say let the rich assholes house burn down they are all greedy anyway. Look GOD belongs in church. There is nothing wrong with having FAITH. But using your faith to con people for your own personal gain is not showing your Christian Values. haostrom, I understand and share your outrage.
From the ABC Brian Ross investigation (easily found on youtube) we know that Palin's church at the time had a problem with the books, "Pastor I am Gay" and "Go Ask Alice". The author of "Pastor I am Gay", Pastor Howard Bess, has stated that Palin's church was trying to remove his book from the Wasilla bookstores and that Palin was involved in that in the same time period.
