Thanks so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. The machine is really pristine, not a speck of dirt, so I don't think it's gunky. In fact, I can hardly believe that anything on it is worn. I wonder, instead, if it's actually an adjustment issue. But I'm not very knowledgeable about this.

But i can tell you that it needs to be replaced if you intent to fix it. What also could be the trouble is that the tabulator gunks up if the machine isn't cleaned. It could be stuck half way up. that is doesn't go down to it's original position after you use it. Clean the machine detailed and maybe that makes some progress.
