Frickin brilliant... Bill's dance is all awkwardness, he doesn't even know what he is doing or why, the lizard part of his brain has taken over. But Martin moves (and watches) like he is on a mission - "I can't stand the quiet!!!". The Venn diagram of all of the inter-relationships going on in this one scene probably looks like popcorn.

I wish Martin Donovan was my friend. I forgot how great he was in this one until I watched that "Can't stand the quiet!!" just now. He is the greatst. He might be psychotic and he might be homicidal, but I don't think he's angry.

@choppedlogic I count more than one, though I'm not exactly sure where everybody comes from. After I saw this movie I rented every film I could find any of these actors in, and felt like I'd discovered buried treasure. Incredible actors; Hartley must be a damn genius, making movies with these same people when he's getting acting of this caliber out of them.

I am a huge hal hartley fan and this is one of my favorite scenes. it is even better in the context of the movie, and martin donovan screeching up in the car is totally awesome on the big screen

I accidentally caught this dance scene on television and was impressed with it. Later, I bought the movie, Simple Men, and me and my house guests performed it during a party with the Sonic Youth Cd "Goo" playing the dance track, "Kool Thang" Riotous fun !!! And the movie is good too.
