"Don't worry about the door?" I don't care what year this was... That is the most ridiculous comment I have heard knowing your crew gained entry from that point.
no scbas no helmet evan on the cheif people heart or lost no accountabity ems laddy calling for a dog standing right next to the fire not helping any one just wow how can people be so clueless
I posted a few comments a while back. I would suggest some (or all) of you read the previous posts regarding this footage. A lot of your questions will be answered. I was the cameraman of this footage and I will be happy to answer your questions w/ one understanding....I will answer in the attempt to train firefighters, not bash them. Mistakes happen at every fire scene in America, learn from them!
Oh boy where to start??? Where in the hell was your RIT team, maybe your too small of an FD to have one, thats ok Secondly why wasnt the door blocked open??? Last why are there 4-6 so called firefighters standing around knowing a fellow FF is inside lost, pack up and get in there tug on the line go in for him dont just stand there and call for him like a dog. judgeing by the smoke there was immenent danger of flashover, so why didnt anyone go in????
As soon as I clicked on this and saw the open door I knew what was going to happen. I have had a few fires like this and you need to station someone at the door managing the hose and watching means of egress. If someone can't be put at the door then something needs to be placed at the door, whether it be a pike pole holding it open or and attic ladder thats opened holding the garage door opened. However; if you have a garage fire, you should obviously make entry through the front door
and push the fire out through the garage. I haven't seen enough of this to determine where the bulk of the fire is... I assume it is interior but not enough video to determine.
big mistakes on behalf of fire command and the exterior crew, the door she have been proped open and a 2nd team made ready incase something went wrong inside. this fire dept is lucky they didnt lose those guys
well for starters, typicaly we fight from the uninvolved side. Also we use the 2 in 2 out rule as well as a RIT team. I see no command structure or dicipline on this call you people are lucky you are not DEAD
What he said is "Don't worry about the dog" There was a dog in the garage that they were trying to coax out, you can hear it barking. They should have been concerned about the door and not the dog!
Two-in, Two-out -- However the two out don't have SCBA, nor are they monitoring the color of the smoke (flashover) or safety conditions, like the garage door closing an trapping the hoseteam. This video should be seen by every firefighter in the nation, because this is a fairly typical suburban job.
wow.... I really hope those guys who were standing on the outside and watched the door come down never got another chance in the fire service because after that they definitely don't deserve it
I stated in my original post that I will not divulge the names of people or the fire company involved as it would serve no purpose. I will tell you that it was in central NJ.
where the fuck is everyones airpacks? this has got to be one of the worst fire scene actions I have ever seen- the garage slowly comes down and no one does anything.......
1. I don't know the exact number of F/F as I was focused on shooting the tape, not watching when help arrived...initially, I saw 1 on the pump, 2 inside, the Chief, a couple of probies (bright yellow gear) & a few in the back yard.
2. RITs weren't around back then. There was talk about it but most depts didn't have them, esp. small vollie cos.
3. I heard the 1st disp. at my home 5 mi. away, immed. drove there & you see the tape from the beginning. Addtl. tape shows 1 injury & front & rear of house.
4. 1st F/F out- 3rd degree burns left hand & smoke. 2nd F/F 2nd deg, burns to ears from what I heard.
5. SP report stated wires melting caused door to drop. As a former Inv., it is apparent when Mutual Aid tomes are activated the door comes down.
I've read a lot of comments regarding this video. Some correct & many incorrect. I was the cameraman of this footage. If you have any questions...please ask away! I will NOT divulge the names of the people or FD involved as it would serve no point at all. This footage has been seen Nationwide since 1991. Please learn from it rather than criticize the actions taken or not taken. I look forward to your questions.
I agree w/you. It's old, no rit, they had manpower issues, ect.. I realize we all did things a bit different back then. Still, all that was needed to make things better was some roof vent. it would have changed the game.
beleieve it or not the garage door came down when the chief had dispatch drop the hook for a cover assignment the radio frequency set the automatic door to close i seen this at the academy
This video looks to be about 10-15 years old. RIT and the like didn't exist back in the day. Certainly not in a small FD with limited manpower. It's events like this that helped to create those safety things we take for granted today.
this most certainly a new jersey operation..the door is shutting and he's standing there with his thumb up his ass instead of maybe putting a pike pole in the door in the first place?
How about pulling the electric meter and the emergency release on the garage door rendering it a flimsy piece of metal. A flat head axe or hot saw would have made quick work of that door to get those guys out. RAPID INTERVENTION TEAMS SAVE LIVES!!!
Just a little tip for any other firefighters, whenever I go through a garage door a pair of vise grips get cranked onto the tracks. Make sure you mash the hell out of the track when you squeeze them on there, and while your at it, I saw a good suggestion below about kicking off that laser sensor across the bottom of newer openers..never thought of that one.
You are right. I am guessing this is an older video, because now we wear SCBA's anytime we are close to a fire. Also escape routes are vital, Guess they forgot their 10's & 18's.
Now that has been implimented into central dispatch's system when dispatched for ANY structure assignment. As far as an axe goes, there was apparently no time to get one once it happened. Yes they should have had it then and there. That's why this was made for a training video at my fire acadamy. Something to learn from and never do again.
Though this is an old clip, the RIT was actually being toned out...funny thing because those tones were the ones that triggered the door to come down. Yes they should have had one there at the scene on standby.
I read that the finding weas that an RF signal triggered the door opener. We had a fire where heat build-up melted/shorted the wiring going to the door pushbutton, activating the opener. In that case, the door opened & ventilated the fire, but it could just as easily go the other way. Newer systems have a photocell across the door opening. It's mounted on a thin metal bracket that can be bent with your foot; the door then won't go down.
One question I have is where was the RIT. The team should have been ready to move in as soon as the fire went bad. We have a strict policy that if there is ANY fire we have RIT ready to go as the first crews move in, even during a surround and drown. You never know...
The clip is several years old, before the RIT was a standard feature at fires. Although with several people standing around watching the door close, I don't know if a RIT would do much good.
The rest of the video showed his skin hanging off of his fingers from the heat. This was to show us wet-behind-the-ear probies that equipment is important and on for a reason. DON'T TAKE YOUR GLOVES OFF! The man who was injured was taken to the burn center, made a near full recovery.
In order to take it off, of course his gloves had to come off-bad idea. That's when the garage door went down and the heat soared in that garage melting his skin off. You can see it when he is being carried out. The door went down because if you listen, the tones that went out sent out a signal that triggered the door to close. They came to this conclusion after the investigation.
This video was actually taken in NJ. My fire instructor was at the scene of this fire when this whole nightmare occured. Our firefighter 1 class saw the entire video-yes there's more that cannot be shown on YouTube due to its graffic nature. The firefighter who got trapped was trying to take his watch off because the radiant heat began to burn his wrist via his watch.
my guess is they went in on the attack line and became disoriented. A chief told someone to get the pike poles at 1:44 so someone noticed the problem.
Here is my question why at 1:59 you hear someone say don't worry about the garage door AND a white helmet walks by as its shutting?
First of all, I have to agree with cfc35engine. You have NO IDEA what they were doing inside. Last time I checked, I couldn't see through smoke with my eyes. Second, if you pay attention, their philly bells are going off, which means they don't have much air left. Probably explains why his mask isn't on, or maybe he had a malfuncion in his regulator. YOU DON'T KNOW. Stay in the truck from now on. We don't need 2/20's like you on the scene.
What I wondered was why didn't they put up something to prevent the garage door from closing, and why did the one FF stand there and watch it close without taking any action.
That is a very good question. The only thing I can think of is that it looks like a pretty old film, maybe from the late 80's early 90's, and there wasn't much "progressive" thinking then like there is now. On scene operations weren't as safety oriented then either.
BTW, you guys can't say they didn't do a search, you have no idea what they are doing on the inside. They may or may not have. Don't Monday morning quarterback, just take this close call and learn from it.
