a companion unobtrusive.......best sums up the music of Rush, it just flows at you and overwhelms you with the awesomeness of the sound, hard to believe it's only three guys playing!!!
Rush has always been amazing live, but my god, they were ON FIRE during this period. Particularly Neil. Wow.
Side note... no matter how many times I hear this song, it is one of the only songs in existence that can instantly bring a smile to my face no matter what.
This was the first concert I ever went to. It was a Day of Rock and Roll at the Houston Astrodome in early June 1984. Great memories of everything - high school, great friends and great music. Thanks for posting this.
@MNalbs But making music is certainly not for free. It takes a huge amount of time and effort from multiple people to prepare and film a show like this, not to mention the cost of setting up the show and filming it into a DVD.
Performers and their staffs are live human beings that have to feed themselves, find motivation and gain respect from their jobs. I see no better way than going to their shows and buying their CDs to give them what they deserve.
@MNalbs Besides, Rush wouldn't have kept performing for 40 consecutive years without three generations of fans buying their CDs, going to their shows and paying them homage. I think of it as a classic example of two-way communication between the listener(reader) and the performer(writer).
@hthorke1 shut the fuck up its the band members names in red letters and saying which instrument they played, Im not talking about any of the actual concert footage. whats over my head? That everyone on this video knows the names and instruments of the members of RUSH so a thirty second intro is a waste of time?
The video's not even seven minutes long but the credits are over a full minute and Rush didn't start playing until another minute had passed. How about having some concise credits during the last ten seconds of oompah-band music before the guitar kicks in? otherwise I'm having to skip around and figure out where the music starts and it's a pain in the ass.
@TheBimmyandJimmy -- I was there too-- omfg WHAT A KILLER FUCKING SHOW! When the intro video was going crazy and Lifeson came out doing the riff on this song, that was just about the coolest stage-entrance I've ever seen. Those guys are just unbelievable, as good as they've ever been if not better... and not just their playing ability but the videos, the light show, the pacing of the show... absolutely perfect if anything in music has ever been perfect.
@mythillogic It was an awesome show wasn't it? Wish I was closer (up in the stands of Alex's side) but still a great view. I saw theses guys up in the front in red jumpsuits like the moving pictures cover. 2112 was amazing, everybody was up cheering (especially when the Vancouver bear beat the crap out of the Boston Chicken). God, everything was great. The only problem was that I was really the only one around me rocking out while everyone else just stood or sat down, even during camera eye.
@MrRockmex Lots of sampling. They have a guy backstage on a computer who Rush has always referred to as their 4th member. I cant remember his name. Some stuff is also trigger via foot pedals by both Geddy and Alex.
@Esperant3 Uh, just so you know he did use some form of auto-tune on the HYF tour. Listen to a show of hands. He was having a lot of vocal problems at that time, and you can hear he sounds like a robot on that tour. He wasnt using it here though, so you're right, but he did use something later, I cant remember the name of the device, it wasnt called auto-tune at the time. A lot of people used it back then in the studio to smooth their ailing voices out.
Whoa! That windy sound at the outset reminds me of the film Blue Velvet where they ever so slowly focus in on that rotting, hairy, disembodied ear in the grass! "Yep. That's a human ear, alright."
I saw them in concert for this tour in May of 1985, Cow Palace, San Francisco. If I recall right, Michael and the Mechanics opened for them. I got tickets late, but I ended up about 8 seats back on stage left, where I could see Geddy and Neil doing their thing. Best concert I have seen to date. Tommy Emmanuel was close, but in a much different way.
Why in the world, does this video start with the theme music from the 'Three Stooges', before they even start the song for the video? Was that something odd, like having washing machines on the back of the stage?
You don't have to be a Rush fan to understand that these three guys are with no doubt some of the most prolific musicians of their time. Every time Stewart Copeland is asked who is the best drummer of all time, he never puts Neil Pert in his choices, when asked about that his answer he states that Neil is not human, Neil Pert cannot be human, he is flawless beyond human comprehension.
honestly, i love you for making that comment. People who like music but dislike rush or dont even give them a chance should vanish off this earth. I was one of those people for a while. Biggest regret now as a rush fan. Im seeing them this sunday at madison square garden im fuckin pumped
@Jidster01 They were/are truly amazing musicians, but the lyrics were sometimes truly awful. There was one song which contained the line: "Science, like nature, must also be tamed, with a view to it's preservation" It's supposed to be rock music, but often degenerated into philosophy lectures.
LOL..no dancing here !! Bleak. austere Canadian outlook. Grab your flannels and some dried beef - we're headed to where only grizzled old prospectors and heart- broken bachelors go - the icy North.

except for that little incident Alex had with cops a few years ago they are never in the news for activities unrelated to music and the lineup has not changed is over 30 years, they can go as long as they feel relevant
I remember this like it was yesterday! I was in 7th grade, and I had heard of Rush, but never seen them before, or really knew any of their songs. I saw this on MTV, back when they use to play concerts on Friday nights. After this, I not only became a life-long fan, but started taking drum lessons a few months later. Ever since Power Windows I haven't missed a tour, and still playing drums 23 years later.
@mtalley1 Never knew that MTV played concerts in the 80s. I missed that era by a little bit but was at least around the Beavis and Butthead and (mostly) music video era.
@ZakBrownrigg123 He's an old man now. He hasnt been a very good singer in a long time. Every note you can really hear is a real struggle for him. He was only like 31 here, it was a long time ago so you cant expect him to sound like this. This was 25 years ago.

Geddy Lee could play a song that was made up entirely of the sounds made when you miss a note in Guitar Hero, and it would still be the best thing ever.
It's a Steinberger L2 and it's all graphite composite not aluminum as someone else mentioned. The tuning is direct pull with the tuning heads as part of the bridge. It almost never goes out of tune and because of the graphite composite material it has incredible sustain.
@Annonymus121 I've never actually played one of the originals. I've heard some shows where it sounded pretty good and some where it didn't. My bass is a Spirit by Steinberger which is a wooden copy of the originals. Mine has plenty of bottom end but I can't speak to the old graphite bodies except for they have great sustain. Ged's jazz does sound good but I never felt comfortable with one. I played one for a while but I just didn't like it.
My name is octopussy pain and im so insecure and depressed about my life that the only reason I have not killed myself yet is that I make up an existence I dont have on youtube and hopefully someone else just might hate their life as much as I hate mine. no one will miss you man I promise, even your staff at waffle house, just kill yourself
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You losers really need to get a life, 'YEAH THIS BAND IS AWESOME I LIVE WITH MY MOM AND MY OPINION MATTERS!!!!!!". Do you have any idea how much more money I make than you? It's pretty sad. Let me know when your car insurance isn't registered in your Dad's name you virgins. It's soooo amazing knowing I'm smarter than all of you. GG son.
oh, i remember! lol, maybe it wasnt all that smart but still; i LOVED all their music but their most recent album has like one good song on it and it wasnt even that good. dont get me wrong, i LOVE this band. SOOO amazing. but the lyrics and everything..to me, it just sounds like they ran out of things to sing about. just didnt really apeal to me as their old stuff. i bet it would have been aweosme to be a teen in the 80's. prolly, the best time.
@gabrielle34291 It was and you are 100% right. Rush's best period was 78-89. Nothing can be topped by anyone for what Rush put out and did live during those 11 years. NOBODY WILL EVER COME CLOSE.
i♥♥♥rush! my dads fav. band ever. biggest fan. ive had this video under my favs for EVER. it the first vid to play. im not one to brag but i believe i have a very good taste in music. im 15 and listen mainly to classic rock like this. im learning how to play this song and many metallica and journey songs on guitar. ohh, journey. my first love. (: STEVE! whyd you leave the band?! (i know why, rhetorical question, haha) DAMN IT i was gonna say something smartical but now i forgot. :/

Geddy Lee could play a song that was made up entirely of the sounds made when you miss a note in Guitar Hero, and it would still be the best thing ever.
Y'know why?
Cause he's GEDDY.
FUCKING.
LEE.

Best band ever, short of maple syrup and hockey, the only things that canada ever produced that people like.

It's a Steinberger L2 and it's all graphite composite not aluminum as someone else mentioned. The tuning is direct pull with the tuning heads as part of the bridge. It almost never goes out of tune and because of the graphite composite material it has incredible sustain.

No low end though, its just not there like his jazz bass.
Annonymus121 1 year ago
@Annonymus121 I've never actually played one of the originals. I've heard some shows where it sounded pretty good and some where it didn't. My bass is a Spirit by Steinberger which is a wooden copy of the originals. Mine has plenty of bottom end but I can't speak to the old graphite bodies except for they have great sustain. Ged's jazz does sound good but I never felt comfortable with one. I played one for a while but I just didn't like it.

SOOO amazing. but the lyrics and everything..to me, it just sounds like they ran out of things to sing about. just didnt really apeal to me as their old stuff. i bet it would have been aweosme to be a teen in the 80's. prolly, the best time.
gabrielle34291 1 year ago
@gabrielle34291 It was and you are 100% right. Rush's best period was 78-89. Nothing can be topped by anyone for what Rush put out and did live during those 11 years. NOBODY WILL EVER COME CLOSE.
