  • So happy to hear some of joy division song played on bass, especially a Rickenbaker. Thanks !

  • DAT BASS :O

  • @olegsokolov this is a technique Peter Hook often uses known as "creativity"

  • Comment removed

  • Mega bass! One of my favourite videos on YouTube, watch it nearly everytime I come online. Get some more videos up!

  • nice!

  • good job man, haha ironic that yure using a better bass than peter hook did while playing with joy division

  • top job mate,great vid

  • Malfoy? O.o

  • i decided to not buy new bass until i will have money for a rick :(

  • AHHH I wish I could afford that! SO BEAUTIFUL T_T, Nice playing btw

  • @HurpADervish Thanks!

  • I hate that they discontinued this color, and the autumnglo.

  • @FriendlyShadow1 Yeah, the 'colours of the year' were awesome...so glad I managed to get one before they stopped...

  • 8 people are just pissed cause they cant afford that bass, i know i am, but im not one of the 8 xD

  • yep peter hook is awesome. do you know exactly what bass he used on unknown pleasures? i'm sure it wasn't that yamaha copy of a ricky he plays in the videos.

  • @The300x300

You've got it a bit mixed up. He used a Hondo II Ric copy for UP, before switching to a Yamaha BB1200 by Closer.

  • @rutleronn oh ok. didn't he also use one of those shergold basses at one point?

  • @The300x300 Yes, his 6-string bass is a Shergold.

  • @rutleronn And in my opinion there was a noticeable lack of power when he switched to the Yamaha, especially live...

  • Great work. Sounds fantastic on a Ricky. Hooky would be proud.

  • @nietzchebaby Ta very much...

  • My favourite Band... on My favourite Bass.... Thank you sir

  • @Jerd888 Your welcome...

  • take care ofthe open strings, sounds messed up

  • @olegsokolov Well, it's atonal, that's why it occasionally sounds messed up...Hook often combined open strings with notes that wouldn't ordinarily go together, at least in rock, so there's a certain disharmony. But yeah, my playing is also not perfect...

  • You play it better than Hooky LOL...mind you that isn't hard :)

Nicely done mate. Stunning bass....try some Chris Squire from early Yes...perfect for that bass and more challenging

  • @wesmatron Cheers, mate!

  • Youre a brit Scott Pilgrim

  • @OfivetwoekVeeDee nobody benefits from this reference

  • oh the terrible things i would do for a rickenbacker....

  • thumbs up if you clicked only because of the rickenbacker

  • @ragnaroksama Cheeky fucker...

  • where'd you get your rickenbacker from? i'm lookin for a blue one, thanks

  • @PandaFilmz Tokyo - so that's probably not much help to you ;-)

  • @okra552 yeah obviously not man

  • That's such a gorgeous rickenbacker, my god.

  • Do you only play with a pick, or do you use your fingers as well? I'm switching from guitar to bass - or trying to- and trying to decide which to do primarily.

  • @roundtablenerds I also started off as a guitarist, so I primarily play with a pick, but in the last few years I learnt to play with fingers too. It all depends on what music you want to play. If it's mainly rock, then go with the pick, but it's always useful to be able to play other styles too.

  • @okra552 rock can be played with your fingers too....

    look at steve harris...geddy lee...

  • @roundtablenerds As a bass player, I can tell you the decision to play with a pick or fingers totally depends on which sound you like better (pick sounds different from fingers etc) and which style is more comfortable for you. Theres no right or wrong way, dont listen to people who criticize pick players.

  • Not bad at all!

  • nice sound!!!

  • @IgniteTheProphecy

It was actually a Hondo copy of a Rickenbacker. But it sounded like the real thingy.

  • It super good man!

  • Nice job!!!! I'm sure Hook would be happy!

  • nice rieckenbacker

  • rickenbacker are truly the best guitar-and bass makers ever!

  • Your bass is absolutely gorgeous! I am also gunning for a 4003 bass....Was your "Blueburst" color discontinued?? I only see "Midnight Blue" :((

  • @DuaLeaD Yeah, "blueburst' is no more - it was 'colour of the year' for 2007 and so a limited edition. So, either look for a used one, or go for the 'Midnight Blue", which is also a pretty cool colour in my opinion...

  • @okra552 Yeah, I own a Rickenbacker 620 6-string guitar in "Midnight Blue" with the "cresting wave" body style. It's still a great color, but yours is so much prettier....I envy you ~_^ Thankyou for the info sir!

  • wow! thats pretty epic! how much did you pay for it? ive been in love with this bass since the first time i layed eyes on it!

  • @winterblast32 It was about $2,200 - and worth every penny!

  • @winterblast32 hell ya! thanks for the reassurance man! im gonna save all my money till i own my Rickenbacker! keep up the good work!

  • @IgniteTheProphecy You don't need the tabs - just watch closely!

  • It took me 41 takes of a song until I could play with out my thumb hanging over...someone commented that it looked like a worm sticking out of a hole and it's bothered me since and I pass that onto you because you are awesome.

  • @martyman5000 Yeah, I know - with the thumb firmly behind the neck you can play much better, but to have the bass slung low the worm must appear... so I guess I'm sacrificing precision and technicality for cool ;-)

  • 1:33 I love U!!

  • @EST139 Thanks, but if you saw my face you wouldn't say that ;-)

  • Love the tone, great video

  • transmission from joy division is a cool bass riff and great play friend

  • @004482rb it's a great bass riff (and fantastic song), but with just two notes it's a bit too minimalistic...

  • go hit a japanese 12 year old boy with it...And see what happens...

  • @yoznfroogurt huh?

  • @okra552 FLCL lol its a show. of epic proportions. A girl with a blue rickenbacker hits a kid with it and robots start coming out. He has his own and owns the shit out of em.

  • @yoznfroogurt Oh cool! I just checked it out - thanks for that. Living in Japan I suppose I should've known about it already...

  • Cool playing, video, and bass! One suggestion: the bass needs to hang well below your knees if you are shooting for true Peter Hook style. ;)

  • @w3bt3k very true, mate - have to get me a longer strap...

  • Peter Hook may have not been a virtuoso bass player, but his style is unlike any other. He is definitely one of my favorite bassists. Nicely done!

  • If I only had $2000. :(

  • @IgniteTheProphecy if you wanna give away your midnight blue i wouldn't mind having it :P

  • sick bass man :P

  • Im a fan of Rickenbackers. Im a fan of Joy Division. Im a fan of british accents. In short: flawless victory.

  • @goneshootin22 Cheers, mate!

  • Really enjoyed that.

  • Joy Divsion got me into bass:]

  • That bass my dream made of wood and iron. it sounds extremely extreme

  • Love will tear us apart might not be the most complicated bassline as you said in your video, but what a masterpiece!

  • @bbBassYo It shows that you need ultra fast, extremely hard bass and guitar lines to make fantastic music.

  • I need to buy a ricky bass.

  • I use some overdrive on my Rickenbacker. I come from the Lemmy angle y'know? :)

  • thats one shiny ass fretboard!

  • @sunnyjim98 Yep, all Rickenbackers have lacquered fretboards - might not be to everyone's taste, but I love 'em...

  • @okra552 I'm a great fan of Joy Division, like your bass :) Greatings from Portugal...

  • They do sound amazing!

  • Love it dude!

  • @ChrisCarter1983 Thanx!

  • Verry Good =) =) =) =) !!! <3<3<3<3<3

  • @joybass27 Ta very much...

  • @okra552 =D

  • Nice job,............ You oughta make a joy division bass tab tutorial for youtube. I love Peter hooks work.

  • @glyanez dude, they're really easy to figure out lol, just find the notes by ear

  • I once owned the Midnight Blue and a Fireglo 4003. I still don't feel that the 4003 ever captured that really great 'twang' sound the 4001 had, but you are right, they are perfect for Joy Division songs - well, Hooky did play a Fireglo 4001.

  • I WANT THIS BASS!! :S is so xpensive, is it? :(

  • Get your thumb behind that neck, man!

  • @liquid679 We're not playing jazz, here, mate ;-)

  • @okra552 The thumb behind the neck will give you the greatest reach and range of movement in your fingers. It's good practice

  • @liquid679 Yes, of course that makes technical sense, but in terms of style, authenticity and coolness, a Rickenbacker playing Joy Divison must be slung low - see how Peter Hook does it - where the thumb cannot, and does not need to be employed as you suggest.

  • I've heard that the Tokai ones are well-made and sound pretty good too...

  • All Ricks are pricey, but maybe you could find one of the Hondo II copies that were around in the 80's, or the more recent Tokai copies, but these are all fairly pricey too...

  • Definitely in love with this sound ...

  • OMG A BLUEBURST RICK PLAYING JD!!!

    *in love*

  • and now i buy a new bass for my band.

  • Good luck with getting one. I had to wait for a year just to get my rickenbacker 4003 jetglo. They're never in stock. High company music stores hardly have them in stock.

  • Oooooo... I love ricks so much... its my dream bass guitar. I'm saving money to get one, dont know what color though... but its definitely going to be a while

  • beautiful bass and beautiful sounds. how much did it cost you?

  • Thanks. It cost 226,000 Japanese Yen, which would be about $2,100...

  • Does anyone now if they are going to start make the Rickenbacker 4003 blue burst bass again?

  • As far as I know, the 'colour of the year' thing has been discontinued while they catch up on back orders, so you're limited to just black, midnight blue, natural and fireglo. Maybe they'll do limited runs again in the future, but don't expect it soon....

  • joy division

  • u know Peter Hook used hondo rick copy

  • WTF! What a waste of 5 seconds!

  • i read somewhere that peter hook used a rickenbacker copy in jds early days, rickys have always been a bit lacking in low end for me, theyre still great instruments though

  • dude, that sounds amazing great work

  • The songs you named were the only ones I know XD

  • Never mind I wasn't paying attention XD

a lot of things make me XD

  • hahaha that made me laugh :)

  • Love will never tear us apart! Great song! I ordered my Ricky 4003 in Jetglo and will have it next week. I'm so excited, and this video got me even more excited! Great playing

  • Nice. I like the blue, but may get a Greco copy, it's cheaper and sounds almost like the real thing.

    Keep them coming.

  • that sounds like a chorus of angels. i wish i had that bass

  • That is indeed a *beautiful* bass, and in great condition as well:I personally like the lighter Blueburst to the darker Midnight Blue. Great playing as well! - your pickstyle technique is great, as can be heard in the octaves, double-stops and "drone-string" playing... nicely done!

  • Thanks, mate!

  • sweet. love JD

  • Nice bass...brings back fine memories....nice work dude!

  • i you see a ricky bass buy it as they are getting harder to find

  • Nice sound!

  • Joy division is the best band ever

  • heey man this is cooooool!!!You are great musician

  • mate that sounds absolutly amazing, top class 5 stars

  • Is that a pick you're using?

Joy Division sounds great with a pick. Especially Love Will Tear Us Apart.

  • A pick? Of course! You can't do JD without one...

  • I agree.

  • and of course hes playing a Rick, everyone knows you play a rick with a pick :P

  • thank you soo much I love those bass lines! joy division rocks watch the movie Control if you haven't yet

  • Yeah, great film...love it

  • nice ric, in about one month i´ll get mine (FG).

yes, you´re right, those basslines sound great on the ric.

    nice playin, btw!

  • Thanks! The Fireglo is the second best colour - after Blueburst, of course! ;-) You made the right choice - each Rick is a work of art...

  • Yeah I got midnight blue which is close to Blueburst but without the color fade. I couldn't be happier but i do like bluebursts better.

  • Really? I like my Midnight Blue better than the 'burst styles...the color is just so deep, & hypnotizing.

Each to his own I guess.

  • Midnight Blue is certainly cool, but I just love being able to see the wood grain peeking through, plus the walnut wings on the headstock. All Ricks are great, through...

  • That's a good point, I almost chose a Mapleglo because of the headstock grains.

    Excellent playing by the way!

  • hi, when was your ric made? I have a rickenbacker 4003 JG made in 2004, but I can't remove that treble pick-up cover. on the ric site it says it's a handrest, but I won't be able to remove it somehow, that singe-coil pick up is attached with screws to the pickup-cover, could you help me with this? rics rule by the way, best basses in the world :D

  • perhaps it is the horseshoe pick-up,

so you cant remove this sing?

    just an idea.

  • My 4003 was made in 2007. Don't worry, you definitely can remove the pick-up cover, although it's a bit tricky. Google Joey's Bass Notes - he has the details (for some reason I can't paste the link here, sorry).

  • no, it's ok. I've read it, it's easy to do. thank you. First time I did it I removed the entire treble cover, and it made a few tiny scratches on my ric, but I've read it now and it all makes sense :-) thanks again!

  • i love rickenbaker

  • This was brilliant, some nice basslines and IMO the most sexiest of all the basses!

  • dude, i understand it's personal preference, but you gotta put some roundwounds on that ricky to make it really growl

  • They *are* roundwounds! A bit old, though. And I wasn't playing at full 'growl' because my crappy amp was sounding muddy. Check out my second JD video, it's more growly there....

  • mean bass, joy division are next level obviously

  • I have a black aria with gold hardware llaying somewhere upstairs , i love rickens , try some cliff burton stuff its a real challenge

  • you're a best

  • Peter Hook never played a Rickenbacker!

  • Right - he had a Hondo II copy.

  • Sorry for stating the obvious. I thought it was a Ric for a long time and ended buying a 77 4001. They do have a great sound.

  • And where is Transsmision? haha

nice bass sound and color, good player

  • Transmission - that's only two notes! ;-)

  • you're a best

  • thats a sick bass bro!

  • Very nice bass. so do you speak Japanese? Level with me.

  • Well, I get by on a basic level. My listening ability is better than my speaking...

  • Rickenbacker is sick.

    Joy Division is great.

    A+

  • ooh that rickenbacher sounds sexy

  • Blue burst huh... pretty nice.

  • Really LOVE IT.

    Good work , great bass

  • peter hook did not use a ricky it was a copy i think either hondo or shaftesbury

  • It was a Hondo II

  • Sweet job, man!

  • maaan 3 things i love in this video:

    1- your bass (its amazing!)

2- the medley ; very good stuff

    3- ur british accent xD

  • impressive! very well played. love the ric, thinkin about gettin one myself :D!

  • Rickens are out of price and even impossible to buy in countries like France :-(

Anyway, you are not always close to the lines; notably on "From safety to where", the original is more sparse and spacey.

    Thanx for your vid.

  • How much did you pay for your rickenbacker mate its looks beautiful and do you know witch rickenbacker peter hook had 4001 or 4002 i not sure thank you

  • I bought it in Tokyo for the equivalent of about $2,200....worth every cent (or yen!)

Peter Hook played a Hondo II, which was a cheap unauthorised 4001 copy...he never used a real one.

  • o please play love wil tear us apart
